To camera or not to camera

We are going to the parks in a few weeks and will be with a 7 and 2 year old. I have a problem taking pictures of everything and on our last cruise with them, I was still able to get some use out of having the camera along for the ride with characters, fireworks, and close interactions. But with none of that in the parks upcoming and having a good camera on my phone, is this the trip that you say leave it at the house and don't even pack it? It is just one more thing that takes up space and with multiple lenses, filters, accessories, it is a hassle. I am leaning toward leaving it at home, but wanted the gurus thoughts.

Depends on what you want to do with the photos imo. Facebook / Instagram? Phone. Going to be printing and hanging them? SLR, hands down. Also, if you can jump for it Photo Pass is pretty worth it. Disney shoots high end Nikon systems, not like most tourist traps where you pay 100+ for a picture taken on a point and shoot from 2006. Keep in mind that masks have to stay on for Photo Pass photos, though.

We used to haul the camera and video camera with us on every trip. We now use our cell phones and a Go Pro. Lots easier to deal with.

If I know I'm taking some shots that my phone can't handle, like trying to take some very wide angle or some telephoto shots, then I'll bring my SLR and the lenses I want. During Marathon Weekend, because a lot of stuff happens very early in the morning, I'll carry a couple f/2.8 and f/2 lenses.

But on a normal "I'm going to Disney" trip, I'll leave the camera at home, and just take everything with my phone.

I would leave it. Many of the shots you would take would involve masks, and nobody wants to remember this time. At the very most, I would use your phone and print through free prints.

In the past, I have always brought my SLR. But with the shows closed, I'm not sure it would get used much on the next trip.
However, I always bring a small backpack with me, so having the camera in the backpack is not a big deal. Without the backpack, I think I'd leave it and just use the phone.

We are hauling ours, with the tripod, 3 lenses, and doubler. However, we just got a new lens and backpack. Plus, I have a couple of days by myself to be a camera nerd. Finally, really getting back into it.

As a photography teacher, I spit on camera phones (metaphorically, of course). Consider than your choices aren't limited to cell phone or SLR. My thoughts:

- I'd go with a point-and-shoot -- not a twelve-year old's $59 point-and-shoot, but a GOOD point-and-shoot; personally, I'm a fan of the Canon Power Shot. It's better quality than a cell phone camera, yet it's more portable than an SLR.
- An SLR's real benefits are shutter speed and zoom, which would make sense if you were photographing soccer, but at Disney you're photographing people.
- Whatever camera you take, don't neglect good composition and knowledge of your camera's features. I promise, I can take better pictures with a point-and-shoot than an average person using an SLR's auto-focus.
- I do agree that this isn't the ideal time to get the best pictures -- you know, what with masks and all.

Its a personal choice. I would not rely on a phone camera as my main camera, but you can if it meets your needs. If you start leaving your camera gear behind, it may be time to consider an update. Consider smaller and lighter gear, like a mirrorless digital which is half the size and weight. I typically go to Disney with my core DSLR (don't bring every lens), a small mirrorless and my phone camera. Based upon the day, I either take the DSLR or the mirrorless. I also have multiple methods in carrying the cameras to be aligned to getting off/on rides, etc.

I got a Sony RX100 - nice quality point and shoot - specifically to take to the parks. The little soft case on a carabiner hangs on my beltloop or fits in my pocket for rides. The photos are noticeably better than than my phone, especially at night.

I always used to bring the big camera and lenses all the time to the parks during all our trips - but recently, I've found I just bring the phone and get pictures that I'm happy enough with. As others have said, if you want to be able to print the pictures, then bring the camera, if not, then it may not be worth the weight for you. We do usually travel with the camera, regardless, but really only bring it to the parks when there's something specific I want to photograph.

There are still plenty of memorable moments to photograph. But there also are many special inserts that the Photopass team creates for magical memories. I always go to the DisneySprings location or the MK Photo Store on Main Street... they usually have a special treat if you purchase just a small package and includes a holiday decorated Cardboard album to insert photos.
I wanted to video every Halloween cavalcade because , well , just in case... I will return for the holidays and look forward to the cavalcade even more!
Also your children will want a memory to appreciate the good times.
I say Photopass and cellphone.
And don’t forget to share a few for trip report!

nobody wants to remember this time
This made me chuckle. My daughter and I returned from a whirlwind tour of Greece last week and we have a disproportionate amount of shots of my daughter looking dreamily out into the distance.... in other words her back😂.

If you have to wear masks when you go, I wouldn't bother lugging your camera. Just enjoy your time with your family and you can always take photos with your phone.
