To sell/buy or not too? That is the question

Okay....We've been DVC members since 2007 and bought at our current home resort "Wilderness Lodge". Now, we love it, but we have now fallen more in love with "Animal Kingdom Lodge".

So, we thought about buying into AKL and also to sell our VWL and purchase AKL.

What are you opinions? We greatly appreciate them and would like to hear what you think.

Is it worth it?

Thanks,

I would probably keep VWL until the time came that I couldn't book at AKV unless I knew I wouldn't be happy staying at VWL, that I wanted the longer contract term or had to have some of the limited booking categories at AKV.

I think they are both very nice in there on way , but if I had a choice it would be AKL over vwl .

Although I adore Kidani (my home), were I you I'd save up and buy a second contract :goodvibes We stay at VWL as much as we stay at Kidani these days. Adore them both.

Not worth the transaction costs. However, you could have sold before the DVC rules changed and bought after the rule change to maximize the spread, but that time has passed.

It is generally harder to book VWL than AKV at the 7 month mark and unless you need a special room at AKL, then give it a few more years to see what develops, you may want to buy the new GF when it opens.

We looked into this after our first BLT stay--we prefer BWV, where we own most of our points. The selling costs were prohibitive, so we've just kept BLT and stay there every few trips for a few days.

Unless you were always having trouble booking AKV at 7 months, I would stay put. The transaction costs will eat away at some of your $$.

I have been where you are, twice, now and ended up going with what I knew that I would love.

I bought VWL to start my DVC membership, knowing I really wanted BLT--but I did it so I could buy in with less directly, since I would be a member.

After only two months of owning VWL, I knew I just really wanted to own at BLT so sold and re-bought at BLT. I took a small loss to do that--about $500but have not regretted that decision at all.

This year, I decided that I really wanted to own at BWV as well as BLT so that we had home resorts is both the Epcot area and MK area. Having now stayed in both, I knew that this was ideal. We love to walk to the parks and really wanted to know getting one of the Epcot resorts for a split stay wasn't going to be a hope but a guarantee.

So, DH and I decided to buy BWV. Since I couldn't find the right size contract, I bought extra points and put one of our small BLT contracts up for sale to accomplish our goal.

In the end, did we take another small loss on the BLT contract as well--yes. But, at the end of the day, we will own the places that we love and go on for there. DVC is a big purchase and IMO, owning where you love, especially if where you stay is important (it is crucial to our stays), so own where your heart will be happy.

We do own where we want to stay, but sometimes we like to stay, just for a bit at BLT. I'm not going to sell something to buy BLT, because, I've been able to get into BLT enough, and I would take a loss on whatever I would sell.

Now, are you at an age that the extra years at AKV is worth something to you? I could see buying into AKV as additional points, if you need them, but I would not sell VWL to buy AKV. AKV is large enough to get into it at 7 months.

Ditto. AKV is one of the larger DVC properties so you shouldn't have much trouble booking there at the 7 month window. VWL is one of the smallest DVC properties so having the home resort advantage will be beneficial when you choose to stay there.

The only reason I'd even consider switching is if you wanted to regularly book Concierge at AKV. Otherwise there really is no need and you'll end up losing money in the process.

Keep VWL. I've been a mamber since 2002 and have yet been able to get a ressie there when I wanted one.

Sound advice. Unless you absolutely need Value or Concierge-category rooms, I don't think it will be a problem for some time---and by then, your preferences may have changed once more.

I have now realized that VWL is tough to book at 7-months. I thought the complete opposite.

Also, someone hit it on the head. We did an out-of-pocket AKL Concierge and we loved it. We had most our meals there at AKV. We don't eat much and the selection of food was fine for us. I know that sounds crazy, but were not big eaters when we are running around all day at the parks.

I failed to mention that we also have recently bought BCV, which we really wanted since we visit in October mostly and when that F&W festival is going on, we know BCV is near impossible to book at 7-months.

Well, maybe if I hold out about another year....we'll just add a AKV contract. :thumbsup2

These are the only three DVC resorts that I'd consider buying. BLT looks nice and close, but we have VWL already.

Thanks again for opening my eyes about VWL waitlist at 7-months.

Cheers
