Tips for flour/water t-shirts!

I made mine on Saturday and washed them on Tuesday, came out great! Here are my tips:
1-When putting the flour/mixture on your shirts, let it dry completely! I did not and the design isn't as bright as I would like. I am going to remedy this by going over the design with fabric paint in the bottle, but thought you guys should know. If you can't let it dry outside in the summer sun as NKJZMOM suggested, I would leave it overnight. I didn't cos I thought my cat would eat it. LOL!
2-Instead of having to pick off the dried flour mixture, I threw the shirts in the wash. Came off beautifully! Of course, I had teeny pieces of dried flour left over in my washing machine but that was easily remedied with a few sucks from the hose of my Dyson. If you don't want to deal with this, let the shirts soak in water for 15-20 minutes and it will become all soft and easily removable. :-)

Hope this helps anyone, I am sooo in love with this board!
PS-Here are the instructions provided by NKJZMOM:
I think this was from the Family Fun magazine.

Supplies:
Squirt bottle (I used an almost empty glue bottle and just cleaned it out)
Flour
Water
Spray fabric paint

Mix the flour and water until it is the consistency of mustard and pour into bottle. Squeeze onto the shirt in whatever pattern you desire. Lay the shirt in the sun to dry. After the mixture has hardened completely spray with fabric paint then lay the shirt in the sun for paint to dry. When the paint has completely dried slowly peel away the flour/water mixture to reveal the pattern below.

I did this on a hot day at the end of September and by the evening we had all 7 shirts ready to go. I even added spray glitter for fabric after we peeled the flour mixture off. We got lots of comments from CMs and guests alike. The CM on the boat to and from Tom Sawyer Island loved them...he said, "OOOOHHHH I love those!!! I read about them in Family Fun and have been dying to make one!!!" I hope he did because they're so easy and fun and you just can't mess them up!

The magazine had a sunburst pattern I believe. We just wanted to make it more Disney-ish and decided to use Mickey's head. I just swirled the mixture around and around with some being straight and others being at angles. Little did I realize that DisneyQuest has that same pattern on the "Q" and the folders that you get your Photopass pictures in also have Mickey's head in that same swirl pattern. Pretty neat!!!

Lyn5 those are so cute! :sunny: This is probably a stupid question, but for the picture in the middle - was the shirt red? Did you put the flour mixture where the red swirls are and paint with white paint?

Thanks so much for sharing!! :wave2:

Yes, the shirt is red...and that is not a stupid question at all. In fact, I saw a shirt that was tye dyed with black in between and I was wondering if it was a black shirt that got bleached first, then colored with the dye or white, dyed and painted black in between :confused3

DH printed a larger version of this hole punch for me on cardstock:

Then, I cut out the black part and layed the "template" on my shirt and filled in the center with the flour/water mix. After it dried overnight, I sponged white liquid paint around Mickey, twice, and then did a layer of silver glitter paint over the white. It was a little work to get the flour/water mix off since the glue dried over the paste. I think the next shirts I make with liquid paint I will not use the mixture, just the cardstock.

I only could find purple spray paint here, I don't have too many craft stores, which is the reason I used the liquid white Tulip paint. We are going to MVMCP this year, for the first time, and I thought this pattern may show up in the pictures well.

wow, those are wicked cool. Glad y'all got moved to this board from wherever you were before cause I'm going to have to try this! thanks for sharing the instructions and the pictures. maggie

I've really been enjoying all the T-shirt ideas too. I used to do a lot of T-shirts when DS's were younger. I am now getting the urge to start again. I love all the new ideas!

I think I am addicted to making t-shirts now :rotfl:
Here are the shirts we did last night:
DD (3 1/2 years) stamped this in white, then I restamped a little and added a layer of silver glitters and then outlined in silver:

I am going to make a third shirt tonight for a DIS friend of mine...I may do black with the white/silver.

I am new to this section of the DIS, please let me know if I should only post my photos on the t-shirt thread  , thanks.

Thanks for answering my questions. I think I understand now.

I can't wait to make a shirt like that.

I love the new shirts you made. I especially like the green one!! Very cute!! Thanks for sharing. :)

You are welcome :flower:

Wow, these are soooo cool. Great job everyone! Too bad my trip is over!

Is there more directions some where? It sounds like a neat project for my girl scout troop. But I dont' totally understand.
Do you start with a white shirt? and then dye it? Or does the flour take the color out?!?!?

The flour/water mixture helps to stop the paint from staining the fabric. In my most recent shirts with DD, I didn't use the mixture. I cut a picture from cardstock and we painted inside the thick paper. I learned about the flour mixture on the t-shirt thread, there are a lot of cool ideas and samples there.
