I was wondering if someone could explain to me what happens in MK when it opens.

I keep hearing about the "rope drop" and Mickey and Friends riding in on the train and a song???? I keep thinking that if I get there when it opens, I'll be stuck standing in the walkway underneath the train station and won't see anything.

Do I need to be there like 45 mins. before official park opening to see it, and is it worth it?

Where do I need to be standing to see Mickey & Co. come in on the train?

Very confused. Please help as I am going Dec. 10th and I think I want to do this but need more info.

I only got to see it once, but it's outside the park (the area just past the turnstiles), before you go under the train station. Viewing is good from just about anyplace there.

My wife and I went to the MK opening the last day we were there in April. We got in line all the way to the right of the main gate and watched the train arrive, and the 'Mayor' get ready to open the park. About halfway through his speech, the CM that was at our gate suddenly said 'OK you two, come on through!'. Needless to say, we didn't wait for the speech to end, we ran straight to Space Mountain and got on the very first car of the day. It was one of the best MK experiences we ever had. We felt like royalty for the rest of the day!

Don't let anyone fool you about the rope drop. Its not an opening show, do you remember the old westerns on TV, the stampede? That's the rope drop. :rotfl: :rotfl2:

That is not funny. When I was a CM at MGM I was trampled by rude guests who couldn't wait to get in. I was at the main rope in front of the hat. It was actually two ropes connected in the middle, so there should have been 2 CM's, there wasn't. The opening began to play and there was some miscommunication regarding when the rope should be dropped. 2 CM's at a nearby rope dropped theirs before they should have. There was new Millionaire pin due out that day and my guests were so mad that someone might get there before them. So they rushed the rope. A nice family stopped and helped me pick up the rope. IT WAS AWFUL!! I just hope everyone remembers to be patient and wait! Funny part is I got back to GMR and was a mess. I was just very shaken by the stampeding guests, but I had to go give a tour. Guess who was in the first seat? The wonderful family that stopped to help. Didn't mean to ramble on.

Ok are you able to go into the park before the ceremony is over or do you have to wait till the show/speech/singing is over.

Trying to get to have DD 4 wake up Tinker Bell. So I wanted to see how early we should get to the gate.

How can you get to be the family on the train with Mickey and Minnie. Is this a special request or how do you get picked, anyone know the answer?

Don't know about the other poster but I'm not laughing at the "rope drop" but at the thought of those stark raving crazy lunatics who do what happened to you! And it's more like shaking my head nervous laughter at those nuts. I know what you mean. I've been therer first thing in the morning and it is horrible about how crazy-obsessed people can become over a theme park and some rides if you get down to it. You'd think that these people were going for the last morsel of food on earth and God help you if you're in their way. It's just insane. But the OP wanted to know what rope drop was like and sadly JPN4265 hit the nail on the head.

No I understand what you mean. It just made me think of that awful story. I can't get over how crazy people are!! Even the one or two times we have gone crazy like that, we never run over people or past a rope!!! How crazy!!

Well, that pretty much answers MY question. I think we'll skip the rope drop. The crowds are all I can handle when you are trying to leave, let alone enter. No thank you, I'll pass.

Far better way to get into the park early and enjoy some time before crowds is to get an early character breakfast at Crystal Palace or the Castle. We did this twice and both times were able to do all of Fantasyland in record speed without any lines. It was wonderful.

is to have dining reservations for as early as possible at Crystal Palace or Castle. We had reservations for 8:10 am. They let us in the park at 7:45, and we were eating at 8:00. We did not rush and were finished eating at 8:35. We went to the castle, and were the first family at the rope. They dropped the rope at 9:00. We were the first family on Peter Pan, then went to Dumbo and Then to Pooh. We rode those rides in about 40 minutes total. We went to Buzz and got FP and jumped in stand by line that was about a 30 minute posted wait (actually 15-20 minute wait). Then jumped back on buzz with FP. We had all this done by 10:45. We were then able to enjoy the rest of the day at a leisurely pace by using fast passes and not watching parades. We are not a parade loving family.

Honestly, if you watch the opening show (which does exist) that takes about 10 minutes and stay back until the end and wave to Mickey, most of the nuts will have run in and you will be able to walk right in. We do it every time we are there. Just as a note, they do not do the opening show on EMH mornings.
