Just wondering if this would be a good base hotel for touring Tokyo? Or is it too far out from the city? I know when we stayed at Paris Disney, it was a 45 minute train ride into Paris, so too far. Thanks for any info.

It takes about 15 min from Tokyo station on an express train, but that depends where on Tokyo you are going. Once you get to Tokyo station you will transfer depending on your final destination.

Actually it takes 31 minutes from Tokyo Disneyland Station to Tokyo Station, including the transfer time. And Tokyo Station is HUGE -- it can easily take you another 15 minutes or more to get to another track to make a connection.

In short, it is not convenient at all to stay at Tokyo Disneyland if you plan to spend much time in Tokyo. And there are much nicer hotels in Tokyo for the same amount of money you'll pay for one of the Disney hotels.

This is what I was afraid of.........So, can you recommend any good hotels in Tokyo - reasonably priced? We are looking at next summer. Thanks

Tokyo Disneyland makes Disneyland seem HUGE.

The place is packed, an VERY few if anyone that you meet will be speaking English. Sit near the back of many attractions and there translator phone that you can access.

On the rare chance that you hear someone in the park speaking English its pretty cool.

Try the New Sano (sp?) for rooms. Its a hotel for military personnel but may have an available room.

I was stationed in Tokyo with the Marine Corps in the 90's, so its been a while since we were there.

I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO HAVE YOU UNDERSTAND JUST HOW EXPENSIVE TOKYO IS

I did a ton of planning for a Toyko trip this summer (which, alas, fell through). But I found lots of choices for hotels we wanted in good places for around $200 night. That's not cheap, but a heck of a lot less than it takes to stay at Toyko Disneyland - especially the outragious point costs if you use DVC.

This is what we finally choose (before the trip fell through - do I sound bitter about that? I am) http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...kyu-Shibuya_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html . But as I said, there were lots of great choices.

Have a great trip!

I was in Tokyo in January and made a 1 day trip to Tokyo Disney Sea. I could not get a room with DVC for the top hotel there (forgot the name). However, when I went, I was glad that I didn't use the points to stay there. The hotel lobby is not very large and as soon as I entered, I smelled heavy cigarette smell. Many people smoke there and maybe it was in the winter time, all the smell was just trapped in there. Maybe it was cold, so the lobby was packed. It did not feel like a resort to me, too hectic and crowded for the space.

I was planning on going to Disneyland the next day and decided not to go. The language makes it not as enjoyable as I thought it would be. I did not know about the translater thing, but every time when I sat in a ride, I had no clue what they said except for Ariel when she switched between English and Japanese.

Taking the train to Disney from Tokyo was very easy and painless, I would much rather stay in Tokyo and just hop on the train to Disney.

It was an experience and I am glad that I went. It made me appreciate even more of Disney World in FL!!

Thanks to all who have replied! I am now looking at hotel reviews on Tripadvisor, etc, to begin looking at hotels. I have bookmarked the Shibuya Excel, as it sounds like it is smack in the middle of things. We will visit Disney maybe once or twice, but since the trip is about Japan rather than Disney, we will not use Disney hotels as a base. I think we have enough frequent flyer miles for most of us to fly for free, so that will help the sting of costs. My son is graduating college next May, and he majored in business/Japanese, so he wants to do this. I love to plan, so keep your comments coming! Thanks.
