Does anyone have any experience with this? What should I expect? I’m ok with waiting about an hour or so.

If you get to the park 75-90 minutes before opening and RD FOP, you should be on and off the ride by 9:30am.

If your party can't stay ahead of the pack, I would suggest waiting until later in the day to ride. The wait will be the same as if you were at the front gate 90 minutes before opening.

It all depends on where you want to wait. Do you want to wait before the park is open so everything else is a walk-on after you get off? If so, rope drop FoP and stay at the front of the pack. I suggest getting there at least an hour before park opening. Do you want to get in a long long and let every ride queue up long lines by the time you get off? Go later in the day.

I was able to rope drop in late August with an hour wait. We were at the bus stop at 8:15 for an 9:00 open. I tried this past Saturday during Extra Magic Hours at Animal Kingdom, getting to the bus stop at 6:50 a.m. at the Swan for an 8:00 a.m. open. Unfortunately, no bus for the Animal Kingdom showed up for 40 minutes. Our bus got there only 10 minutes before opening. By that time, the wait for Flight of Passage was nearly two hours, despite being only resort guests. Next time I'm going to rent a car and add to the congestion.

The last time I checked Touring Plans, the wait for FOP at 9:30 am was 8 times longer than the same line at 9:30 pm.

There are far more rope dropper than late nighters which keeps the lines short for those of us that prefer evening touring.

I have a third plan to add to the mix.

First of all, although not advertised, and not guaranteed, AK has been opening between 8:15 and 8:45 most morning. So be sure to arrive nice and early.

I was there last week and the wait at 9AM was 120 minutes. The line was down the FOTLK bridge and back, winding back to Tiffins. This lines for everything else were nonexistent. Even Navi was a walk on.

If the line is long and windy at rope drop, I wouldn't wait in it. I would ride everything else with 5-15 minute waits. Navi first, then the Safari, then Everest, then Kali. Last, Dinoland. By the time you get back to FOP the line will surely be entirely inside the building.

Update: First, thanks everyone for your information. We were staying at Wilderness Lodge and we had our own car. We left the hotel about 7:45 for a 9am opening time. We were in the line to enter Pandora by 8:20 and we were back to about the main entrance to Tiffins. I can’t remember what time they started walking us all back but we were on the ride at 9:28am!

The ride was absolutely amazing. I purposely avoided ride videos and articles detailing the ride. I like for everything to be a surprise. I did pick up a few details but for the most part my knowledge was limited.

One thing to note. When we left the park at 2pm the wait was 105 min. Which isn’t that bad. It was much longer between 9:30-11:30 or so.

Glad it went well for you. We went this past Saturday at rope drop arriving at 730 and waited 3 hours.

THIS

If you are a little late for rope drop and aren't in that first group to enter Pandora, high tail it to Navi as soon as you resolve your fact that you didn't make it on time.

Then leave Pandora and ride every thing else. You will be amazed at how empty the rest of the park is. Once you have accomplished everything that you wanted to, head back to FOP. You will have to wait for FOP, but you will have little to no wait for the rest of the park, and your FOP wait will very likely be shorter than it was at 9:30
