I have been inspired to start a thread on how to save money at disney world! I think that everyone can leave a tip on how they save a little bit here and there! I will start with how we save on pop or drinks. I go to the dollar store before we leave and buy plastic reusable cups and then when we go and the kids want a drink I buy one big drink and split among them. I always say if they want more I can go and get another one! This has really worked because before I would get everyone a drink and they would throw them out after a couple of sips to go on a ride. (one disclaimer here I would never do this in a table service setting just when they need a quick drink)

The food at Disney is very expensive, but the portions are huge. My daughter and I purchase one meal and split it. (As you said, only at counter service. Never table service.) It is more than enough to satisfy us. When we order two separate meals, we end up throwing half away. Also, really evaluate the value of the DDP. We had had trips where we have used it and saved a lot. Other trips, it would have been much more than our out of pocket cost. Basically, unless you are planning to eat at the most expensive table service and counter service places, it will be cheaper to pay out of pocket.

this will be a great thread! my wife could write a book on this.I will mention one off the top of my mickey hat.....you can buy glow sticks/jewelry very cheaply at home and take them out when that "expensive cart" comes strolling by at parade time.:)

FYI - There are already many ideas and threads about this on the budget board.

You can 'pay' a snack credit for a bottle of water; approx 'cost' $4 (nearly any food/beverage up to $4 can be purchased with a snack credit so I use that as the actual value).

Or you can pay cash for a bottle of water; approx cost $2.50.

Or you can walk up to any food service location with a soda fountain and they will give you a cup full of ice and cold water for free; approx cost: smile and say "please" and "thank you".

Kind of a no-brainer to help with the budget. And if you want 4 cups, they give you 4 cups. Same price.

Disney has a wonderful policy of allowing you bring your own food and drink into the parks. We with our party of 10 usually bring a soft sided cooler and a cooler backpack and take along 15 sandwiches, eight juice boxes, blueberries, grapes, and cheese cracker snacks. Everyone has a big breakfast in the morning, Our food we bring keeps us satisfied for lunch, saving money. We typically just buy a few drinks (maybe three before 4 p.m. for the party of 10. Then we do a counter service meal at around 4 p.m. for everyone. We splurge on a dessert item like a Mickey Bar before the night time show. Late on our way out buy some burgers on the Wendy's dollar menu and bring those back to our condo and eat these with salad, coleslaw, and fruit.

The biggest saving tip for a big group I think is to stay offsite renting a great condo (timeshare for the resort feel) or house if you want more than three bedrooms, private pool from an owner. VRBO for house rentals. TUG2.net classified ads sections or redweek.com for timeshare owner condo weeks to rent from timeshare owners. Yes you need a car, but you can get a place that will sleep six to eight for the price of a value or moderate on Disney property and have your own kitchen, laundry, balcony or patio. The larger the group, the more the savings, Orlando is so overbuilt, and there are great prices out there.

For water back when the airlines allowed you to take two suitcases I used to fill one suitcase with a case of water and snacks - now that you need to pay for suitcases I have invested in the Bobble reusable filtered water bottle and I fill up the bottle with water from either fountains or getting a cup at the counter service and then I add a drink mix like the Crystal Lite packages. For this upcoming trip I found the Brita filtered bottle which has a wider mouth and it will be easier to put ice in.

To save money on possibly needing to pay for a second suitcase on the way home for all the things we buy when I pack all full size bottles of shampoo and things like that that are almost gone but enough to last us on our trip and then I throw the bottle so that I will have that room in my suitcases that they took on the way down.

We also split meals and snacks so that we can try a lot of new things. In May when we went to Starring Rolls for lunch we bought one sandwich and an extra croissant and we spllit the meat on the sandwich because it was way too much for one.

You can just order a hamburger or sandwich at a CS restaurant. Even tho the menu board lists combos, usually with fries, you are not required to order a combo. Try it for yourself. Who needs all those fatty fries, anyways?

Instead of impulse buying souvenirs throughout the trip, I take pictures of anything I think I might want (either with my camera or my phone). I also make sure to take a picture of the UPC. Then at the end of my trip, I can look at everything that caught my eye and decide what I want the most. By having the UPC, it makes it easier for CM's to tell you where the merch is. Or to order it when you get home.

On our first day of our last trip my son wanted popcorn. So I bought the bucket of popcorn. Each morning after that we popped a bag of popcorn before we left the room and refilled the bucket. That same bucket will be going back with us on the next trip!!

Figuring out a way to make and/or eat breakfast in your room is a big money saver.

