Toddler Stroller question

We have decided that our youngest wont be going to Disney with us inOctober. So, the Sit and Stand stroller is not going to be needed. We do need a Toddler stroller for our 3 year old. He wont be able to hold up to walking all day long and have a good time. The problem I am having is that he is tall 43" and still growing. He is upper 50's in weight and is wide shouldered. The regular umbrella strollers look like he is wearing them. Is there something that any of you have used or seen that would fit the bill. Thanks

He is almost 60lbs at 3? Am I reading that right? I am not sure there are any lightweight strollers that go up to that weight limit. I know our stroller takes a lot of abuse at Disney and my 3 year old is only 33lbs, so I am not sure any umbrella type would hold up so well. Maybe you should use a jogger or rent one from WDW

Yes youi read it correctly. He is solid as a rock. He isnt fat although the figures would make you think that. He is a little boy inside of a big boys body. He is adopted and both sides of his biological families were tall people. When we went to Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago I ahd to buy him new sandles because he had outgrown his while we were there. I had to buy Size 13W.

I hoe someone can offer some advice.

DH modified our jogger to accommodate a 'seat' for DS6 when he needs a break

(note the Mickey Head in the wheel )

he added casters in the front (our jogger did not have a swivel front wheel, I hated that!) & he added casters in the back as well, it is very sturdy (& theoretically would hold 400#) (boy that ought to get 'em going )

Sorry, I was not implying he was fat. Just wanted to make sure I read right. YOu have one big boy on your hands. I bet you will have fun feeding him as a teenager. LOL

Anyway, I think for a child that size that a single jogger would work. Can you go to a local babies r us and try some out? My BRU has at least 3 dozen different strollers assembled to play with

I just saw your last post & maybe you might need to do some 'modifications' as well.........here are a few pics

original---the front wheel did not swivel (we've had it for yrs, prior to the swivel)

as I said we did it for a 'seat' for DS6, we enforced the back just for added support, we didn't need to do anything to the seat, you might need to add support to a seat.

The Maclaren's all have a wt max of at least 55lbs and the XLR goes up to 65lbs. We have a Maclaren Quest for our 4yo (58lbs, 49") and he fits great in it. While I realize the max wt is 55lbs, I'm comfortable going over that as it's not like a carseat where his life is in danger if it breaks. I figure the worst that will happen is I'm voiding the warranty which isn't all that important to me. It is quite sturdy and shows no sign of strain toting him and a few necessities around. The Macs are durable and lightweight and have a high canopy height which makes them great for older kids.

Jogging strollers also tend to be good for older / bigger kids, but a lot of them have low canopy heights. The Baby Jogger brand, with their dome canopies, are the best of the bunch in my book. Our other single is a Baby Jogger City Elite and it's awesome. Pricey but will work for all our boys as they grow. Also not nearly as lightweight as the Maclaren so not as convenient for travelling but very comfy for the kids.

I'd recommend either one for a larger kid. They're both quite popular so you may be able to find them in a local store to test drive.

We used a Chicco lightweight stroller for my daughter this past spring. She was 4 yrs and around 60 lbs. The weight limit is around 35, but I didn't realize that until after we'd used it, and it held her fine. It was easy to push and she was comfy.

I second the maclaren umbrella strollers. Super lightweight yet sturdy and they fold up quickly, shoulder strap for carrying, great for off/on the monorails, IMO they can't be beat.

