On August 21, 1959, President Eisenhower signed an executive order proclaiming Hawaii the 50th state of the union.

On August 21, 1991, a hard-line coup against Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev collapsed in the face of a popular uprising led by Russian federation President Boris N. Yeltsin.

On August 21, 1997, Hudson Foods Co. closed a plant in Nebraska, agreeing to destroy some 25 million pounds of hamburger after the largest meat recall in U.S. history.

thank you for helping me learn something new today

Very interesting...thanks! :)

P.S. This reminds me of an episode of Happy Days....... they had a "Welcome Hawaii to the Union" party in one of the episodes. LOL

Hummm! 25million pounds of hamburger. Now that's a lot of meatloaf.

I loved Hawaii, Such a beautiful place.

Thanks, Deb.

Very interesting today, Deb. I remember I was started 5th grade right after Hawaii entered the union and I was confused. I thought it was already a state because the US entered WWII after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Thanks for doing this for us :)
