Today I love the IRS

froglady,

You are correct about the flat tax. If everyone was taxed the same %, the ones who made less would pay less and the ones who made more would pay more, but the % would be the same.

If the US went to just a flat tax, would you really beable to get rid of doing returns all together or would there still be the need for a person to file one.

You'd still have to file for things like interest, mystery shopping, eBay, etc. income that isn't automatically taxed.

A flat tax would be easy but I think it would eliminate too many jobs.

I personally have no problem taxing the wealthy at a higher rate. You certainly wont hear me crying because Oprah has to pay 35% in taxes.

The news clip they showed on tv had a few poor families on saying they planned to take their kids on vacation with their EIC dollars. They went on to say their families had never taken a vacation and they were ecstatic about it! Or they were buying new furniture because they had run down, torn, smelly stuff that was bought second hand. Who are you to say that "poor" people shouldn't and don't derseve to treat themselves to a luxury they could otherwise not afford?

I receive the EIC and I use that money to do extra stuff for my child that I wouldn't otherwise be able to do because almost all of my income goes to pay my bills and put a roof over his head. If that means a vacation somewhere, or a luxury item, so be it. FTR, my trip in 2 weeks was paid for with my xmas bonus ;)

If there was no EIC given to anyone, trust me the government would find some useless way to spend your tax dollars, it's not like you would be taxed less if it wasn't around :teeth:
You keep bringing up all of these "other" people, when I'm speaking specifically of the OP. Perhaps they will post their business for all of the world to see, then we can discuss their situations. I also wouldn't consider the OP "poor".

But if we're going to generalize, I'd rather those poor people you speak of use the money to continue their education and get a better paying job. Then they'll have plenty of cash at their disposal to redecorate their homes and take nice vacations. Because we all know that those of us in the middle class are swimming in the dough :rolleyes2 . Besides, I can count on 2 fingers the number of vacations my family took (and they weren't much to speak of), and I'm no worse for wear. Oh, btw, we also had a second hand couch and other furnishings ;) *gasp*

Back to the topic at hand. Who are you to tell me that I have no right to express my displeasure on the way my tax dollars are used? Oh, I know...you happen to disagree with me. Do you honestly believe that the EITC was created so that type of spending could go on?

Let's replace deserve for a moment, because this is really what is being said:

My family is entitled to a vacation because they've never had one before.
I'm entitled to an LCD TV because I've never had one before.
I'm entitled to a new stereo for my car because the one in there is not up to my standards.
I'm entitled to a new couch because my old one is wearing down.
I'm entitled to a pool table because instead of going to a garage sale and picking up a dining room second hand, this one will do double duty.
I'm entitled to a new designer handbag because I can't be seen with one from Target or JC Penny

--and I don't have the money to do this on my own, so I'm entitled to a handout to get the things I'm entitled to. So give me some of your money and shut up about it.

Call me what you will, but I don't think anyone "deserves" any of that. Why do you deserve more because you're poor? (That's "you" in a general sense, not you-Summerrluvv)

FTR, I feel like I'm "entitled/deserve ;) " to keep more of the money we earn. And I don't spend money on luxuries we cannot afford, so why is it OK for "poor" people to?

I have seen posts on this thread and other tax return threads with concerns on how tax returns are spent and I'm wondering something. Are these spending concerns more with the people who get returns by using the EIC credit, or how people spend tax returns in general.

I think the concern is with people using the EIC credit, since it is intended for low income people.

It seems like the thinking is, if you qualify, you are considered low-income by the government, so spending the amount of the EIC credit on luxury purchases is often looked down upon.

A regular tax refund is simply due to an overpayment of taxes.

I could care less how you spend your own money.

The government has sent the money to the people that qualify for the EIC so therefore it IS their money. Clearly you do care because you keep ranting about it.

I digress. Back to preparing dinner. Have fun :)

well my sister did this for years i thought it was wrong, we had huge fights over it
i still think its wrong
you only get what you put in
if you dont make enough $ to buy the things you want you have to change your life to get them

Where did "your" money come from :)? Would you willingly take money away from your family to give to someone else to buy an LCD TV?

summerrluvv and Free4Life11

Thanks for the clarification. I guess all I have to say is be upset at how the EIC system is set up not so much at those who use it. If the system was set up differently, then this might not even be an issue.

So, then, I guess I shouldn't take my kids to WDW for vacation this year with my EIC money? :rotfl2:

Why? Do you think that she, or anyone else "wealthy," doesn't deserve that money? Is her having Xmillion dollars taking something away from you? Is she taking money away from you without your permission? Why should she, or anyone else, be punished for being sucessful? :confused3

I just don't care if the government taxes the wealthy at a higher rate. No explanation, it just doesn't bother me and I don't considering higher taxes punishment. I also don't consider taxes a punishment.

Well, let's see if you feel the same way if you make something out of your life and then have to give the gov. 35% of your hard earned money. :thumbsup2

 I am making something of my life thank you very much.

And for the record, technically no one pays 35%, since it's only 35% of the amount over, roughly, $325,000.

Don't have to have money to have made something out of your life . . .

and that 35% is only starting with the Feds. It certainly doesn't end there! I bet Oprah employs more people than those getting the EIC on the board here too and by taxing her a higher rate, it could be keeping her from employing even more. It doesn't begin and end with Oprah either. Bet no one getting the EIC can say that.

Just so all those who feel they are entitled understand, there are MANY people who work who do not qualify for the EIC who can not afford a vacation of any kind. I am not bashing you for taking the money, as I've said a million times already, I think you'd be foolish not to. But coming to a public board and bragging about what you can now do with that money has a tendency to incite quite a reaction. Like I said, many who actually earned that money, have never and will never be able to take a vacation. If you can't understand how that could get someone a little pissy, well.....I doubt anything will get thru to you!
