To tux or not to tux...

Okay - DH is finally **thinking** about buying/renting a tux for our 7-day. Obviously he'd wear it for formal night. What about semi-formal night? Do many guys where tuxedos on semi-formal night? He intends to bring a dark suit also, but I just hoped we could maximize the use of the tux without looking out of place. TIA!

I rented a tux last year on the cruise and wore it on formal and semi-formal night. There were not a ton of people wearing a tux on semi-formal night, but there were some. I plan on doing the same on my upcoming cruise in October.

My DH just purchased a new Tux and will wear it on Formal and Semi-Formal Night, we also have two dinners @ Palo so he'll also bring his suit.

Tux or not Tux...the answer is Tux. And bravo for DH...helps make the whole night classy for everyone else as well as you.

The rentals, FYI, come w/ 2 shirts. I've never worn my tux or a rental (I've done it both ways depending on how heavy I felt like packing) on semi-formal night, and agree there are some, but not many. It is very appropriate for a gentleman to wear a tux to dinner, generally. One exception--if on semi-formal night you are in Parrot Cay, ....hmmm....I think that's one of the nights I break out the mickey tie with the blue blazer...

My DH purchased a tux a few years ago for our 7-night cruise, and he wore it for both formal and semi-formal night. Now, for both nights, he had 2 separate Disney vests & cumberbunds that we purchased on eBay. He wore the black/white Mickey one on Formal night, and the more colorful one on semi-formal night.

If he is bringing a suit, don't rent a tux as well. The majority of men wear suits or even just shirts and ties.

If you can get him to leave the suit home and if he'll wear a tux, and you don't mind renting, I would rent it, but for a strange reason.

A suit or even your own tux, is VERY heavy. I was amazed how heavy our bag was with 2 suits (dh and ds) in it. If they rental comes with shoes, even better!

Hired a tux last two cruises wore it once both times, I am taking a suit this time which can double up as fine trousers without jacket.

DH got the cruiselineformal.com package with two jackets (traditional tux and white dinner jacket). He wore the black jacket on formal night and the dinner jacket on semiformal night.

Our two sons (13 & 17 at the time) had the basic tux package plus dress shoes, and wore those on both nights.

Renting worked out very well for us - it was nice not to worry about transporting 3 tuxes from home to WDW to DCL and home again!

On a couple of cruises I took a black suit and wore that for both formal and semi-formal night. On another I rented a tux through cruiselineformal.com, did the white dinner jacket and was very happy with it. Right before our 05 cruise, JC Penney was and still is carrying a tux for $100, plus the shirt package, which I think was $30, it included the shirt cumberbun, tie, studs and cufflinks. I figured that's only a little bit more than a rental, and I plan on cruising again. So this September I'm taking my tux, just got a great Mickey vest from e-bay and I wear the whole package on formal night. On semi-formal night I'll wear the jacket and pants with a deep red shirt and black silk tie. I am also taking a seperate suit for Palo.

I refused to wear a tux when I got marrried. When my sisters got married I made them rent them for me. When we went on our last cruise I wore a sports jacket. I could not tell you what anybody eles wore. I was comfortable in my sports jacket. Uncomfortable when I had to wear a tux in my sisters weddings

DH, Dad, Uncle and ds5 had tuxes. The men got them from JCPenney for $100. Very sexy looking.

They wore them with the black/white Mickey tie/cummerbund on formal night and plain black at Palo (on semi-formal night).

I have some priceless picture of my family all dressed up.

I've worn a tuxedo on both formal and semi-formal nights whenever we've done the 7 day. I enjoy doing it and my DW appreciates that I wear them as well. As others on this thread have noted not many wear a tux on semi-formal night though. I for one neither felt out of place nor did I feel over dressed and intend to do the same on our next cruise.

I wore the rented tux on both formal and semi-formal nights. On the semi-formal nights I did not wear the cumberbun (or the vest), so it kinda sorta just looked like a suit. This was the first and only time that I have worn a tux on a cruise - since it was for 14 nights and we had 2 formal, 2 semi formal and a dinner at Palo I figured - what the heck. I usually wear slacks and a dress shirt and a tie on formal nights and skip the tie on semi formal nights (I'm NOT Kevin Yee :lmao: but I don't go all out - I don't bring a pirate costume for pirates night either).

Here's something I put together a few years ago

Clothes Hierarchy

The Tuxes :snooty: look down upon the suits
The Suits look down upon the sport coats
The Sport Coats look down upon the dress shirts
The Dress Shirts look down upon the polo shirts
The Polo Shirts look down upon the tee shirts
The Tee Shirts look down upon the tank tops
The Tank Tops look down upon the swimming suits

and so it goes:)

and everyone looks down on me because I'm wearing sandals and dark socks :earseek: but at least I'm NOT wearing shorts to dinner

and everyone is also staring at Kevin Yee because he's ... he's ... he's ... he's .... wearing "formal" clothes to Pirates Night!!

My son wore his tux on formal night and semi formal. He loved it. I think he would have worn it every night if I let him! There were others on both of these nights with tuxes on.

jrabbit- :rotfl2: black socks and sandals? are you sure you're not Kevin? ;)

Poor Kevin, he is fast becoming a living legend here at the Dis boards!!

My DH is taking his suit. He's not keen on renting a tux. As he is the Imelda Marcos of suits I am not pushing it, as he will rush out and want to buy himself one!

Dh and ds are both going to wear tuxes on our next cruise. Dh is still up in the air about buying something from Penny's or renting because of packing issues. There are five of us, three of which are females who tend to overpack. :tilt:

In case we're not lucky on ebay- any other places to get the Mickey ties and cumberbunds? TIA

Julie

If you rent a tuxedo through DCL, be sure to try it on the first day you are on the ship. Since they are using measurements that come from an outside source sometimes mistakes do happen. On the Eastbound Repo Cruise last summer my wife prevailed upon me that it would be great if I and our 3 DS all wore tuxes on the 2 formal nights (14 day cruise). It was a good thing that I tried mine on - the tuxedo company had totally missed on the sleeve length - the jacket sleeve were an inch beyond the end of my fingers!

A quick call to Guest Services got a very positive response - they would connect me to the Cast Wardrobe department. The Wardrobe Dept. asked if it was OK to make an appointment for a CM to come to our cabin the next day. The CM was wonderful - she couldn't help but laugh at the site of the way the sleeves hung beyond my hands. Measured it, and took the jacket away. That night it was back. She said I was so smart to try it the first night - if I had left it to the last minute they may not have been able to respond since they have responsiblities in the theater!

The pictures of my wife and her 4 men were worth it, but I don't think I will go the tux route again - they are more work than a regular suit. ( THink about putting the stud buttons in the shirts for 3 boys then having to do your own!) I will wear a suit next time.
