To kilt or not to kilt ......

..... that is the question (and not one I've seen posted yet!)

For our anniversary this year, I'm thinking of buying DH a full highland dress outfit (kilt in his clan tartan, sporran, jacket - the works) which is something he's always wanted.

Opportunities for wearing the outfit are few and far between (apart from Hogmany - or New Year's Eve for all you savages) however we're planning on doing the Western Magic in August and I wondered if this would be considered appropriate dress for formal night/Palos?

DH is no shrinking violet and would be up for wearing it and I think it would be wonderful for the formal portrait!

What do you think?

I would say go for it... a man in a kilt is a sight to behold :)

Remember that the guests and especially the crew are from all around the world. Although it will be "different," I'm sure it wouldn't be seen as "odd." It's not unusual for men of the British Isles (and of a certain heritage) to wear a kilt to a formal affair. Ohhh, but I see you're in England, so you already know this. My hubby is English. :)

On our October cruise, their was a family from England, I believe, that was dressed in traditional English clothing, wigs and all. Now, let me just say I THINK they were from England not sure but the dress was definitely different. Anyhow, I felt so bad for them because other cruisers thought they were part of the crew dressed up to take pictures with the passengers. You could tell they were starting to be bothered by folks wanting to take pictures of/with them.

If your DH doesn't mind the possiblity...by all means do it.

Knowing my DH, he'd lap up the attention, play to the crowd then invoice Disney for his services!

On our September Cruise, "Ducky" Williams, one of Disney's most prolific illustrators was onboard. Both he and his friend wore kilts for the formal occassions.

I say go for it.

Do the kilt! You cannot get more formal than that!!! Just be sure to get the correct clan tartan.

Oh ABSOLUTELY! :) We saw a family in kilts in December (the little 3-year-old son had one on too) and they looked wonderful! Go for it.

I think it would be fine! On our cruise we saw two little boys with ones on and they were taking a family pic. with them! Have fun on your cruise!

Regina~ we must have been on the SAME cruise 9/29 Magic ... I was about to post about Ducky! He was AWESOME and I do remember him and his kilt!

I say go for it! It neat to see different cultures!!! :) Have great cruise!

At one of our recent festivals in the small tourist town I have a shop in we had a bagpiper in the full dress, kilt and all and I for one love to see them. I vote for going for the kilt ! Happy sailing:p

Go for it! Just remember it can get quite windy up on deck.:earseek:

For goodness sakes, do the kilt!
Don Williams was the guest speaker on our 7-day cruise last year, and he wore a kilt for both formal nights. It was great.

Thanks, everyone! DH has now chosen out the outfit and it looks wonderful! Kilt, Prince Charlie jacket and vest, sporran, dress shirt and bow tie, hose and ghillie brogues (most of which will mean nothing to most of you but, trust me, it'll be fabulous!).

Guess we won't need the lime green ribbons on our cruise!

Only wish I had DS's to dress up too - unfortunately our DD (10) was born in England and seems not too impressed with her Scottish heritage - more Britney Spears than Flower of Scotland!

Flyrfan - will definitely be in the correct clan tartan. We have our own distinctive clan and not an affiliate - we've checked! (The funny thing about expatriate Scots is that the further away from home they go, the more Scottish they get! Even though we only defected to England!)

Gillian - Fighting off women?!?!? I'd pay good money to see that. LOL!!!!!!!

Credit Man - I have taken the wind on deck into account! Either DH goes back to the cabin to change after dinner or he forfeits his right to be a "true Scotsman"!

Roll on Aug 31st!

Good Grief...Go For It!!! I am looking foreward to seeing all sorts of new things, including other's proper dress. If everyone worldwide dressed the way we do at home, there would be no reason to get out and travel!!
