Ha, same here. My office is closing at the end of the year, and only about 30% of us are staying on, but working remote. The rest (about 150 people) were offered their same job but would have to move to our world corporate headquarters out of state, or take their severance package and find a new job. I'd say that about 80% of those people decided to leave. It's been really sad around here as people have left and this month our facilities team has been busy packing stuff up, taking things off the walls, and breaking down offices. It gets more and more empty every day.
The young people will fall somewhere, but I really worry for the older ones. I just had a man probably around 60-ish year olds who is still here and has decided to take a few months off instead of finding something else right away. His wife is blind and he has an adult special needs child. He is such a nice man - I've worked on a few projects with him - and I know there are more like him here. It's ridiculous that companies can just make these decisions without worrying about their employees, and although I will be staying, I know my job is never "safe". They are losing a LOT of really talented, loyal people in this move, and there is really no good reason for it. The majority of people here have the ability to work remote, but only 4 departments were chosen to. The rest either have to move or quit. It's insane.
Next week is going to be really hard saying goodbye to everyone who is left.
