I am a total newbie to the board AND to Disney World. :) My 6 DS and I will be traveling alone for our first trip to Disney World.
I live in East Central Alabama and driving to DW will take at least 9 hours. SO....... should I drive to Birmingham and take a flight to Orlando or just drive? I would have to drive part of one evening (maybe 6 hours??), spend the night somewhere, eat a few meals on the road, and then drive about 4 hours the next day and then arrive in Disney World.
It will cost us about $420 to fly (round trip).
Would I really need a car when I get there? All of my friends tell me that they never get back in their car again until time to go back home.
My brother has told me I would spend the same amount of time waiting in the airport, getting in Disney, etc... and doesn't seem to think I should do it.

Any advice!!?? :confused3
TIA!
PS.....Our trip is the Oct. 5 or 6-Oct. 11.

First,
WELCOME!:welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

I don't come from your area of the country, but I am a strong believer in flying, it just makes things so much easier for our family. Disney is wonderful with magical express pick up and drop off (if staying on property of course)and the ease of having planned ahead is simply worth it to us.
There are so many airline deals that I would seriously consider flying if you can afford to do it, especially a first trip with a child, and alone.
Whatever you decide, have a WONDERFUL time mak'n memories with your child!!! :wizard: pixie dust to you both!

I don't think you could drive for that amount. Don't forget to add in gas, hotel room, meals on the road etc.....

While I prefer to rent a car, in Disney you can get around using the Buses rather easily. Lots of people do.

I'd fly, if I was you.

I am from NE Alabama we drive an hour to BHM to fly out. I start watching airfare long before I go. I managed to get a non-stop flight on delta for my mom.DD and myself for 140pp RT!!

I know it's a lot of fun planning your first Disney trip with your little guy. I hope you're both excited about going!

I'm going to be different from the other responses that you've received, and I'd say that I would certainly consider driving.

I live in Atlanta, and we are also very familiar with Alabama. Several years ago, we started driving from Atlanta instead of flying to WDW for exactly the reason that your brother described.

For our family, we've come to the conclusion that for relatively short trips (as opposed to cross-country or international), it's almost not worth the hassles involved in flying. We're not afraid of flying. We, in fact, do enjoy the flying itself. We love that it allows us to visit places that we would not consider driving to.

Flying seems to take even more time and trouble now with the extra security requirements. I do realize that the Birmingham airport is a bit smaller than my home airport (Atlanta) and is much easier to navigate. So it probably doesn't take quite the chunk of time to fly out of Bham as it does out of Atlanta. But we've just decided that it is simpler and less stressful to go ahead and drive the 7 to 8 hrs from Atlanta. Packing is a whole lot easier and less restrictive. No security to deal with. You drive yourself directly door to door. You can decide how leisurely of a pace to take. Your car is probably a lot more comfortable than the airplane.

As far as driving from your area -- We have driven to WDW one time from Auburn. Not sure if you are anywhere close to there. But the drive was very easy -- and I'm thinking that it was between 7 and 8 hours. About 4 hours (maybe a little less) to Valdosta, and then seems like it's a bit over 3 hours from Valdosta to WDW. From Auburn -- Hwy 280 to Columbus -- then through Albany, GA -- hit I75 at Tifton -- Interstate the remainder of the way.

If you HATE to drive, then don't. But it could be a nice road trip for you and your son. You can take breaks whenever you want. You can take a bunch of Disney CDs -- build up excitement on the way. Maybe purchase a Park music CD while you are at WDW -- then listen to it on the way back and talk about all the things you loved doing at WDW. The drive really could enhance your trip.

Do you NEED a car at WDW? Probably not. It does allow you a lot of flexibility, if you want it. If you think that you will make more trips to WDW in the future, then it could be worth driving at least this one time. If, during your entire stay, you never had a desire or need to drive anywhere, then that will tell you that your family does not need a car. Or you may find that you were glad to have the car. Or you may find that you would be fine without the car, but maybe any future co-travelers would probably want it.

I believe that the drive is entirely doable in one day. But if that's too much for you, you could stop halfway in Valdosta. Or, you could probably easily make it to Gainesville or Ocala, and then be able to get to WDW mid-morning the next day.

I hope you and your son have a wonderful time together!

Welcome aboard! :cheer2:

We face the same question every time we go. We live about 30 miles north of the Alabama line in South Tennessee on I-65. We have driven and we have flown. I prefer to fly because I avoid the fatigue factor of driving, but I will drive if the cost savings are significant. If you drive, the car issue is a moot one, however if you fly, you may or may not need a car. Will you be going off site a lot to shop or visit other parks and/or attractions? If so, you will probably find a rental car more convenient than using taxis. If you are going to say onsite and don't plan on a lot of shopping offsite (and use grocery delivery), you really don't need a rental car. You can hire a Limo or towncar for far less than a rental car (in most cases) or use the DME for free. Even if you use a taxi once or twice during your stay, you will still save more than what a rental car would cost. As to flying though, for $425 rt I would fly. From Nashville I am looking at about $900 rt for the three of us. That makes driving look more appealing.

We always drove when we lived in Atlanta. We were going to drive from our home in Texas for our September visit. But, even if we plan on driving, I always watch airfare. I figure out what it would cost us to drive (we need a hotel each way) and if I find airfare cheaper than that, I snag it. I came within $20 of our driving budget on airfare for September, so now we are flying!
Have you considered checking airfare out of Hartsfield in Atlanta? My sister just snagged an Airtran sale for ATL-MCO for about $140 roundtrip, taxes & fees included. You might consider a little bit of both. We used to drive to Birmingham to snag super deals from Southwest.
Good luck:thumbsup2

Flying is the only way to go for us! But we live near Cleveland, Ohio.

We drove for the first time this last Christmas - never again!

A 9 hour drive can turn into a 15 hour drive! I dont know how but sometimes it just happens...lol (to some of us):confused3

We planned on a 16 hour drive. by the time we hit Fl we were all so tired we HAD to stop and sleep a few hours.
That ended up being a 26 hour drive from Cleveland Ohio to Orlando Fl!!

A lot of people have drove that route much faster than us!

I hate to fly. Really Really hate it!! I have to get adivan from my doc when I fly.

Remember to that YOU will be the only one driving, while 9 hrs isn't that long you will be tired and a lot more tired than your 6 yr old who will have slept, rested and be ready to go when you get there and you'll need a break. If you plan on driving and staying over that is a night you could have been in Disney and ready to go in the AM even if you get in late from flying you will be checked in and ready to go in the morning where with driving you will only be checking in and getting settled, same thing on the return.
