P.S.
This yr, for the first time, I made up envelopes before I left so the tip did not have to come out of my funds once I was there. It helped a lot and I did not have to think about it again - just put out an envelope every morning before we left the room!
Read that idea somewhere on these Boards
Thanks!!

I agree the tipping is a bit out of control. I personally got angry when my friend who is a financial planner gets his yearly "bonus" to Jamacia for the mediocre(SP?) job he does. I got to work as an L&D RN' ressitate a newborn, and where is my bonus???. BUT, this is the profession I have chose. Yes, teachers are underpaid.
However I can't figure out how my lack of tipping would change that.
I guess if I'm making a choice to tip mousekeeping INSTEAD of supporting teachers and education, there'd be a good point there. But that's not the case with me, and I doubt its the case with anybody else here.

A tip is NOT to make up for someones low wage. A tip is meant for only fantastic service above and beyond the call of duty. You going to start tipping the cashier at Burger King next because they only make about $7 an hour?
.....-------------------------------------
People now figure that tipping is part of a persons wage when it shouldn't be.
Tipping is supposed to be an encouragement and a thank you for doing an outstanding job beyond the call of duty of what you were hired for NOT to make up on wages. Its the practice of tipping, whether the person deserves it or not, thats caused problems for alot of people like waitresses in the United States (I know never to be a waitress now after the laws I've been hearing about. In Canada it would have been tolerable but not in the United States for any reason) where the employer has them working almost for free.
If someone wants a tip, then give me exceptional service and it won't be any 20%. Ettiquete says only 10%, not 20%. 20 is much too excessive.
Hopefully I have good karma since I save lives for a living AND tip well!

... it makes me feel GOOD to tip--if I can make someone's day by giving them a decent tip, why not do it?? Like DH and I say to each other, if the difference between a good tip and a great tip is just a few dollars, why not give someone a great tip and make their day??
And don't forget karma!!Hopefully I have good karma since I save lives for a living AND tip well!

We do not do it out of obligation, we really do it to share our happiness that we can afford to take a vaction in a beautiful place, that we have good jobs and good health.
We taught our DD that tipping well is just like saying the blessing prior to eating.....it is just an aknowledgement that we are so blessed that we like to share with the people that touch our lives when providing service.
