Tips on driving down from NYC

We are planning to drive from the Bronx to Orlando. We'll be leaving at around 6am on a Saturday. My DH will be doing all the driving and he does not like to drive at night so we figure on stopping somewhere between 6 - 8 pm and finding a hotel to stay in for the night. We then plan to leave the hotel again at around 6am and drive the rest of the way.

For those of you who've done the trip. How far can we expect to get the first day. We were hoping to make it to south of the border but after reading about how bad the hotels are there I'd like advice on where we could stay.

Also, if we stick to our schedule, at about what time can we expect to reach Orlando? I know it depends on how many rest stops we make but we aren't planning on many so can someone give me an estimate?

Also any other tips would be appreciated.

We drove from upstate NY ( near Albany) in 2000

we left about 5 am
made a few bathroom breaks and a lunch break
drove till about 9 pm and stopped in raliegh NC
headed out around 6 the next morning and hit Orlando around 4 in the afternoon

we didn have to deal with some constrution so that may change things a bit

We drive from Central NJ, without traffic about 1 1/2 hours from the Bronx. We leave our house around 3:30AM, because even on a weekend, the area around DC can still be a mess anytime during daylight hours. Leaving at 6AM from the Bronx, you could find significant traffic around the Baltimore/DC area, so be prepared for that. If you don't stop much, and don't hit much traffic, you should make it to the South Carolina/North Carolina boarder by the time you want to stop. A GREAT place to stop, not to far from South of the Border is Florence, SC. It's at exit 164 on 95 about 30 miles south of South of the Border. There are lots of hotels and restaurants there. Florence, SC is about a 7 - 8 hour drive to WDW, so if you do leave at 6AM, you should be at WDW between 1 - 2PM.

I'll second the Florence area. When I've driven from NC, I've occasionally left around 6 or so at night, just to get a few hours of driving under my belt (not a drive all night person!) Florence is a good stopping place - nice clean hotels and restaurants, too. Then not too long in the car the next day!

Check out www.freetrip.com and plug in your information and it will create a road plan for you with the hotels (depending on what you choose form cheap to expensive). This will give you an idea of where you will be depending on the miles. I can't really explain it better than this so go check it out. I was very happy to see what hotel is in what state and at what mile. This is great for planning if you're stopping along the way. I hope it helps you out.
