and Letterman has stated very sincerely that he would never joke about this situation concerning a 14 year old and never find that kind of thing funny. Clearly someone messed up and confused which DD was there. It has been addressed. You can choose not to believe him, but then you are just putting words in his mouth - words which he adamantly denies!!!!

Palin could do the classy thing and graciously accept his explanation - and call for an apology based on the comment toward the older one. However, continuing to insist that he was talking about the rape of a fourteen year old is what keeps her in the news.

I don't think Letterman had any idea who was at the game or not. That is writers job, I just wish he was more sincere about his apologize. He isn;t dropping so quick himself.

as an aside - and not to excuse anyone:

the Palins were here in AUburn the day before the game. In the picture in our news they are riding in the parade. I looked at the pic and thought it was Bristol!!!! It wasn't until I read the article that I realized it was a younger sister.

but then again, I am not a writer/researcher whose job it is/ who is getting paid to get these things correct!

huge blunder and in bad taste - sure.

It was an attempt at a joke - the "joke" ultimately being on Letterman, given that it wasn't funny.

If he made the same joke about my fourteen year old daughter, no, I wouldn't be happy. On the other hand, I wouldn't be on The Today Show discussing it either.

Letterman HAS apologized, and seems sincere.

It seemed anything but sincere to me - he tried to make himself not sound like a complete pervert by implying that he was really talking about the 18 year old instead of the 14 year old.

I fail to see how thinking it was Bristol makes it any better????? She is still a very young woman, a young mother. I think Dave needs to retire, he hasn't been funny for a long time.

Then perhaps he should confine his jokes like this to his own family.

I am pretty sure he has.

For one thing, there is a big difference between mature adult and essentially "babies having babies"

Also, he and his family don't tout their holier than thou morals - so there isn't that hypocrisy to the situation. I haven't seen Dave's wife on all the news programs pushing abstinence... THEY are a pretty private family - unlike the Palins!!!

He WAS joking about the 18 year old who WAS previously knocked up.

I find the expression "knocked up" totally disgusting. And the fact that she is a young mother makes it OK to make these kind of jokes? It is wrong on so many levels. :sad2:

it does - only in the sense that Palin insists on hyping the "rape of a 14 year old" angle. If this angle weren't "worse" - Palin wouldn't be pushing it.

most of us agree the remark was in poor taste - given its INTENDED meaning.

everyone is going to have their own take - it is to be expected.

Still doesn't excuse Palin's milking it for everything it worth - to her!

Like I said before if Letterman didn't say the disgusting comment then Palin would have nothing to be "milking" as you put it.

I think Letterman said the comment just to get some attention to his failing show. Its one show I will definately never catch again. He is just too much of a perverted dirty old man who thinks these kinds of things are funny.

I'm not a David Letterman fan and I don't think that he is funny. The joke was in bad taste and he apologized in his way. I think people who are saying that he should be more sincere are wanting him to not be himself. That was his sincere apology. He was very non-joking when he said that he never meant to make a joke about a 14 year and did not think that such a joke would be funny.

I would not be happy that I thought someone was making a joke like that about my young DD. At the same time if I was in the public eye and I had an older DD who did get knocked up as a teen I would expect jokes about it. How many jokes were there about Jamie Lynn Spears when she got pregnant? Where was the outrage over that?

Yes, there is a difference between a young girl having a child out of wedlock and an old night show host who is supposed to be mature and who should know better. Yet, he wants to hold a young woman up to public ridicule. I think he is what he is - just a pathetic old man trying to chase his youth.

maybe it isn't about "knowing better", but about having a different belief about the importance of being married first? Many people in this day and age do not hold the belief of marriage before sex/children.

and, really, which is worse?? Someone that touts deeply held beliefs about marriage first/abstinence and then makes that mistake OR someone for whom this is not an issue and NOT a "mistake" but a choice????!!!

so, he didn't make a mistake - she did..so your argument doesn't hold.

Meh. It was a joke. Poor taste, indeed. But he apologized.

It is Palin and her "rape" comments that are keeping this going. A bit over the top if you ask me. She is just as weird as Letterman.

So, is incest ok to joke about in the Palin home?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRXQ2ZueP5c

She then went on and yukked it up with the cast of SNL. Strange.

And there's your answer. You don't like Dave, don't watch him. Not into porn? Don't view it. Hate Fox News? Block the channel. Lactose intolerant? Avoid the dairy.
Make your choices and let others do the same.

what???

many want to claim it HAS to be about Willow because she was at the game.

However, when you think about it the joke doen't even work if it is about her. The joke only "works" if it is a play on BOTH the past promiscuity of Bristol and the promiscuity of ARod. Willow isn't known for being this way.

the most logical conclusion is that it was meant to be about Bristol and someone at the Letterman show messed up.

(again, not saying the joke is funny or OK)

Hey! Whats the deal with using common sense on the DIS? I didn't think that was allowed.;)

Yes, but you have to think for 1/2 of 1 second to figure this out. :sad2: Was it a mistake? Yes. Did Letterman discuss this on air and admit that? Yes. Many of the offended haven't listened to what he politely said in reply to Mrs. Palin. Sadly, it's turned into a convenient media attention getter.

Letterman was totally wrong. And he has yet to apologize. I have not heard the words "I apologize" come out of his mouth.

This wasn't a joke, it was a personal attack on Palin's daughter. Completely and absolutely inexcusable!!!

Anyone who can justify Letterman saying the things he said, just doesn't get it.
