TIW(DDE) card now $75

I have a slightly different question. Is there a list that compares the list of places you can use the card to the list of places with DVC discounts. If the places are the same, then it's only an additional 10% discount.

$75 is 20% of $375. So unless my brain isn't working right, after you spend on $375 of undiscounted food, you have broken even.

They total the bill, they take the 20% discount, then they charge the 18% tip. So, you actually break even sooner than $375, assuming you don't tip more.

Example:
The card costs $75.
With TIW, Your total cost for a $100 meal is $94.40
Without TIW, A $100 meal plus 18% tip = $118 (assuming you don't choose to tip less)
So, for every $100 meal total, you are actually saving $23.60
You break even at $318.:rolleyes1

We are a large family, and making 3 trips this year, so we will save a lot of money! (and, we bought the card in January for $60!)

Hmm...isn't the tip supposed to be based on the undiscounted amount? After all, the tip is an incentive to the server. If the server would get less tip because you have a discount card, they are less inclined to provide the same level of service as someone who is not using the discount.

The CM did mention the fee if you lose it is $50 for a replacement....now that is because I think people did abuse that, saying they lost a card and then getting a new one...now they have 2 without paying for the second card....so I can understand that....I just sure hope I don't lose it...oh they are back to a junkie looking paper cards too and they have no AP holders so you could keep them together in that .
Oh and I just got an email from TGIFridays and they have 10 9.99 entrees, theyare not raising prices and there is one in the Crossroads Shopping plaza right down from DTD.
You can use the card for counter service in AK, and at Port Orleans food court too and AP at SSR.

I just bought the TIW through the mail and it is plastic like a credit card, not "junkie looking paper card."

Park tickets and apparently TiW cards ordered and sent via mail are of the plastic type. I'm guessing they stand up better in the mail. Even AP vouchers, which need to be turned in and activated, are plastic cards.

Tickets and TiW cards obtained at ticket booths/guest relations are on Tyvek card stock (not paper, although it looks like paper). It actually stand up better than the plastic cards in a lot of situations (such as demagnetizing). I believe the costs on producing them are a lot cheaper too, both for the stock and the equipment to print on them (fairly standard printer vs. special card printer).

But with reasonable care they stand up quite well. If they didn't, they wouldn't be using them for long term items like APs and TiW.

It would be nice and simple of Disney just came out and said Annual Pass holders and DVC members get a straight 10% off all meals across the board by showing their cards.
I live by a simple principal: I do not pay for discount "priviledges".
I used to be asked at my local video store if I wanted to purchase a special rewards membership for $10 where I would get a free movie after every 3rd rental. My response was always the same: Why charge me $10? Why not just "reward" me with the free rental? What is the $10 fee for?
I feel the same way with a certain large chain bookstore. They charge $25 for a "membership" to get a discount on future purchases.
What is the fee going towards?
Either give me a discount or don't. Don't ask me to pay for getting it.

The fee is because they can. The question is whether you will benefit from the program. Myself and DW benefit from the B&N discount you are referring to because we purchase many books and magazines there a year. However, we do not benefit from your BV example because there "rewards" program does not allow you to rent new releases, just the old movies. I often walked around trying to find a movie to rent just to make use of the program and could not even find a free movie I wanted to watch.

Every person decides if it is worth the money? Why make it a question of principle. That is silly.

We are DINKs and eating at nice restaurants at Disney is one of the reasons we go there every year. We can earn back that $75 fee in 2 days. Since the expiration clock doesn't start ticking until you pick up the card, we get two years vacations worth for one years purchase.

Many families do not dine the way we do and the DDP makes more sense for them.

Now, with the spouse card at $50 dollars, I do not know if it will be worth it to purchase that anymore. We always eat together, so that is just flushing the money down the drain.

The DVC discount is offered at only a few restaurants & does not include alcohol & for those that like adult beverages (like me) the savings can be substantial with the TIW card. Here is a 2008 comparison from allears:

I was going to post the same link :)

It is not 100% accurate as of late - for instance, Artist's Palette does not list a discount but I understand TIW is good there.

You can see that DVC and AP alone don't have many discounts by themselves, and often that are for places that are NOT included in TIW, or at least are smaller discounts. Of course, if DVC offered all the same discounts, there would be less incentives for us to spend the money to get both the AP and the TIW card...

Thanks allshookup and doconeill for the link and info!

the dvc dinning discounts have changed a little from her list

here is the site
http://dvc.disney.go.com/dvc/member/perk/memberPerkOverview?id=WDWDiningPage

now if the link does not work - just go to the dvcmember site - log on

member privileges
then
member perks
then
Wdw
then
dinning

was going to do my own list - but didn't because of the list on Deb's site. - might be time again.

I was thinking of trying to condense the discounts into something more pocket-sized...probably need to use "codes" for the names of the restaurants to do it.

Not sure when I'll have time. Got a lot of other things I want to get done...

