What we do (and I think this is what Mary Ann is saying) is watch TV off the antenna while recording a show off the satellite. But this limits us since the show were watching has to be on one of the major networks.
Mary Ann, hmmmm, that's strange. I wish I knew how that works. It's all Greek to me too!
Olaf, yes I meant two cable lines. We had one line that goes through our media box in the basement, but he said he'd have to drill a hole and install another line in order for us to be able to watch one thing while recording another. It's so weird how it seems to work different for everyone.
We have our TiVo hooked up to our digital cable and home theatre sound system's receiver. I can record something and watch something else. I use the PIP function and the analog cable that is on the line also. The only down side is that what I watch isn't through the surround system.

We have DirecTV...and TWO Tivo's.
Yeah, sadly enough, 1 wasn't enough.
On both Tivo's we can record 2 shows at once (aka - watch one and record another at the same time)
I believe we have FOUR wires coming off the satellite? (or we have 2 and it's split into 4? yeah...that makes more sense...)
I dunno...all I remember, is that when we got our 2nd one a few weeks ago, DH was on the roof and I was in the attic...he was pushing the line in, and i was pulling it. heheheh and I was still in my jammies.
I should ask DH how it's all set up...it's foreign to me! heheh.
