I love DVR -- we even named our puppy Tivo.

If you aren't too concerned about whether or not you have the "Tivo" brand (you just want the DVR), tell DirecTV you want a free one, just like they offer new customers.

If they won't give it to you, switch to Dish Network and get their current free offer (I just switched from DirecTV to Dish just to get new equipment, three months of free HOB/Showtime/Cinemax/etc., and a discount on my monthly bills for the first year of a two-year contract. I really am saving a lot of money).

I am not just saying this because I work for DTV, but any company that you sign a contract with will give you a promotional offer. The OP would have gotten a promotional offer when he or she signed up. Promotional offers for new customers simply cannot be given to anyone who asks, otherwise everyone would be asking for them. What is done for one, can't be done for all, which is unfair. This is why existing customer offers are in place for existing customers. New customer offers are for new customers. New customer offers are selling points to attract new customers to increase revenue. If these special offers weren't given, there would be no competition at all.
Just wanted to give you a bit of education as to why these offers exist in the first place. Yes, people do have the choice of switching companies every 1 or 2 years (depending on their contract), but most people do not want the hassle and would rather stay with the company they have.
