:( I have to go in on Tuesday because I broke my middle toe into 3 pieces and one fo the pieces is very very displaced :( He's putting a pin in it and apparently I have to wear this hideous cast shoe thing for 6 weeks!! I want to hear other peoples experiences and I'm a nervous wreck! :( My first broken bone and I went all out! :sad2:

Did you post when you broke the toe the other day? I think I replied to it then but I will tell you what happened to me. He did not put the pin in as he thought he would have to. It was my little toe and he cut it from top to joint. They gave me something to put me in " twilight sleep" and honestly I closed my eyes thinking I would open them in a sec and listen to what was going on. When I opened them it was over literally an hour went by and nothing. They put a pain block in and I was up and kind of overdoing it the first day. I had to stay in bed for 2 weeks with my foot higher than my heart to keep down swelling but the pain was NOT all that bad even on the first day. He gave me pain meds and I did not take them. He had to go in and remove a piece of bone but not do the pin thing. I had a crack and my toe was so bad I could not wear any shoes by the end only a pair of sneakers womans wide!

It has been like 7 weeks and I have had to buy a man's size 7 eeee sneaker but have only worn them once. I know I need to wear them and I will do it more next week but it is so hot that I just cannot face it. My doctor told me that it will just keep getting better and better. I suffered for over 10 years and you are lucky that your doctor is going to take care of it NOW. The boot thing is not bad either. You are lucky it is summer b/c I cannot even imagine doing this in the winter.

It really does take a full year for the foot to get back to pre break shape but till then you most likely wil be able to wear wide flats. I know it sounds bad but WIDE FLATS have been my life for so long that even they look good to me!!

For me that cast/shoe was the hardest part. It made my legs two different lengths and my hips started to hurt after a while. Other than that it really isn't too bad.

I had a like a shoe sandal thing not the boot that goes up the leg. If you hve the low cut one then just find a pair of shoes that are the same height. Idid have a problem with my back from the way I had to walk.

The shoe thing seems to be my biggest problem so far. I have the sandal one right now. Not sure what I'll have after the surgery but I was assured I wouldn't have an actual cast! I am very worried about this whole pin situation though :( I HATE THIS! :furious:

P.S. A GREAT business venture would be to make these ugly cast shoe sandal things cute and in different colors! I am telling you someone could make a fortune!

I had surgery on my big toe because the bone calcified and I had no movement in my toe, they had to go in and clean out the joints so I could walk without pain. I wore a low boot for 10 weeks, the first 6 weeks I was very restricted in walking (the first week I wasn't supposed to walk at all except to go to the bathroom.) The little boot thing wasn't bad, I had my daughters polish my 3 toe nails that were sticking out from the wrapping. The worst was not being able to get it wet at all. I had to take a shower backwards and stick my foot outside the shower curtain.

Then when I broke that same foot 4 months later I ended up with a walking cast on it. ( I did a full bone break and a hairline fracture). I called it the Frankenstein boot and I hated it! It was heavy, it threw me off balance cause it was higher than my shoes. Walking in it was a big pain.

yikes!!! i had a bunionectomy and a hammer toe reduction when i was 13!!! ( now 32) and i remember 2 pins 1 in my toe and 1 in the top of my foot. i remember a cast then that shoe. it was a pain but my feet have been excellent since the surgery. i had a top notch doc and my current ped. always remarks how great of a job he did since i was 13. i would say TAKE the pain pills for at least 4 days after and also use ibuprofen for the swelling. ice helps too. when you are all done & out of the boot try wearing birkenstocks, they will make your feet feel SO much better. you'll master the shoe and be almost back to normal in the thing after week 1. also be prepared for the Dr to REMOVE the pin in his OFFICE! ASK for a local shot in the foot 1st! i didnt get one and the pain/feeling of the pin removal was weird!!!! also you could hear it being removed all throughout your body, it was the strangest thing!!!

I heard if your feet stink you heal quicker :confused3

Good luck Meagan. I broke my toe but didn't need surgery. Hopefully surgery will make the healing process go a lot faster and smoother.
