I personally did not care for Tokyo Dining at all. This was by far my least favorite place on property and I have tried most of the restaurants. We tried it because of all the great reviews. We were on the dining plan so we ordered entrees and hate both of ours. Got the tempora app-it was ok nothing special just fried veggies that you can get at any carnival, I got the grilled fish for my entree and it was barely edible-had a gasoline flavor and veggies tasted frozen ones that I steamed at home. Green tea pudding was really good though-maybe I was just really hungry at that point Perhaps it was just an off night and we ordered the wrong things but I would try somewhere else if you are not getting sushi.
My DH is a total sucker for all things Japanese and LOVES sushi. I don't eat it. I believe I got a tempura dish, and remember being really happy. My suggestion is to make your ressies at about 8pm. That's what we had, and we were eating dessert during Illuminations, which the restaurant dims the lights and pumps in the music for. It was so much nicer than standing out in the heat with the crowd to watch!
After years and years of vacationing at WDW, we decided to try it. We had always dined at Teppan Edo (and Teppanyaki Dining before that) and thought that we would be disappointed with the atmosphere and food if we went to the other side. But this time we tried it and we absolutely loved it! I will admit, we love this type of Japanese food. We like the tempura, teppanyaki selections and sushi.
I have booked it again for our next trip. It's become one of our top favourites.
Just ate there 2 weeks ago, and it seems to have changed a bit since we ate there in July. Portions looked smaller - decent amount of meat, but rice and veggies were lacking. Also, tempura totally fell off of both kids' entrees too.
We don't eat sushi, so can't comment on that. We usually get the grilled meat entree and teriyaki chicken.
We won't be going back for awhile, as it's pretty expensive for what you get, especially the kids' meals, and all entrees went up in price since July.
After living in Japan for 3 years, I must say that Tokyo Dining is a very close representation of the food and atmosphere you would find in a "better" restaurant in Japan. The tempura is wonderful (even my picky DS11 loves it). We have to eat here every trip, or it just isn't a WDW trip

Thank you for posting that! I grew up eating at a friend of the family's Japanese restaurant, where most of the people cooking were from Japan or their parents were. I guess I got spoiled on the food. Plus there are a lot of wonderful Japanese restaurants and grocery stores in the Bay Area. I've been hesitant to try Tokyo Dining because I wasn't sure how the food actually was compared to what I was used to. Maybe we will try this next time!
We ate there in December and loved it. The view is unique, the CMs are very pleasant and outgoing (especially if your kids are studying Japanese in college) and the food was great. My DS and I loved the unagi appetizer, and the DW and DD loved the tempura.
