Tips for surprising the kids?

We were at Disney last year for our "GRAND" (read $$$$$) vacation with our vow renewal, etc., so the kids were told that we wouldn't be going back to Disney for a few years. We found out about a month ago that DH has to attend a conference in Orlando in May, so of course the "no Disney" went out the window and I started planning for all of us to go with Dh to the conference. We haven't told the kids that we are going to Florida. DD11 is kind of nosy so we had to give them a reason why we were requesting time off school for them, etc. We told them that the conference is in Baltimore and we would be spending a week at the motel pool, aquarium, etc. while DH attends the conference. We will drive to Baltimore on Wednesday night for an early Thursday morning flight. That Thursday just happens to be my youngest Ds's 5th birthday. So, I'm going to have a t-shirt made for his birthday that he will open that morning (when we wake them up at the crack of dawn to take Daddy to his conference so we can have the car for the day!). The shirt will say something like "I'm 5 and we're going to Disney World for my birthday". Then I'll give the other two kids Disney shirts too! Here's hoping I can keep it a secret until then!!!

bluwater ..i have tears running down my cheeks reading that letter!!!
great letter

I surprised my DD for her 10th birthday last year. I picked her up at school and told her that we were going to celebrate her birthday tonight (2 days early). I asked if she could go out to dinner anywhere - where would she want to go. Knowing that the Rainforest Cafe is her favorite place and it is near the airport - we headed off to eat. We live about 2 hours from the airport and of course after dinner it was late, so I suggested we get a room and spend the night. I told her that this was a very special hotel that had a bus that you got to ride to go to breakfast and we would have to get up very early to catch the "Breakfast Bus". Long story short -- her Dad called that morning to wake us up and suggested to her "Since you and Mommy are right by the airport, why don't the two of you just fly to WDW today." She started jumping up and down and squealing!!!!   She kept asking can we go, can we go, can we go.....  We got on the shuttle bus to the airport and off we went.

It was a birthday she will never forget. It was also special because it was just a Mommy and me tripprincess: princess: (our first one without DH and her 3 older brothers). DH got to see (rather hear) the excitment because he was the one that called her to tell her she was going. She was soooooo excited:woohoo: that day and told everyone that its my birthday and I am going to WDW and I did not know -blah, blah, blah. The pilot had everyone sing happy birthday to her. We will never be able to top that trip.

This May we are returning - the whole family this time. Everyone knows we are going, but they don't know we are going to fly. We are going to try to keep that a surprise too. That may be difficult esp. if we mention the "Breakfast Bus"!!
