Tolls on the roads from Orlando airport to Disney? Help!

I can't tell you what to do but I personally bought myself the sunpass transponder from sunpass.com I paid 25.00 for transporter, plus 10.00 for tolls, I can add money to account anytime I want and I don't have to worry about carrying coins. I put my personal Car as reg one and add rental once I have that info ( at airport) There is a cheaper option but not sure if that one can be used on rentals.
For me it was no brainer as i travel to WDW at least 2x/yr. plus port every other year.

Go down all the options on the rental contract and pro-actively decline the ones you don't want. Watch where you sign or put your initials because the position of the blanks or boxes can be confusing. There is probably an option for electronic toll paying for a daily fee plus the tolls themselves.

Do not sign extra slips of paper without reading them. Sometimes they contradict what you told the agent.

Exit 6 off Greene's Way (417) takes you to the "Epcot entrance" (536) which also reaches Magic Kingdom conveniently. Staying on 417 a little longer, Exit 3 has the third toll and requires exact change most of the time and takes you to Osceola Parkway.

On Budget's site they say after 2/19 the tolls will no longer accept cash. There is a spot to click for more info but of course that doesn't work. Regarding the rental car company charging a fee to put the toll on your credit card, what happens to those who drive their own car to Florida?????? I am confused by how this works?????

Okay, I found this on the Florida Turnpike website:

"Beginning February 19, 2011, all Turnpike tolls are collected electronically between the U.S. 1 (Exit 1) and County Line Road (Exit 47) interchanges in Miami-Dade County, and cash tolls are not accepted. Motorists will use either SunPass or TOLL‑BY‑PLATE, and everyone will enjoy the benefit of paying their toll without having to stop."

If I read this correctly then it does not apply to MCO to WDW....

You read it correctly.

Tolls depend on which way you decide to drive. If you take the Beach Line (528) from the north exit of the airport, there is a $1.00 and a $.75 toll (2 stops). It's been a while but the last time we took the south exit and took the 417 (the way the Magical Express goes). I believe it's more money, and more stops. As a NYS thruway driver it's hard to get used to stopping every couple miles and pay more money instead of just paying once for the entire trip.

I'm not aware of any toll road system anywhere that doesn't take some sort of currency and requires you to be a registered user of that public road. Though some may not give change....possibly on the 417, can't remember exactly.

Between the airport entrance and exit 6 on 417 there are two tolls @ 1.25 each. IMHO, it is a faster route and well worth the extra .75.

Electronic tolls (no cash at all) on Florida's Turnpike will be gradually extended north from the Miami area.

You can do the north route from MCO to WDW (528 to I-4) for 75 cents total toll each way. Leaving the north airport exit, go left at the first light. Little over a mile is next light and you take two lefts to get on 528 there.

As with the south route, watch for toll signs and take what looks like an exit ramp to pay the toll using cash. The main lanes are electronic toll only.

What is TOLL-BY-PLATE? I'm assuming they take a picture of your plate then use it to mail you a bill, but how do they enforce it? Seems like a lot of technology and postage and paper and collection fees and administration time (to work out occasional recognition errors), just to save on paying a guy minimum wage to take your change.

Toll by plate is exactly what you assume. How do they enforce it? Not to be a wise guy, but, zip through a toll and not pay and see how fast they will "get ya". The technology is simple, it is a camera, the collection fees are assessed and they will cancel your registration if you don't pay. The collection guy is paid well over minimum wage. They claim it will make the roadways faster and more efficient. If you have seen the lines at busy times of the day, it makes sense. But, overall, I think it is a huge waste of money and contributes to the already high unemployment rate we have here in FL.

I don't understand this....isn't zipping through the toll and not paying the whole point?

What if you aren't registered in FL? Isn't this only a threat to FL residents?

Well, I agree that the point is to make it faster, but I'm struggling with all the back-office work of billing for small amounts, paperwork, postage, working out mistakes, access to a nationwide database of registrations in other state, collections, etc. Exactly how much per hour are they saving by not paying the toll guy?

If you don't pay the toll and you go through without paying they will "get you", that is the point I was making. The comment refers to those who do not have a transponder or who do not have toll by plate. It refers to people who try to "beat the system". Make sense now?

If you are not a FL resident, they will contact the powers that be in your state. If you are a renter and have not opted for the toll pass and it is not automatic with the particular rental company, they will access your credit card and charge you the toll plus fees for not paying the toll.

As I said, had you read my entire post, I think it is a huge waste of money, not to mention adding to the already high unemployment rate in FL. You can struggle with all the mechanics of this if you wish, personally, I have a transponder, I pay my tolls and frankly don't give a hoot how they impliment the program, I just disagree with it.

I'm still confused which isn't hard to do lol

We're renting through budget, can we pay cash at tolls or do we have to have it charged to our rental reservation?

I don't want to get suckered into paying per day for the e-tolls, we'll only be going through the tolls on the way to wdw and back to the airport at the end of our vacation. We're renting for 10 days, that adds up!

No. How does a driver "have" toll by plate? Isn't the whole system designed to simply take a picture of your plate so it works for anyone? How do you beat the system, by driving through without paying? But everyone has to do that...they drive through without paying. What system did they beat? Plate pass takes a picture if they don't pay....right?

And then what?

Make a request that they do work for them to collect 2 bucks? What authority or leverage do they have to do this over someone who is not a resident?

Yes, i get that part, because you have a FL licence plate (most likely), but if you're not in a rental car and have a car from another state, how do they force you to pay this? Have they set up some agreement with other states to enforce this for them?

I'm simply asking how it works. I did read your entire post, and I'm not sure why you think I didn't, especially since I cut and pasted and commented on all parts of it.

I'm not sure why you're so aggresive here, since we seem to be on the same side of the issue, saying it seems to be a waste of money and hard to justify, let alone to enforce. I just thought that since you chimed in about it you might know how it works. I guess I was wrong. :confused3
