To book or to wait...

Ive read the general thought is that opening day prices are the best price you will see. Have other experienced better savings by waiting? Also, what are the penalties if any for booking now and changing your mind? If you weren't to the paid in full day, could you cancel and change?

Prices almost always go up not down, unless you are waiting until the very last minute to book. Your deposit is refundable (except for concierge) so if you change your mind you would get it back.

The last minute restricted fare that DCL offers on cruises that the deem as not selling well, typically, are still higher than opening day prices. On occasion they have been lower (not a lot, but lower). But, I wouldn't count on that happening much.

And those fares are not offered on all cruises.

If you put a deposit down now, and cancel before the Paid in Full date, you'll get your money back, unless you booked Concierge. Concierge deposits are non-refundable, but you can usually transfer them to another cruise.

you have until the PIF date (I think it's 90 days before sail) to change it or cancel. Prices will only go up.

I think the price increases depend upon the cruise. You can use the following site to track fares. It seems Western Caribbean, and possibly Eastern, don't have the same early spikes like other itineraries. They eventually start to jump about 100 days out.

I hadn't seen that tracker before. If you look at the *GT rates during off peak times, I think you will see that the rates can be lower than opening day prices.

If you are flexible with your dates and are thinking of doing a more typical cruise (like an Eastern or Western Caribbean), you may get a last minute deal. You could always book the opening day price and as you get closer to the PIF date, see how well the cruise is selling. If there are many rooms available, you could cancel and take the chance that the rate would go down. I would only do this if you wouldn't mind if the discount doesn't happen.

I'd like to do the double dip cc cruises. The prices seem so high. I need to look back at our first 7 day cruise on the fantasy. We cruised in September and I know it was a lot less than the 5 night double dip. It it what it is though.

I've seen this a bunch recently...what exactly is a "double dip"?
