To ask or not to ask for an upgrade? Advice please

The difference is it a common practice in other hotels across the world, but at Disney World, it is a practice that will not get you the results you hope for.

Pretty much as others have said, if you ask for it, they will not give you one, even if you were marked to receive a courtesy one.

So at Disney World, don't ask unless you are wanting to pay the difference. :thumbsup2

As to the question about why Disney builds the resorts they do, they build what the market will support. If they see a financial advantage to them to build rooms that sleep 5 they will do it.

Let me be clear, before anyone puts more words in my mouth I didn't say. It is always, to make sure it's clear I'll repeat, always ok to ask for an upgrade at any hotel, Disney or otherwise. And it may surprise people, but the best way to get a free one is to start off saying you are willing to pay. It's actually a good business rule in many hotels to give it free as an extra surprise. We do it frequently. Of course in the hopes that the good will will lead to more business for us down the road.

But don't ask for a free one. Just trust someone in the business, there are solid reasons for that and yep it's about the bad apples who have spoiled that feature like that small percentage of bad apples that ruin so many things for everyone else.

So OP, absolutely ask for an upgrade and make it clear that you are willing to pay. You will actually increase your chance of getting a free one if it's available. My advice was just to help you make the request to your best advantage. Hope it works out for you.

I would just like to thank all of the CM's that take the time to read these boards and help to answer all of our questions.

To me this seem like going above and beyond the call of duty, to reach out to customers of WDW on their own time to help. The information they provide is invaluable and I for one appreciate their honesty in telling it like it is.

I also appreciate the original poster's query. Understanding how things work at Disney helps us all to experience the best trip possible, with reasonable expectations and a knowledge of what we need to do to experience the trip we desire.

Thank you!

It is common practice to give upgrades across the globe, its good business sense. Its a form of marketing.

Disney is no different in that they do give upgrades just the same but not to those that ask because that wouldn't be as magical. Its good business sense for them to keep them as 'pixie dust'

To the OP - sorry you needed your flame suit :flower3:

sammie,. I think the boards are kinda messed up, and the couple of posts referrring to resorts only fitting 4 people were "misplaced" from another thread.

I kinda love the merry mix-ups that occur when that happens.... "when thread posts get mismatched, film at 11":rotfl:

What about of you have preferred room booked on the first reservatio and have a continuing reservation with a standard?
We are booked first night at POFQ with an interline rate, only garden view was available. Next day we need to officially check out/in to our package and there we have a standard room.
I was told to ask to keep the original room ( therefore asking for an upgrade for our standard package room). To be honest I could care about the view, its more we dont want to change rooms.
Should I ask or assume they will try anything regardsless if it means an upgrade to keep us in the orginal room?

They won't necessarily. I know one year because of how the AP discounts fell and what was available, I had to book a King room at CSR for one night, before the AP discount kicked in the next night for a standard room. I didn't necessarily want the King room, but that's all that was available for that one night. I had to book it as two reservations of course and asked that they be linked. When I checked in, I again asked to stay in the same room for the entire trip and told them I would not have a problem with them moving me to a standard room that first night if it would help. The CM told me they had to put me in the King room for that one night and couldn't guarantee anything and to just ask when I came back over in the morning to recheck in for the second reservation. Sure enough, they told me I had to switch rooms. I know MissyTara who posts here on the DIS has also posted that she had to change rooms over at PORS once.

thank you for all the responses! sorry it caused some disagreements. I thank you for all the advice. :)

No need to apologize, I found it entertaining how a simple question can turn into a soap opera:lmao: The only thing I do is to try and see their name tag before I get to their window and then greet them by name and start up a dialog. I hope you have a magical time.