I need a low carb breakfast so i usually have gone down to the food court, but it is so expensive, and a waste if you use the DDP for breakfast. Next time I will bring cold cuts and cheeses for breakfast, low carb and will fit in my mini-fridge just fine. DD will eat cereal, and DS is pretty easygoing. That leaves stubborn DH, who can go down to the food court if he wants to. ;)

Making coffee in your room and sticking with water instead of soda is money saving, more tasty (in the case of the coffee) and more healthy as well.

One of the things we are doing on our upcoming trip to save money is to go to Walmart once we get there and buy breakfast items to have breakfast in our room/house. We are currently booked into the All Star Music Family Suite but it is $250 a night. We can get a 4 bedroom, 3 bath private home with a pool 3 miles from Disney for $87 a night. If free dining gets offered for our dates we will stay with our reservation on property but if we have to pay out of pocket for food we are staying off-site and saving $1,400 on our resort. That is more than enough to pay for our food out of pocket. If we do stay off-site we will only eat one meal in the park, a CS lunch, then when we leave property we will go eat at McDonald's or Denny's or some place cheap and save money that way too. If your family doesn't mind eating sandwiches you can take in a soft sided cooler, like PP said, and put it in a locker for the day and go back and get it out at lunch time and have your very inexpensive sandwiches. But for my family that won't work because nobody likes sandwiches. We are buying a couple of cases of water at Walmart and are going to take in one or two bottles of water per person in our backpack along with some snacks of each person's choosing to save from having to buy and drinks or snack while in the park.
Me and the 3 kids are flying in and my husband is driving in. Mainly because he doesn't want to fly and because we want to have our own car while we are there. But even if yo stayed off property and rented a car it would be cheaper than where we are staying.
If you have a family of 4 or less you can stay in a value room for less than $100 a night. But off property is always going to be cheaper. I looked into houses through VRBO but they were kind of higher than everyone else. I went through Villa Direct (villadirect.com) and found the perfect house for us. It has 4 bedrooms so each kid will have their own room, it has a private pool, a fully equipped kitchen, a game room with a pool table, Foosball, air hockey and ping pong, so the kids will stay occupied in the evenings. It has free high speed internet. The only thing it doesn't have included in the price is pool heat. And that costs anywhere from $25 a day to $40 a day JUST TO HEAT THE POOL! So we won't be doing that. But we are going in October so the pool should be plenty warm enough for the kids to play in it.
One of the biggest money savers, I think is where you sleep and how you eat. If I could get my family to eat sandwiches we could save $50 every day not having to buy CS lunches. Over 10 days that is $500 we could save. Eating breakfast in the room saves about $35 a day over the course of 10 days, $350. Not buying everyone a $4 snack twice a day at Disney will save $40 a day. However if we get the free dining plan, that will be a $1,700 value for our 10 day stay so we will probably keep that and stay on property. It works out money wise both ways, to stay on property with free dining or to stay off property and pay for our own food.

I'm surprised the op didn't know about the budget board, being an old timer and all.

We have free dining this time but usually we pay OOP and bring our own snacks. We have a set souvineer amount and if one wants a snack (like ice cream, pretzel, funnel cake) it comes out of souvineer money. We drive so we'll go out of Disney area to buy cheap dinner after parks. We eat breakfast in the room every day.
To save room in car we only bring enough clothes for half the week so when I go to wash I always bring my own detergent and dryer sheets. I bring extra in case someone else is in there and doesn't have any; always at least offer :)
We never rent strollers, always bring our own.
We do not do photopass. Im not really thrilled with some of the pictures they take (have gotten the cards before but never been wowed enough to buy them).

Hi !

Love this thread, and I'm glad YOU posted this on this board instead of the budget
board. Not everyone goes to the that board anyway.

Ways to save money:

Stay offsite

Get FREE water from kiosks around WDW
You can also buy the iced tea packets/crystal light to add to your water

Split Meals

Eat a large lunch (which is cheapter than dinner)

Eat counter service dinner

Bring your own snacks

Don't buy the park hop tickets

Have fun.

Saving money for us starts long before our trip. When shopping, pricing out groceries, well, just about anything, I think to myself..."The savings could be put in the Disney Jar". We use that money for extras at Disney, like pins, a Grey Goose Slushie, or a T-shirt I can't live without!

And, yes, I hardly ever go to Budget Board because 1) I forget about it and 2) when I do go to it, it isn't Disney related.

If you are paying for food OOP do TS for lunch rather than dinner.
You can share a plate at a TS restaurant if you wish. (not buffets of course)
At one restaurant I plan on ordering soup, an app and dessert. (this is more because that is what looks good from reading the menus online than to save money, but it is cheaper than an entree)
We skip hoppers and get the WPF&M option.
Bring at least a few drinks and snacks.
Next trip I am making breakfast in the room almost everyday.
