To Poly or not to Poly?

We are currently planning our 12 day Disney Vacation (early next December) and we want to stay on site for a few days. I've wanted to stay at the Poly ever since the first time I saw it! But I'm wondering is it really worth it? We will be staying for 4 or 5 nights at the begining of our trip (and then switching to an off-site property.) I'd really like to stay on property for the first few days and I know I really don't want a value resort but I guess I'm trying to justify over $1000 for just a few nights at the Poly.

Help!

BTW, what's the best rate I could expect to get for a room at the Poly in early Dec (we will have APs then.)

Thanks!:earsgirl:

Garden view w/AP discount during the regular season is currently $229, so my guess would be right around $200/nt. for garden view during value season next year. For us, you can't beat the location of the Poly, nor the atmosphere. It's so easy to get anywhere. Coming back to the relaxing tropical surroundings of the Poly after a day at the parks is priceless. It's also great to never have to leave the magic. My only thought is, I'd do off-prop. first and finish up on-prop if possible; once you get spoiled by the magic of the Poly, you might not want to stay anywhere else.

I was going to suggest doing off property first and then the Poly.

I really like the Poly. This will be our second stay there and the first with DD (3). The main reason is location! Plus we like the overall theme. :)

I don't think you will regret it. :)

I think it's worth it... the Polynesian is a wonderful resort. If you go with a GV... ask for the Fiji Longhouse and ask for the view of the marina... You get a GREAT view with only a GV pricetag... Here is a link to Tikiman's site .. alot of great information...

Whatever choice you make, you'll have a good time!

I have to agree with SteveandDonna. We always begin our vacation off property and end on property. It's almost like 2 different vacations, and to end with the magic of staying on the WDW property is wonderful. The Poly is such a wonderful resort. The atmosphere cannot be beat- it is a beautiful place- you'll love it.

All I can say is there is NOTHING like seeing the castle as the last thing you see before going to bed and the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning. If you can, try to get a lagoon view with a view of the castle. It is heaven.:lovestruc

It is worth it!!! Once you are there, you will forget the cost and you will be kicking yourself for not staying there sooner. Shoot for Fuji/marina view or Samoa/volcano side... but you can't go wrong with any longhouse. If you have to stay off/prop, do it first. otherwise, you will not leave.

The best price we've managed at the Poly was $198 for a garden view in January. I had also wanted to stay there ever since my first time in WDW, and we spent 8 nights there in 2000 (the children were 4 & 7 on that trip) and 4 nights again earlier this year. I, too, agree that it's best to start off-site or in a value/moderate first, and save the best for last. During our 2000 trip we couldn't get any additional nights at the Poly and spent the first 2 nights off-site at HIFS. I really enjoyed HIFS, but I know we would have been disappointed if we'd done it in the reverse order.

Yes, it's worth the money to us. I love the easy access to the monorail, the pool, the large rooms, the rabbits, the tiki torches, 'Ohana, the water pageant, being greeted by everyone with "aloha" and a couple of dozen other things. The laid back air at the Polynesian is a perfect contrast to the hectic pace at the theme parks.

Sometimes when you have a long-cherished dream, the reality ends up being so much less than the dream. In the case of staying at the Polynesian, I'm happy to say that the reality lived up to the fantasy.

Have a great trip.

I say Poly! I fell in love with the Poly in July and can't wait to go back..absolutly incredible!

Good luck with your decision!

NOTHING compares to the Poly. Once you go, you are spoiled - you are in the clutches of the Poly forever!:p Seriously, it is my FAVORITE resort and I have been going since 1980 and have stayed at ALL the resorts.

I definately love the Poly, but I agree stay off site first! Cause once you go Poly nothing else compares!

we agree stay off site first then finish your trip by staying at the Poly a great ending to a great trip you wont want to leave

The Poly has the best transportation options. Walk to TTC with mono or bus to epcot or mgm or ak. Boat or mono to MK. And boat to MK with transfers to campground. Or take bus from the Poly. It's the best. Mark

we loved staying at the POly last december, great for hopping back and forward to MK. Also I loved wandering through the garden to get my morning coffee and hear the railroad, and also the music drifting over the bay.....fantastic.

Unfortunately we can't afford to do it again for a long time, but I shall treasure our xmas there.

1st stay on property? Great location, theming beyond belief and should you decide to jump to a water view, the castle at night will captivate you!

By the way, it will be nearly impossible to leave the poly and go off site!!! LOL

Have fun.

The Polynesian is a terrific resort. I really think you won't regret it. The location, the landscaping and the rooms are all first-class. I think if you look you can find some good rates that won't inflate your budget by too much. There's a lot of good advice to be found on these boards.

My problem right now is trying to choose which resort! It's so hard! :hyper:

is to definitely POLY. We stayed there for the first time in February and it quickly became our favorite resort. We've stayed at several Disney resorts so we have a lot to compare it to. You'll love the location, the views, the landscaping, the tropical feel, the food and drink, and the wonderful cast members. As you can see from the other posts, you don't have to pay rack rate. You can get the Poly for less than $250 a night if you do a little research. I would never pay rack rate for ANY deluxe resort.

Now - my second bit of advice to you is this. DON'T STAY OFF-SITE. We did it once and it truly ruined it for us. I want to be immersed in the Disney magic from morning til' night and I especially don't want to have to deal with driving or taking a bus from my off-site hotel to Disney. Too pedestrian for me!!! If you want to save $$, you could do a moderate resort for most of your trip and then do the Poly for the last 3 nights.

If you must ignore my warning and stay off-site then I agree you should do the Poly last.

I'm staying at the Polynesian for the first time in December!! I'm requesting Fiji facing the marina or maybe Samoa. Is Samoa a smoking building? If so, I might request Tokelau. -Stephanie

There are, oh! (wistful sigh), so many wonderful reasons the Poly is one of the most expensive resorts on property; WHEN (not if) you stay there, you will totally get why. It's worth every penny, so go, and enjoy!:sunny:
