To food-finity and beyond! Attention Star Command, dining reviews/photos ahead!

next up is Cape May Cafe dinner. green man grandpa wanted to book this one for the crab legs so we did. I'm not really much on buffets. I think the food is usually subpar and I get the hebegeebies thinking about germs that are spread all over creation by people all using the same utensils. But we went with a positive outlook. Hey, where else can you get crab legs at Disney on the dining plan?

Here are a few pics of the plates around the table from the dinner.

Here's the famous clam chowder:
IMG_3647.jpg

There really were a lot of large chunks of clams in this dish. The soup was pretty good. Didn't taste like the canned junk.

Here's a plate with shrimp, salad, and a cole slaw with cranberries. Cranberry slaw was great! salad was just a salad you could get anywhere. Shrimp was okay too.
IMG_3646.jpg

Here's Jesse's plate:
IMG_3648.jpg

She ate the potatoes and loved them. Everything else she just picked at and left most of.

Woody's plate. More potatoes and beef. He said the beef was dry and didn't eat but half of it. He did finish off the veggies though.
IMG_3650.jpg

Here's a pic of Wheezy's plate:
IMG_3651.jpg

IMG_3654.jpg

The crab legs honestly didn't look that good. He was trying to pull the meat out and couldn't get much. Usually you can pull the meat out easily if they are properly cooked. These just "flaked" and there wasn't much in them. The mini cupcake he said was good.

Assorted desserts:
IMG_3655.jpg
This was green man grandpa's sampler plate. He said the cheesecake was good, the chocolate thing was too rich and dry, the key lime tart was too much crust and you couldn't taste the filling, but he loved the peanut butter blondie. He said it was well cooked and tasted good. Figures! The one thing that tasted good my family had to stay away from due to the nuts!

Here's my problem with Cape May Cafe--The sitting area of the restraunt is HUGE. There are a lot of tables in that place packed with people. The buffet area is very small and in the shape of a small square. To get to the food on any 1 side of the square you had to get in a new line. The line didn't follow the square where you could start on one side and make your way around the square if you wanted to see the whole buffet. The lines were set up where you had people moving in the opposite direction of the line next to you so you physically had to get in 4 different lines to get to all of the choices. This kept me away from even trying to go through the whole buffet. It was crowded and it just wasn't worth the effort to me. I just stuck to the side of the buffet with the salad and soup. Everyone else braved all 4 lines! Another problem, they never had enough crab legs made to accomodate the crowd. When I looked up there there was none available. Green man grandpa said he went through the appropriate line for them and there was none there so he joined a line of customers waiting for them to come up (yes, a 5th line branching off of one of the original 4). When the crab legs came up grandpa said people in the line of people patiently waiting just for crab legs were fighting people who who were in the original line on the buffet for who had the right to get them. what a mess!

The buffet area was just too small for the crowd at this restraunt and the line strategy wasn't thought out well by the management. Crowd control wasn't being taken care of.

Take this all with a grain of salt: I told you from the beginning I wasn't a fan of buffets!

On the U.F.O. scale we gave Cape May Cafe an "O" for "only if it were the last place in the universe". We're not buffet fans anyway but the lines were congested, the layout made no sense, food wasn't readily available to customers, and most of the food we did get was only so-so. nothing stood out as really good.

We had dinner at CRT a couple years ago and out of 6 of us 5 enjoyed there meal but our waiter was wayyyy creepy! :scared1: after he spoke, every single time, he would lean over over and go... he he he and not in a peppy happy way either, like a deep drawn out way :sad2: It was the strangest thing ever!

we still talk about creepy waiter guy :rotfl:

I cant wait to try La Cantina, the pics looked yummy :goodvibes

Just something I thought i read at some point... I could be wrong.. But that would explain your petrified mashed potatoes...held too long in a warmer perhaps??
:confused3

Well there's the understatement of the century!:rotfl2:

I don't suppose you remember the waiter's name? Our waiter did the same thing! I wonder if they are all trained to "act" a certain way? Is it an expectation they pretend they are living in the past and act a bit "off"? We wouldn't classify our guy as creepy....just different. Definitely not normal though! whenever the introduction/story came over the intercomes for the princesses our waiter would sit there and say it too in unison as if he's heard it 10 million times (and he obviously has!) and wants to "be a part" of it.:rotfl2:

Oh my gosh your kidding! :rotfl: I dont remember his name but he was on the shorter side and a little chubby with brown hair...

At first we were all like "ok what the heck was that" then we started to giggle but by the end of the meal were we like "ok, ok he, he, he yeah whatever go away" lol
It went from strange to funny then creepy :sad2:

Okay, new day. We're at epcot and decided to eat sunshine seasons for the variety of food.

Woody and Jesse had rice, broccoli, and cashew chicken. Jesse had a cookie for dessert and Woody had the strawberry shortcake.

IMG_3701.jpg
IMG_3704.jpg

I tried the cashew chicken, rice, and noodles. I also had the strawberry shortcake for dessert.
IMG_3703.jpg

Wheezy had potato salad and a reuben sandwich.
IMG_3707.jpg

He liked the reuben sandwich, although I think he wouldn't have ordered it if he knew dressing was on it. He did not realize the potato salad was a cold potato salad. I think he was expecting roasted hot potatoes. He did not like them at all.

grandma and grandpa were with us. they ordered the reuben sandwich and cashew chicken too. they got key lime pie for dessert though.
IMG_3714.jpg

Here's the lowdown: The rice was wonderful. Everyone who got it loved it. The lomein I got tasted funny. It was just not what I was used to. I tried giving it away but noone wanted it! Grandpa ordered it too and he also skipped eating it. when we ordered the cook warned us that the cashew chicken was SPICY. we ignored him and got it anyway thinking, how bad could it be? um....REALLY BAD!!! Not bad tasting, just hot! There were so many huge chunks of red peppers in the dish it was really spicy. We picked out the peppers from Jesse and my plate since we're not much on spiciness but there was still a hotness left to the dish. Not overwhelming, but there. Woody actually at the peppers and all. I don't know how he did it!

The strawberry shortcake was delicious! Light and fluffy and not too sweet. I could have eaten that a few more times! Jesse's cookie was just a cookie. Could have gotten something similar from the grocery store. I do like the say all the m&m's are spaced facing up and so pretty though! I love the look of the little green men's key lime pie. The ones in the display cabinet were all perfect and looked like works of art. They ordered it and got one from behind the counter that looks like the white topping had melted like the wicked witch!:lmao: They said it was very good though.

Overall we rate Sunshine Seasons a "F" on the U.F.O. scale for "forgettable, but good. We love the variety of food choices here and will continue to come in the future. Next time we WILL listen to the cook tell us the cashew chicken is spicy though....

not the same guy then. ours was tall and a bit skinny. He was quite a character. Maybe these waiters went through character training before starting!

We chose Coral Reef for dinner. Never been there yet and we were looking forward to it. I told the lady at the counter we'd love a table by the tank and we were willing to wait for it. We were promptly seated 10 minutes later on the 2nd tier.:sad2: Oh well, you could still see the tanks just fine.

Now I hear a lot of talk about people letting their kids run wild here by letting them run up to the tanks inbetween unsuspecting diner's tables. I saw none of that and I was looking for it. The restraunt was packed and there were a lot of families with kids but everyone was seated and acting appropriately.

Our waitress was very friendly and prompt. She explained the menu choices and made sure we knew we could order strawberry or pina colada flavored smoothies for our drinks. We took her up on that.

Woody had steak with fries instead of potatoes since they came with a horseradish flavoring. He tried the key lime pie for dessert and a pina colada smoothy for a drink.
IMG_3777.jpg

IMG_3759.jpg

IMG_3790.jpg

He loved the steak. He said it was the best meal of the trip for him. Well cooked and tender. The pina colada drink was also well received by Woody. The key lime pie (yes it really is key lime pie. Doesn't look like it, but it is!) was not well received. The fruity chunks/sauce around the pie was absolutely overpowering and disgusting. I tried it thinking he was kidding but he wasn't. Its like a candied mix of mango, pineapple, and a lot of really strong spices of some sort. It was gross. The black dots are chocolate pieces that resembles caviar to me. Not in taste, just in looks. Overall a disappointing dessert.

Wheezy tried the lobster ravioli, strawberry smoothie, and creme brulee for dessert.
IMG_3775.jpg

IMG_3791.jpg

Poor Wheezy, this just wasn't his meal. He decided he didn't like the taste of lobster and he hated the sauce making this meal a bust for him. The creme brulee was tropical fruit flavored (mango more than anything) and he absolutely hated it. He ate nothing on this meal.

I had the mahi-mahi, strawberry smoothie, and creme brulee for dessert.
IMG_3780.jpg

The mahi-mahi was great! perfectly cooked! I enjoyed the jasmine rice too. Now there were some spices used that were a bit unusual and might be a turn off for some people. It was a bit strong. But I enjoyed it. The creme brulee, in my opinion, wasn't as bad as Wheezy thought. I didn't love the mango taste it had to it but it wasn't completely inedible. not my favorite though.

Jesse had pizza and ice cream for dessert.
IMG_3779.jpg

IMG_3789.jpg

IMG_3793.jpg

She didn't eat much at all. she spent more time decorating her ice cream than anything else!

Here's a roll from the roll basked. These things could double as hockey pucks. They were so hard it was funny.
IMG_3768.jpg

We had mixed reviews on this meal. It was Woody's favorite meal of the trip for the steak. I loved my mahi-mahi. Wheezy said it was the worst trip of the meal. He hated the lobster ravioli and the mango creme brulee.

We ended up giving the Coral Reef an "F" on U.F.O. scale. I really think if Wheezy had made any othe choice he would have been happy. The atmosphere was great! Most of the food was delicious! I wish the would revamp the menu for desserts though!

