To Infinity and Beyond - Becoming a Better DopeyBadger (Comments Welcome)

Haha your kid is too cute!! You did say healing was your specialty, so I know you'll come back stronger! Also, if your going to get injured you picked the perfect time :-)

Thanks! I do believe healing and injury avoidance have been things I've been good at and this new obstacle will just be a new test for me. And agreed, there really couldn't have been a better time to take some extra rest days if necessary. There is no pressure for running the Dopey and as I have said from the beginning when running Dopey: "If I'm healthy, then I'll go all out. But if I'm injured, what better place to enjoy a nice easy race then Disney with its sights, sounds, character stops. The things I tend not to gravitate towards when normally running Disney would then change to become my main focus. Having that option of RACE or DO DISNEY is one of the big reasons why I enjoy WDW marathon weekend so much."

Well, that's good news a fracture didn't show up. Does it feel any better today? I would think if it was a fracture it would still hurt bad today but personally don't have a clue as never had fractures just muscle shin problems. And what kind of dog is in the picture above, cairn terrier?

Agreed! It definitely feels as if it is improving. Sunday after the race it was no walking without assistance, then about 10 hours later it was walking without assistance but in pain, then Monday it was walking with some pain, and then today has been walking with some pain but not as bad as yesterday.

We aren't entirely sure what type of dog Lucy is. We got her from a rescue and she was advertised as a ****-zu and Yorkie. But she has definitely outgrown that prediction. We're thinking some cairn terrier, ****-zu, and wiener dog but definitely nothing definitive.

I have cairns and agree definitely some cairn in there! Good on improving!! I have shin pain issues (muscle related not bone) and wearing a Zensah calf sleeve helps a lot, in case it is still nagging when you get back to training might be worth checking out.

Love the Zensah calf sleeve. I've been wearing it off and on the last few days to help, as well as icing and elevation. I definitely think it's made a difference.

If you need a resting and doing-nothing training plan, let me know. I can work up a nice excel spreadsheet. It may involve a lot of watching terrible bachelor-type shows, so may be a bit outside your comfort zone. I'm still trying to figure out how to do a blind-training session to make sure you activity level is as low as possible. Maybe we'll just call those "naps."

:lmao:

Just so happens that one of my favorite shows is "Dance Moms" which just came back with a new season. I actually got to eat dinner with Abby Lee Miller (the dance instructor) a few years back. A very interesting experience. Plus I've got "Real Housewives of Wherever?" to look forward to as well. So I've definitely got some terrible shows in my comfort zone. Let's see what you can come up with. :D

Hmm, what do you think about seeing a sports medicine specialist? Are they thinking about doing any further imaging?

Oh don't start me on Real Housewives! It's the (best) worst! My guilty pleasure and something my husband will (secretly) watch with me! In fact, I'll go to sleep in the middle of it and he'll stay up to finish it. But he'll deny it to anyone with his last breath!

Ok, First thing...I ammended your normal training days.
WU/CD = Wake up/Close Door and go back to sleep
EA = Eat Anything
EB = Eat Better, but only slightly than what you were eating when eating anything. So like only half a pizza.
LR = Long Rest
Tempo = Click the channel change button as fast as possible even though there are a lot of things on, don't let that distract you, keep clicking.
Strength = Maybe stand up, but just to go to the bathroom. (let's not get too crazy)
Speed = Try to keep up with the Running Thread during the morning when everyone is answering the QOTD

Tomorrow is Wed., so that is your first Medecine Ball workout. But we are going to change things up. Use the medicine ball as a foot rest and watch the Giants vs the Mets with your eyes closed. This is your first blind workout.
Thursday 10/5: Looks like there is a "90 Day Fiance" marathon on TLC in the morning. This should probably be your tempo day. Click between that and anything else.
Friday 10/6: Rest Day...let's not get crazy.
Sat 10/7: There's a new Vanderpump Rules. Make sure to fuel heavily before this one. Maybe one of those giant fritter things, but at least a half hour before the show.
I see there is an Iron Man (KONA!) on October 8th as well as the Chicago Marathon...so that's really what we will be working towards...not actually doing them...just watching them.

OK, I hope that is a good start.

Let me know how that looks so far and we can adjust as needed.

I'm going to take a wait and see approach. No more doctor appointments planned at the moment and they aren't planning any more images. The doctor said that if it doesn't improve in a few weeks that they'd do another x ray.

Oh I have NO IDEA what you mean about watching after someone else falls asleep...:rolleyes1

Nominated for post of the year. Really this is pure gold! I like how it looks and I'll make sure to keep you updated if I need to make adjustments.