Believe it or not I have the red umbrella type stroller that they sell in the gift shops at Disney, not sure if the still sell them I bought mine in Feb 2007, for $40. Our daughter was just two then, but we still use it, she weighs about 57 pounds and the only time I have trouble pushing it is when we have a bag hanging on the handles, that also has stuff in it. Otherwise it works great, best $40 I ever spent, and in case you are wondering I said umbrella type only because it folds in a similar way but is much more study and the seat is roomy and reinforced so she never looks like she is sitting in a hammock. I always felt like most umbrella strollers don't have enough back support especially when you're a bigger kid for your age and sitting in it for longer periods (Like hauling around WDW). Hope this helps

Another vote for Baby Jogger City series. We have the double version for our twins who are around 42" tall and there is still quite a lot of extra head room for growth. It wasn't cheap, but well worth the cost for us. What is good for you is that once this child grows out of it, you can use it for your younger one. You should get your money's worth, I would think. Joggers push more weight better, in our opinion. Our Baby Jogger City series pushes with ease with both kids sitting in it.

For a heavier child, I would probably just rent a stroller at the park. As much as I like to bring my own, I wouldnt want to purchase a new one since your son is already above the weight limit for most strollers....you would not get your money's worth out of it. I know the ones at the parks can hold quite a bit of weight......I've seen teens in them......and sometimes even adults LOL!!!!....(aside from being a bit heavy, the stroller actually pushed fine with him in it! And no, he's not really asleep, just pretending)

I would suggest the MacLaren Volo... they are the cheapest of the MacLaren line...can be found on ebay for a little less than stores. If that's still too much money, I would go to your local Babies R Us or Burlington Coat Factory (Baby Depot)...Burlington esp. has a huge variety of umbrella strollers--the cheap kind. They have some very large ones. I was surprised when I went there recently. DS is also 3 and is very tall (42") although not very heavy...we have the MacLaren volo but I wouldn't hesitate using a cheap umbrella stroller. Sometimes it looks more uncomfortable than it is. Like you said, it's for taking breaks from walking, so it wouldn't be used all day. I do not recommend renting a stroller from Disney. You would be able to buy a Mac Volo (or two) depending on how long you will be at the parks.

We bought the XLR because we knew we were going to Disney and would have a 3 month old, but also wanted something that was safe for my 4 y.o DS.
It worked perfectly.
My niece who's 6 and about 60 lbs used it and was just fine.

ChristusG, thanks for sharing the photo of the stroller at the park. I was wondering what they looked like. I am in the same/similar situation to the original poster of this thread. My soon to be 3 year old is 40 inches tall and 40 lbs. Dr. says he will be about 6ft 3in when he grows up. At this rate, he'll be taller than me by the time he goes to kindergarden (lol).

We are debating stroller options. We are in Florida and will drive to the park. We are staying off-site at a timeshare, which means if we use our own stroller we have to load/unload on the trams, monorail, etc.

I would love some input from the forum on the following options, in terms of what may work best:

Option 1: Regular Graco Stroller, folds easily, but doesn't recline flat. Has good storage underneath, manuvers well, and is lightweight.

Option 2: Jeep Jogging Stroller. Does not fold easily. Does recline flat. Has good storage underneath, manuvers well, and is a smooth ride.

Option 3: Renting a stroller from WDW. Concerns about unloading and carrying stuff to our car, and maneuverability.

Your thoughts???

The one ChristusG posted a picture of is a double, which is better for larger single riders.

Here's a picture of the single WDW stroller. All the parks have similar strollers, just the color is different.

oh, thanks! We are travelling with friends who also have a 3 yr old. I'll see if they want to go dutch on a double stroller. It is good to know that is an option. Thanks for the single stroller pic too!!

I'd go with Option 2 as your DS will be most comfortable (able to nap, kick back with cold sippy, etc.). Even though it's harder to fold than the Graco, taking an extra minute the few times you need to collapse it is no big deal as you're surrounded by parents doing the exact same thing.

My boys never really cared for the WDW strollers as they are hard plastic and don't recline. The molded seat is fine for sitting but the whining started when they couldn't lean back and get comfy. Plus, with a rental you'll be stroller-less for the walk out of the park to the monorail or bus and if DS is tired you may end up carrying hm. Personally, I like always having a stroller handy as in our case the kids outnumber us so I like the containment factor of having at least one strapped in!
