TIW card

Hi all! Planning our August 2012 trip and have considered getting a TIW card, but have a question. We are a family of 4 traveling, and will split up on occasion for a day or 2. If I get the card in my name and DH and DD want to go to Epcot for the day and I take DS to AK, can DH take card for his meal (assuming ADR at Epcot)? I have read that I can get an additional card for $50, but just does not make sense for a day or 2 of separation. I am assuming they would put my name on it.

Or maybe we just use our more limited AR or DVC discounts and forget the TIW card.

They can put the name of any adult AP holder on the card but that person must be present at the meal for it to be used. If you want to split up and both use the card then you would have to pay for the $50 2nd card for someone in the household.

FWIW, the TIW card is good at the counter services at Animal Kingdom. So either one of you could actually take it that day. If you're going to eat at AK you could still take the card, and let hubby get the other sort of discount.

3 of us, one being a 6 year old (and the adults aren't "big eaters"), made the TIW card "worth it" inside of 10 days...it's very possible that your group of 4, even with some meals not getting the discount because you're touring separately, could make it come out as an overall discount.

The situation you describe is the exact reason they offer the second card at a reduced cost. Only you can decide if it is worth it for you.

The card can only be used by the person whose name is on it. Technically the cardholder must be present to claim the discount. I have on occasion been asked for ID to prove that I am the cardholder.

As noted, they do offer the option to get a second card for a spouse at a cost of $50. It's considered part of the same membership, so if you split up the spouse card can be used for a discount, but if both spouses are present and trying to get a discount for more than 10 diners, only one card can be used.

Some of the restaurants offer an AP discount - separate from a TIW discount. YOu could check that list and see if something appeals for the non-TIW card holder when you split up. There's plenty of choices and you get 10% usually. Many are just one or two meals, although Trail's End is all three!

We have had the same experience as TDC Nala - on several occasions my husband has been asked for ID to prove he is the cardholder. Doesn't always happen but it happens often enough that I wouldn't be trying to use the card if my name wasn't on it.

We split up but either meet for meals or just do counter service at times when we won't be together.

We love the TIW. We definitely "get our money's worth" out of it over the course of the year. We enjoy good food and a few drinks with dinner so it is perfect for us.