Walking through Germany we decided to get treats to take back to the hotel for the evening. We were gonna watch a movie on the lawn and thought we'd eat some caramel goodness from Germany while we did it. Unfortunately they were having technical difficulties with the movie so we kept the snacks for the following night hoping they would still be fresh. They were! That day didn't hurt them at all!

Woody got a traditional caramel apple:
IMG_3810.jpg

yummy! Woody loved it. He did admit, though, that the one from Goofy's he had earlier in the week was better.

Jesse chose a rice krispie treat with chocolate and caramel:
IMG_3808.jpg

As we suspected she ate about 3 bites and then quit. We saved it in the room for the next few days and then threw it out. It was good looking. I think it probably tasted great too. Just too overwhelming for a little one!

I chose a chocolate cookie covered with caramel:
IMG_3806.jpg

This was great. The cookie was soft and fresh tasting and the caramel was delicious! I'd eat this again in a heartbeat.

Wheezy didn't choose anything here and decided to look elsewhere later.

This was a big "U" on the U.F.O. scale. We will definitely be returning as these snacks were unforgettable!

Okay, since Wheezy didn't stop at the german caramel stop he want to the food court at POFQ and got a cinnamon roll for the movie. We also picked up a bag of chips the previous day that we decided to take to the movie.

IMG_3815.jpg
IMG_3813.jpg

The cinnamon roll looked good and Wheezy ate it all so I suppose it was! The chips were a disaster. Dangit, these prepackaged chips were the same ones that we've been haunted by all through the trip that we don't like. Thick, so crunch that your mouth hurts, and not very flavorful! We threw them out laughing at our bad "chip" luck.

I'll send you all the chips we get from now on.:goodvibes

How close do you live to Disney? You are so lucky to get to take so many trips!

Now thats a deal!

We live just 3 hours away and I love that, especially when DH has meetings in that area and we can make long weekends out of it.

Your report is just awesome, the kids are adorable and the food descriptions are super helpful

Keep up the great work woman!

Can I ask a stupid question??? Forgive my ignorance, but im Canadian. :lmao:
Can someone explain the biscuits & gravy? its not a dish i've ever come across where i grew up (and currently live in). Lol. .....is it just regular buscuits, with gravy all over it? Is it really good? I read so much about it and see so many pictures....everyone seems to love it. I was just curious.
I know, this is an incredibly stupid question :rotfl2: but I had to ask.
I'll have to give it a whirl on my next trip! :teeth:

Wow those tacos look great! Cant wait to try them in Sept, the cantina use to be DS fave before it changed so he will really enjoy this! I like the fact the beef isnt hamburger meat!

Im hoping Cape May wont be as bad in Sept..I booked it for the fried shrimp and crab legs. Ill probably ask the waitress if she can bring us some for the table and tip her well but I guess if I cant get them at Cape May Ill get them at Capt Grill the next night.

CRT looks horrible, I would have asked for a manager and had atleast part of the meal price reduced.. Im enjoying your reviews, getting hungry and missing WDW!

Great review. Thanks for taking the time to write one!

The gravy is a sausage milk gravy poured over what I would call buttermilk buscuits. I love it.

Kae

And wonderful Report. :)

Thanks, but I'm not upset by her comment anymore. Trust me, she has alterior motives other than concern for my family's diet.

I'm so sorry you had to cancel your trip! We've had do cancel trips before close to our arrival date and it really stinks! Just start planning for your future trip, even if you don't know the dates of it. Good things come to those who wait....and plan....and dream....and obsess!

It is okay. The economy took a huge hit on our Dh's income due to the face he was in sales. He was laid off two weeks before Christmas:scared1: I held on to our trip as long as I could, but there was no way we were going to go on a vacation while living on savings. He got a wonderful job, with great benefits, and job security in April, BUT he cannot take any vacation until next April. We wanted to go in May, but it just wasn't possible. We are hoping to go next May, but we will have to make sure Dh gets approved for vacation, and they don't do the vacation pool until November. I am excited. We normally go once a year, so maybe having to wait two years will make the trip extra special?

That is exactly what it is. biscuits split in half and then a gravy is poured over it. We don't make a point of eating them too often. It's a pretty greasy and rich meal. Usually the gravy is made out of either sausage, hamburger, or bacon grease. It tasted like sausage gravy was used at Disney.

I get where you're coming from! We were in a similar experience last summer. My DH and I are both teachers and our economy is so bad that they were cutting teachers in our state left and right the past few years. My DH lost his teaching job at the end of last year since he didn't have tenure in the district and we had to cancel our summer vacation. But God always opens another door when one closes! Luckily he had landed another job as college faculty and he loves it much more than the public school setting! Plus the benefits are MUCH better! When we took our vacation this year we celebrated by going a little longer than normal and we really were able to appreciate what a blessing it was after missing the year before! :flower3:
