I know my Dis buddies will have some good advice...:thumbsup2

I need a weekend rental 6/25-6/29 in Kansas City. Just two of us, so a compact is okay...I've only rented in the Orlando area, and a lot of the coupons I've found are for Florida only or for a weekly rental. Other coupons I've found for some reason do not apply to my dates.

Am I better off waiting for a last minute deal? Any tips/info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance....

I just booked a rental car for 5/13 thru 5/16. I am picking it up at our local airport (ABE). I got a compact for $49 thru National. I started at $55, but have been checking and changing codes everyday.

The corporate codes that you can find on Mousesavers are good for anywhere, not just Orlando. I am using this link for my rental

I have found the key to getting good rental car rate is to find one that you are happy with and book it. I did and have modified it twice, so far.

We may be able to help you out more if you tell us where you are picking up/returning the car, as well as the time.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be picking up at MCI (KC airport) about 6/25 5:30p and returning 6/29 8a MCI.

I'll check out that website too.

ETA: whoa...I was quoted $217! guess I'll keep trying...

Alamo has weekend rentals from $15.00/day for a compact but car must be returned by Monday evening and not tuesday as is your case. From Friday @ 5:30PM to Monday @ 5:30PM the total for a mid size is $114.89 using ID 7015446 and free ecoupon upgrade AU2291VYT. Rate is $177.67 total using costco code 7014627 for your times.

Thanks for your reply! I was thinking it was the extra day that was putting me over the top. I'm going to have to see if perhaps I can return the car and just take a taxi for my last night and to the airport in the morning. The airport shuttle is $34/each way, and I'll need transportation to get around during the weekend too. I'll have to juggle to see what works out best.

ooh, that's much better! Thanks so much for helping me. I knew the Dis would be the place to ask.

Just FYI: MCI is always very high-priced: Kansas City has exhorbitant "tourist taxes" that drive up the cost.

I just used Priceline for next weekend in Denver. $15 per day plus taxes and fees for Full Size (Hertz).

I used Budget for another rental in DFW for May 30th to June 7th (premium for $19 per day plus taxes and fees ... payed in Advance)

Yeah, my daily rates are great, but the taxes more than double it! Argh!

Thank you both. I think I'm going to try to press my luck with a last minute rate. Since its the taxes that really ups the price, I can't do much about that part.

Most cities have had or added all kinds of junk fees to airport rentals as a means of generating revenue; if you're not an Auto Club member, I'd strongly recommend you join.

Once you do, stick to renting cars from Hertz Local Edition offices, and you can very easily save $100.00+ dollars on a weekly rental in KC or most anywhere else, and somewhat less by avoiding renting a car at the airport, since you're bound to get gouged by additional fees.

That generally does work on a longer-term rental of a week or more, but if you are just there for a weekend (like the OP) or for a day, as my DH often is for business, it usually just isn't worth it to go completely off-airport. Most of the time the cab rides will set you back more than you save.
