Just read off WDWIG that ALL of WDW will be non-smoking.
That includes all enclosed areas such as resort lobbies, resort LOUNGES, and most of Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island.

There will still be outer smoker areas at the resorts. It stated that a Florida state law was passed July 1st regarding enclosed smoking areas.

I called and confirmed this at POR. There are still a limited number of smoking rooms that will be available.

Example..at POR there will be designated smoking areas OUTSIDE by the Marina / Boat dock area by the main entrance near Boatwrights.

does that mean people can't walk around MK, etc, smoking, ignoring the signs pointing to the smoking areas? Or is it just ROOMS & Restaurants??

Jeanny

Yes, they did indeed pass new laws in FL as of July 1 about where smoking is and is not allowed.

I'm not sure of all the details but there have been several articles in the FL newspapers we look at.

I just wish that Disney would be a little more vigilant about dealing with the people who smoke in the parks. It seems to be the worst in Epcot near Mexico/Norway. I think that people smoke here because the cast members (students from other countries) are not eager to tell people NOT to smoke. As for the "limited number of smoking rooms, does this mean there will be fewer than there are now? The next time I request a non-smoking room, I had better not get one of the "old smoking rooms" ... unless they are going to replace everything in the room from carpets to mattresses. You just don't get that smell out of a room that has been previously smoked in.

Good point about old smoking rooms. I don't want to start a debate about this, my preference is always nonsmoking rooms and I have trouble with the smoking smell as well.

hi all,

regarding old smoking rooms, we stayed at wl in may and had 5th floor southwing which was smoking optional only a month before, then they changed it to nonsmoking.

my dh was having a fit thinking the room was going to smell. we were very surprised. they had completely changed out the room from the bed, to the bedding, to the carpet. we never even knew it used to be smoking. everything smelled fresh. hope this helps.

also, to all, i have been reading alot of posts regarding smoking in the parks, etc. and how it has become bad. and that the cm's do not enforce this. i was going to write disney a letter or email about this, and maybe if all who feel this way also write and email they might do something. just a thought, don't want to start anything. :D

As Kallison said I could not find this "new" info on Deb's site. Will the OP please point us to where on the site this can be found? I'd like to see it for myself.

I actually had the exact opposite experience while at the parks in March. Anytime I saw a person smoking outside a designated area, a CM would immediately swoop in out of no where and kindly ask them to move to a smoking area.

Most of the time though people were swarmed around the designated areas, we didn't see that many smoking where they weren't supposed to and when they were they'd usually apologized and stopped when ask to by a CM. Sure there were a few rude people that ignored the CM"s but rude people come in all forms. Like the people, not smoking, who would walk through a smoking area and pitch a fit about all the smoke. They would make this huge scene ranting and raving about how smoking shouldn't be allowed anywhere, coughing and hacking, it was very strange.

While I hate smoking with a passion, I wouldn't walk through a smoking area and then rant about it, that's just rude.

We get the WDWIG newsletter...I do not believe that you can read this newsletter if you are not a subscriber.
They do have "archive" issues, but this issue was published this week so it is not an archive just yet.....if you can bear with my typing..I will re-type the portion of Debs article that states this...here goes.......

"As of July 1st, the Florida Indoor Clean Air Act dictates that all enclosed workplaces must be nonsmoking. For the Walt Disney Wrold Resort, this will include resort lobbies, convention spaces, clubs at Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island, resort lounges and the formerly way-too-smokey Atlantic Dance at the Boardwalk. All Ears hears that Jellyrolls will remain a smoking establishment."

Thats it...word for word...punctuation for punctuation.

As I said in my OP...I called and verified this with POR . All they said was that there is smoking allowed in outdoors areas. Such as the Marina Area and others. They said there was still going to be smoking rooms available.

I did not ask if they were eliminating or adding smoking rooms.

As I understand the new law, a bar that makes 10% or less of its revenue from food is exempt from the smoking ban. If that is true, (please correct me if I'm wrong) is the River Roost allowing smoking? I was hoping to see Bob without the cloud of smoke next time.

