Toll Roads - MCO to Disney

Oh wow one more thing I had not considered if we rent a car! (we don't have toll roads where I live).

So just have cash in small bills and coins, is that the thing to do?
Unless you want to get one of the transponders. The booths should be able to make change for any bill $20 or less.

Oh good; thank you!

I cannot imagine a need for a transponder... unless we love it so much we become regular visitors! :)

My memory is at least one toll location is automated, exact change only. Other locations might feature longer lines at the full service lane. I suggest bringing a roll if quarters.

Between MCO & Disney, the only exact coin only tolls are entrance/exit ramps. The main line toll plazas between MCO & Disney all have at least one lane that has a toll collector.

My point. If you get off to shop or if you're staying off site you may wind up at an exact change plaza. There might only be one full service lane open. Possibly longer line. I'd bring a roll of quarters, pay fees for rental billing or get an E Pass sticker

Thank you all for the info and tips on toll roads! If I hadn't looked up the driving directions I would never even have known they were there!

I bought the Sunpass removable transponder. I think it was about $20. I use it on every trip. I even used it on toll roads near Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
On a side note, EZ pass works on some of the toll roads around Orlando.

CFX Uni is cheaper, and also works in all E-ZPass states, in addition to all toll roads in FL. Just be sure you don't have 2 different unshielded transponders in the car, or you might get double-tolled.

I don’t think that was an option when I bought my transponder. I like it. The last time we dove down I put my EZ pass in the bag when we got close to Florida.

The FL Department of Transportation (which operates SunPass) is in the process of updating their toll systems and announced they will accept E-ZPass (supposedly by end of 2020). Once that interoperability is in place, you can close your SunPass account and use your E-ZPass while in FL. Georgia also announced they will accept E-ZPass starting sometime in 2021.

So all of FL will accept E-Z Pass and by extension, I-PASS?

Yay, that means I have to buy a carrying case for my I-Pass that I can take on the plane.

On our last trip ( October) I used google maps.. the non toll way was only 3 mins longer so I went with that.
I was shocked. The day we went to melborne beach I just took the tolls. It's been 3 weeks and I still have not seen the bill from Alamo but I'm figuring any day now.

Yes, but they said they were "working on" interoperability something like 5 years ago. Personally, I'll believe it when I see it.

Yes, IIRC it was rolled out about a year ago, initially as "EPass Xtra".

Yes. An exact start date has not yet been announced by the FL DOT.

I have no doubt that what you say is true for the toll roads in the Orlando area, and I know FDOT covers most of the toll roads in the state, but there IS at least one smaller toll authority (LEEWAY) in south Florida which I have not heard whether or not they will be adding E-Z Pass compatibility. Probably not a problem for the poster you responded to however.

Toll roads, bridges and tunnels are transitioning to cashless. You either have a transponder, sticker or are billed by plate. I believe Orlando area toll roads accept cash. I believe roads in other parts of FL are already cashless.

I bought mine in 2017.

I’ll probably keep it. The suction cups on the Sunpass make it much easier to move from car to car.
