To Tip or Not To Tip (long)

Aw........ I don't mind threads getting brought up from the dead but this one??? Urgh.

I've had enough tipping discussions on the DIS for the rest of my life :)

Now..my list for Disney World employees:

Tip Worthy

-Cocktails at an bar/pool lounge etc. This is a no brainer. Bartenders work for tips. I generally tip .50-1.00 per drink.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, because I was too lazy to read the whole thread :rotfl: but when I was in WDW last week and I paid for our drinks at the pool bar with the Disney Gift Card, I was given a receipt I needed to sign and it indicated the amount of an 18% tip as well as a 20% tip. I realize these are guidelines, but I'm sorry, I agree with OP and usually give .50 or a dollar per drink, not 18% or 20%, especially when they're twisting the cap off of a beer or using a drink machine that has pre-made drinks in it. JMHO

Nicely said! Great point :) On that note, I once purchased a simple cup of coffee from a Dunkin Donuts and I paid cash for it. To my surprise, the cashier took it upon herself to take her own tip from the change that I was owed, so instead of giving me my change back, (no she did not forget I was owed change) she held onto it in her hand and was about to put it in the change cup when I politely requested my change. She gave it back to me with some attitude. I was flabbergasted at (1) the presumption that someone felt that a cup of coffee (pouring coffee into a cup) deserved a tip and (2) that the cashier felt entitled enough to think that they could make a decision of what to do with my money that I earn through my own hard work!! Mind you, the change was under a dollar, yet regardless of the amount of money, the principal of it is what matters!

:scared1::eek::sad2:

This is what Disney writes on its flyers that it gives out to resort guests.

TIPPING

We are often asked about gratuities. At the Walt Disney World resort, it is customary to tip the following positions for exceptional service: bartender, bell services, cocktail server, food and beverage server and valet parker.

Does not mention housekeeping. Many guests, however, prefer to tip housekeepers. There is no proof that receipt or non-receipt of towel animals is related in all cases to giving tips. Magical Express drivers are not Disney employees, so they would not be mentioned in Disney's literature.

there is a thread dedicated to tipping and discussions regarding tipping outside of that dedicated thread are not allowed

That is true on the Disney Restaurants board and sub-boards. As far as I know there is no similar rule outside of those boards.

After I sat here and read this entire thread, I wonder...

since Disney does not recognize the mousekeeper as a "tipped" position, do they allow them to keep their tips??? :confused3

I know I read on another thread it said that some tips are collected and used to purchase food or other items that the employees share. It might have been in one of the club level threads, but I am just curious to know. I could see that they would not have to tell that they even received a tip, but just wonder what Disney's position on the mousekeeper tips is.

This is a topic that I have been thinking about for our upcoming trip. I have never tipped a housekeeper, except for Disney. I was always under the impression I had paid for that service when I paid for the room. I assumed that service was built into their rates. But you know I read it on the DIS, but I felt uncomfortable doing it, not sure why :confused3 When you pay hundreds of dollars a night for a room, it would seem housekeeping would be part of that and based on Disney's tipping policy, I think they feel it is included too.

I do see it is a personal decision...I think I have made mine! :hippie:

I did not read the whole thread so I do not know if this fact has been mentioned. Housekeeping is one of the roles that College Program cast members can be employed in. In general, CPs are not assigned to roles that are considered tipped positions. On the website it specifies certain roles as "non-tipped positions" (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiue, bell services, full service food and beverage). I thought it included housekeeping in the non-tipped roles but I see that that's not the case. Perhaps this is because most people applying for the college program would not expect housekeeping to be a tipped role (because it's more than likely that most of their traveling was done with family/some adult taking care of things like tips). Either way, I am pretty sure that as a practice they don't assign CPs to tipped roles so that would imply that housekeeping is not a tipped role.