Okay... I'll bite on this one. popcorn::

LOL! It was back when I use to travel for work a few years ago. I was in the New York airport waiting for my flight and I was having dinner by myself at a table for 4 in a restaurant. I ordered my food and then was just reading my phone. A random woman approached me and said there were no more tables available and wondered whether she could sit with me. I said no problem and she sat down diagonally to me. She ordered her food and then sat there reading a magazine. A few minutes later I heard and saw a very loud and boisterous woman out of the corner of my eyes. "No tables, what do you mean no tables? I want to eat at this restaurant." I couldn't tell who she was only that she was upset she couldn't eat there. And then I heard the sound of a table dragging across the floor. I could now see her and could tell it was Abby Lee Miller with her then boyfriend. She started dragging a table and chairs over from a different area of the airport over to the restaurant and was saying "see now there are enough tables. I'll eat here." But the staff informed her they wouldn't be able to serve them there because of fire code regulations on the size of their restaurant. She got even madder. So I looked at the random woman and asked her if she was fine if others joined us and she said yes. So I waved to Abby and told her she was welcome to join us at our table if she wanted. She came over and I moved to be directly across from the random woman. Abby thanked us sat down and began to order. She asked what I was having and said it was a salad with cranberries, but it was some other berry. So she scanned and scanned and couldn't find the cranberry salad. And said to me umm I can't find your cranberry salad and that's when I realized it was some other berry. Oh well. So she ordered from the server, but she wanted half of this dish, the side from this dish, the chicken cooked like this from that dish, essentially a make your own plate d-jour. The sever said she wasn't sure she could do that and Abby said "oh, don't worry you can." So then we sat there and Abby asked us how the woman and I knew each other. And I said I didn't know her either and she laughed, "oh so you just invite random strangers to your table for dinner." Yep, that's me. So the other woman asked Abby if she had a tv show. And Abby said, "No, I have TWO (finger gesture) tv shows." I thought to myself, now that's Abby Lee Miller. Guess she is exactly the same person either on tv or in person. I told her how I loved her show and had been watching since the beginning. She informed me that it was the season finale of the competition show and they were suppose to be in LA for the party but their flight was delayed. She asked me if I was such a big fan how I was missing it too, and I said work. I told her that I was happy to be able to get in her the restaurant since she seemed to be having a bad day and was missing the party. She thanked me and we just talked about the show, and her. Then I was finished with my meal and I stood up and said goodbye and left. I decided not to get a picture with her since she had no make-up on and seemed to already be having a bad day. It was a fun experience and she is exactly how she is on tv.

That is an amazing story. My wife and daughter will be happy I asked and got all of the details. They both watch the show and, because of that, I've obviously seen it. I'll have to relay this story to them.

Thanks!

That story is amazing! I can picture her judging you for not knowing the correct berry.
As a former dance teacher who would very actively dance literally the whole class to "show my students" what to do...My friend Jenna and I had on many occasions said that we should just become more like Abby Lee and just sit at the back shouting orders. Would save us from getting sweaty and tired.

She was TOTALLY judging me for not knowing the berry. That's totally her style, not sure it's the best one though.

This is both awesome and hilarious!!

I loved your comments about how different types of days can produce very different results in endurance running. I've had weeks when the short runs were brutal and the long runs were great and times where a run started off terribly, but improved greatly later on. That's why it's important to just keep going and build up the endurance.

Very glad to hear that there appears to be no stress fracture. Hopefully you keep getting better.

Kudos to @roxymama for the best "training" plan ever.

Agreed!

Thanks guys, I used a lot of "science" and "maths"

I'm just hoping a plan this aggressive doesn't cause any "under-use" injuries.

But on serious note: glad that there isn't an apparent fracture!

My wife loves the post. She thought it was hilarious.

Thanks! Almost pain free all day walking normally so I'm happy with the progress. More and more it appears to be a shin splint and not a fracture. But I'll continue to play it safe.

Fingers crossed that everything I'm doing is having a beneficial effect.

2016 Lakefront Marathon Prediction Contest: Winner!

I already told Heidi in person, but I thought I'd post it here as well. The winner of the prediction contest for my marathon was my sister-in-law Heidi. I sent her a $10 Amazon gift card! Congrats Heidi on being 1 min 17 second off from the actual time of 3:23:43. A solid guess! @opusone needed me to finish only 50 seconds faster, oh so close!

Prediction Contest

I had fun with this and definitely had each of your times in mind while I was running playing a little game as to who I thought would come out the winner mid-race. I'll definitely consider doing it again! Thanks again to everyone who played!

Well the good news is the radiologist also believes from reviewing the x-ray that there is no stress fracture (or at best unconfirmed). But unfortunately, the radiologist doesn't like the cloudiness on the x-ray near the area of the pain. They've decided to send me in for a MRI (not yet scheduled) to more accurately determine what the cloudiness is. It could be a x-ray image distortion, previous injury, calcium deposits, bone spurs, osteosarcoma (bone cancer), or a bone tumor (benign or malignant). It's too early to say anything, but I guess we'll take a wait and see approach. Guess the injury could end up being a blessing in disguise.
