We have a "very" late flight out of MCO after our cruise. So we will be renting a car to drive from Port Canaveral to Disney Springs (for the day) then to the Airport (MCO)

Do the toll booths all along the route ALL accept cash?

How much are the tolls?

Thanks.

I am looking at the Visitor Toll Pass program they have at MCO. Since I will be only renting a car one way from the port I have contacted them to see if it will work.

Most major car rentals in Florida have the express passes built into their license plates now. Ask the company, but I just drive through the tolls and the rental company bills me later. They may charge a small processing fee, but it is worth the connivence for us. A local can tell you the exact toll amounts, but it's less than $10 total from the port to Disney World if I remember correctly.

Budget wanted me to pay 11 dollars per day for an express pass whether I drove through a toll or not. I said no thanks. I had a 10 rental and only drove through 5 tolls. No way was I paying 110 dollars for that. I will never rent from Budget again. Alamo and Hertz just charged me for the tolls I drove through. Budget also wanted me to bring a receipt proving that I filled up the car within 5 miles of the airport or they were going to charge me an extra 10 dollars. Never again.

Agree. The "convenience charge" is not always small.

I don't remember exactly what Avis charges, but I know it is exorbitant. Or it was, last I checked. I always take the transponder off and pay tolls in cash.

OP, I haven't sailed from Port Canaveral since 2017. At that time, all toll booths has cash lanes. It might have changed since then, but I looked into Florida tolls before our last trip this past March, and I believe what I read was that all toll booths on the B-line (528) still have cash lanes, specifically because so many tourists use it. Definitely the booths between MCO and I-4 allow cash. We didn't go the other way, so don't take my word for it alone, but I think you'll be okay.

Visitor Pass is also a good option. I can't see why it would matter if you drive a rental car both directions or not (or how anyone would even know) as long as you can both pick up and return the pass at MCO.

Good info. They eliminated toll takers during the pandemic in the San Francisco Bay area.. You can get a Fast Pass or they read your license plate and bill the registered owner of the car.

For what it's worth, Visitor Toll Pass was a huge hassle for me. It didn't get picked up at some locations, so I ended up getting billed by the rental company. And I don't think they ever credited me for returning the pass either. I called and emailed couple times before giving up.

Just buy a Uni or a Sun Pass Pro to use whenever you rent a car even on future vacations. They each work for toll roads in 19 states.

We bought the Uni transponder and between the discounted tolls and savings over utilizing the rental company option, the unit has paid for itself and then some. The only drawback is we had to setup an account with $20 which sat there until we start getting toll charges. I do monitor the account, adding $10 just before the $20 auto-load occurs.

If you are from a state that offers the E-Z Pass system, then that now works in all FL toll roads (everywhere you see a SunPass or E-Pass sign in Central Florida, you can use E-Z Pass).

I rent from Enterprise locally here in FL for work all the time and I just drive through toll roads. They eventually send me a charge for the tolls and also charge about $10/day (only charged on days where there was a toll charge) processing fee for the tolls. It's worth it and might be the easiest way to go. I think Avis has a similar program and you can call them and ask them. Good Luck.

To get to Disney Springs - you can take 528 to 417 and go that way (more tolls) or 528 to I-4 to Disney Springs which does have less toll.

I was mapping out our drive options to Port Canaveral. I knew I told you if the route had tolls or not. Discovered today it will also tell you the toll totals. I know there are a couple of toll booths. I always have several dallors in quarters so I have exact change. I don’t hit tolls going down but we will also be going to Disney Spring before headed home so I need to get some change.

The next questions are about Disney Springs to the airport
1) Route:
  • I4 to 528 to the airport
  • 417 to the airport
2) where to gas up by your preferred route?

Thanks again

My answer would depend on time of day/day of the week, but I'd probably default to SR-417. When you come onto airport property, there is a gas station on the right near the new terminal under construction, before you reach the fork to head for the A or B terminals. It's probably a few pennies more than the Wawa I'd recommend if you take I-4 to SR-528, but you won't have to go out of the way.

I agree with the previous poster, use the Shell station on the airport property. If you wander north of the airport on Semoran Blvd, do not use the Sun Gas or Suncoast Gas (both are across the street from each other - both are notorious for having prices that are dollars more than other stations.

We always use 417 to the airport. I fill the gas tank at one of the stations along World Center Drive just before getting on 417. There are two stations on the right side of the road, so easy access and exit from the stations. I have never had a problem with the level of gas in the tank when I dropped off the car not registering as ”full”. I usually rent with Alamo or National, and they have never asked me for a receipt showing where I filled the tank.