Palmtreegirl--

I saw the same thing, people standing in areas clearly marked as somking making a stink. Helloooo...there are ashtrays there...I don't see how anyone could have missed it.

I'm an avid non-smoker. I watched my three pack a day dad die of cancer. But I also feel that it's an adults right to smoke as long as it doesn't affect me (although I also think they should pay substantially higher health insurance costs, but that's another thread).

If I'm stupid enough to walk into a smoking area, I'm certainly not going to complain about it.

I will very vocally and in multiple languages complain about people smoking in non-smoking areas though.

I'm almost afraid to ask...has anyone heard about smoking on balconies when staying in a non smoking room?? I hope they crack down on that.

Ducklite...
I have STRONGLY disagreed with you on another thread we won't mention....BUT I am 100% in agreement with you on your comments.....here...here..!!!!

EpcotBill

I called POR directly...they said "smoking is NOT allowed in the River Roost."...I am looking forward to it. After spending so many hours enjoying BOB...I feel like I MYSELF actually smoked a pack.

Mrs. A
Maybe I am wrong...but I thought I can remember seeing ashtrays on some of the balconies. I did not ask if they were taking them away.

I think the phrase to remember is "indoor establishments."

It's funny, I'm a smoker and I'm thrilled about this change. I hate "indoor" smoke, the smell sticks to everything and makes a place dingy and dirty looking. I also hope they really do start enforcing the smoking sections at the parks better. I watched one kid almost get burned by an inconsiderate jerk last trip. Of course I almost smacked the lady who walked through the smoking section complaining and coughing too. Rudeness goes both ways...

I also get Deb's newsletter and saw this article this week. I am very anti-smoking as I continue to watch my mother die from smoking illnesses each day. This is a habit that I've never understood and appaud anyone who is able to kick the habit because I believe it is probably one of the hardest things anyone can do. I could go into a big speech about why smokers don't care about the loves ones they leave behind, but this is not the forum for it. I'm glad to see things change in regard to the inside places. I love Dixie Landing and it will be nice to sit at the lounge and have a drink without having an allergic reaction to the smoke. Of course, with allergies I ALWAYS have a guaranteed non-smoking room. I do, however, respect the areas designated for the smokers and when I've accidently walked through, not realizing it, it was me kicking myself for being stupid for doing that. I'm happy to see that places are designated for smokers and even happier to see that they are often shaded and places to sit available. I'm always pleased to see that folks are utilizing this location.

Does anyone know if smoking outside at the resorts will be restricted? My husband usually smokes a cigar when he is sitting by the pool with a drink. I noticed that the new law pertains to enclosed places, so I am assuming outdoors you can still smoke where you like-except at the parks of course.

I am a smoker and my last trip was december 2001
I dont remember ever smoking in the lobbies before.

Generally if an ashtray is not around, I smoke outside
or in the room.

The only change I can see is that there wont be smoking in the lounges.

I personally like the way Disney has their designated smoking areas. After about 2hrs I would seek one out and stop for a
rest and smoke.

I was in an amusement park last summer in Ohio and you
were allowed to smoke anywhere outside. I found myself
looking for places off the beaten path to stop and smoke.

Disney has done a nice job of providing areas for smokers to use where we know we will be less annoying to others.

I live in WV and our state too has passed this same bill as to where one can and can't smoke. I am a non smoker and glad they have passed such a law here and in FL. I do not like to go into a restaurant to eat in the non smoking section and there is always some smoke that escapes from the smoking section. I agree with the statement above that if you walk into a smoking section, one has no right to complain. That's just my two cents.

I love it. Thank goodness. Obviously I'm a non-smoker but I couldn't be selfishly more thrilled. I live in a tobacco town, Winston-Salem, NC and it makes me crazy to go to restaurants, grocery stores, etc. I think people have the right to smoke, but I have the same right NOT TO. Shouldn't have to deal with it on my vacation.

thank you Florida!