DARN it!!!:headache:

No, it certainly doesn't take long to spend that much on food at WDW but it has to be spent at a restaurant that takes the card which takes a bit of planning and leaves several places out. THAT is what's hard for us to do. I WAS planning to go ahead & get the card on our trip in May so we could use it through 3 trips. But as a family of 3 who doesn't always, always do TS it took us about 8-9 days to recover the old $60 fee. Now we would be hard pressed to ever get the $75 back. For our May trip which is a quick 4 nights, I have only booked 2 TS meals - and neither place takes the TIW card (T-Rex and Wolfgang Puck Cafe, both in DTD). I don't know if Artist Palette at SSR takes it (probably not, right) but so that means the only time we may get a chance to use it would be for a CS meal at AK for this trip. So we would be looking at like a whopping $5-10 savings over the entire 4 days. We would use it more for our 10 n trip to BCV & VB in August...but it's not looking like such a hot idea for us any more. We may just try to be sure to eat at more places where we can get the DVC or AP discount like the 2 ressies we have in May.

(I wish Allears would update their comparison chart for the 3 diff. plans.)

(PS) Anybody know if VB offers a DVC discount for meals??

Artists Pallate DOES take TIW. DH and I didn't figure that out until our second day, after we bought our mug, but oh well. We know it for our next trip now! I also never knew you could use it at the AK restaurants. I'm sure we've missed out on at least another $20 in savings over 3 trips on our card so far just with all the places we didn't know we could use it. We got it because we had our wedding at WDW last spring and saved a few hundred dollars with it just on our wedding dinner, but we find it a good savings anyway. We're 6 weeks out from our 4th trip on it, so we've done well. I'll have to see the next time we go - not sure we'd have purchased it again at $60 or $75.

knew it took the TIW - but they say there was no discount for the mugs and refused me.

so nice to know the discount can now be used at Artist Pallet for the mugs. Is it the new mug -
red ones? or the same old mug that they used last year.

We purchased the TiW card in December for a four day trip and managed to get our money's worth already (a couple of bottles of wine helped that!). We have trips planned for the end of April and August so we're happy tht we have TiW this year.
A previous poster mentioned a TiW card for her husband because they usually eat together. Perhaps she doesn't know that the TiW discount is good for up to 10 people who are eating together.

Spiceycat, I am OP and used the TWI card at AP for the new red mug and got the 20% discount...It might depend on the CM althought and they have to try...the CM wasn't sure but tried and it gave a discount...I think the mug was 12.99 and 20% off that....the CM also said could use at any resort refill station??? I have seen many people filling the old blue mugs too. Couples will have 1 blue and 1 red!!!!
and as to the person who thinks a couple needs 2 card no you only need one if you are together...it is just if you want one and maybe don't always dine together or go to Disney together.

So, out of principle you choose to pay more?

If you pay $25 for B&N's discount program, you get at least 10% off almost all purchases. If you spend $250 in B&N annually and don't take advantage of the program, you aren't punishing B&N, you are actually helping them by increasing their profit margins on your purchases. So your principle, helps them and hurts you....

Rewards programs are designed to have those who do not take advantage of the program to pay for those who do. In the end, they generally return more foot traffic into that retailer's locations, which in turn increases year over year sales, which is how Wall Street generally gauges the success of retail establishments.

In this case, TIW is still saves money for those who spend over $375 on food/beverage at the restaurants covered by TIW. To not purchase it if you are already going to do that is pure fiscal waste.

Are they asking if you have the TIW card? I thought they only asked if you had the DDP. DW is pretty certain that they did not ask about the TIW card when she last called. If you call for a prepaid meal like CRT, I've said that I will have the TIW card so they do not charge me full in advance. Instead they treated it like I was was planning on having the DDP so they didn't charge in advance (they do still take the credit card for a cancellation charge), but I was able to pay at the table.

I need to call tomorrow, I'll to remember to report back here.

'Ohana is getting to be pretty popular. 50 days is well within the 90 day calling window. I don't think having TIW had anything to do with it.

Doc
I dont remember that they specifically asked if I had TIW.I think the way it was phrased was " Do you have DDP or any other plan" or words to that effect. Be interested to hear back from you

I couldn't remember what thread I said I'd post back on... :)

I called yesterday. They didn't ask at ALL about dining plans. Because the new system takes your reservation number if you are staying on site they may have been able to see that I didn't have the dining plan at that point, but they didn't ask anything else about dining plans or discounts.

Their wording is confusing (and I think I remember it from last year), but I don't think TiW counts as a "plan" - its just a discount card.

Thanks Doc TIW is still a major break Maybe the new system wasnt in place when we were calling but were going back in Oct. In any case it didnt hurt us beyond recovery to eat a little early or late a few times. I've also found that to go to most of our prefered restaurants without a reservation and be willing to wait up to an hour, generally they will do their best to accommodate you if your party isnt too big.

JDo they automatically add the 18% gratuity to the counter service meals at Pop/AS, etc?:confused3 That seems to negate the discount, since no one would ever tip there.

Thanks!
