On our last trip we really enjoyed the convenience of having our room keys act as park tix. Am I to understand that the only way to have this benefit is to buy UPHs?

Also, could you tell me about the actual PHPs? Are they pretty durable?

Yes and no.

If you want to purchase your tickets in advance, yes. Ultimate Park Hoppers are the only type that can be encoded on to your room key.

However, anything that you purchase at check in can be encoded onto your room key. The catch to this is that you won't get advance purchase discounts.

Any admission media except for: those encoded onto room keys, and Park Hopper and Park Hopper Plus passes bought at the Disney Store are printed on mylar. It looks kind of like a flimsy carboard, but it is EXTREMELY durable. When you've finished using one - try to tear it in half. I dare you. :)

We always get APs and they get a couple of trips every year. We have never had one tear or wear out.
