Tipping?

Hi-
We will be at WDW January 4-11. This is our first trip there since January 2002. Since we haven't been in so long, I wanted to find out what the going rate/acceptable amount is for tipping housekeeping. Also, do you tip on a daily basis, it wait until the end of the stay? I'm assuming daily us better, in case we don't have the same housekeeper each day.

Actually, housekeeping is a non-tipped postion at WDW. So no tipping is required.

Tipping is individual, but we tip $3.00/day for 2 of us. We do leave a tip daily, as you say, mousekeepers can change. And if you just leave it for the last day, someone who just came on duty could get entire tip, and was not the one who cleaned your room all week.

We usually leave $1 per person, per day for housekeeping. If you choose to tip you should do so everyday as there will be different people tending your room each day. There are a bunch of web sites that have very cute envelope templates to leave the money in.

well I used to clean hotel rooms for living and pretty much NEVER got tipped at all. this was a national chain in a tourist town( Virginia Beach)

I also got paid fairly well( above minimum wage) so its not like I couldn't survive on just my hourly salary, even during slow periods where I would only work 25 hours a week.

since it is not an advertised tip position, we don't tip at all while at Disney. We also tend to clean up after ourselves, even going so far as to sloppily make the bed every day. Now if we asked for and got extra service( late night delivery of towels or an extra blankie) then we tip at that point directly to whomever delivered.

We tip five dollars a day, 2adults and 2children and tidy up each day before they come in. I consider it a built in part of my trip expenses. Most travel sites also suggest that housekeeping should be tipped. It is not a nice job period and I feel this is just a small token of thanks.

It is their job which they are paid to do. I don't like how tipping has crept into so many professions that haven't historically been tipped positions so I don't participate. You may do so if you'd like.

How about I don't tell you who you should or shouldn't tip and you don't tell me who I should or shouldn't tip and we all live in harmony together?

If you ask Disney directly, they will tell you that housekeeping isn't considered a tippable position..pretty much the same as CMs and bus drivers. But, for some reason people persist in tipping housekeeping. I have had housekeepers that refused to take any tip I left daily! Others had no issue with taking it. If I have above average service, then I may choose to leave a tip. But, if I have to wait until 3pm to get my room serviced, or they are remiss in some way while in the room then no, no tip is left.

I was at SSR a week or so ago...we get service on day 4 of our stay...trash is removed, towels are replaced and new toiletries are left. I usually leave a small tip. This past time, I was in my room when housekeeping came. I had left $3 on the vanity, with a note that said 'thanks housekeeping'. The housekeeper actually made a point of coming to the patio door and thanking me before he left! That was a first.

If you do choose to tip your housekeeper, do it daily because your housekeeper can change on a day to day basis. I usually tip (when I do tip) $1 pp each day, and if there has been something outstanding, then I up the amount.

Everyone is free to make their own choices...there is no right or wrong here. Disney tells us what they expect, we then make our own decisions.

I had just come here to ask this very question. I am planning on tipping $1 per person so $4. I was wondering if that would be enough. I guess since some don't tip, then that would be fine. I printed out some cute Mousekeeping envelopes to leave each day. I read that if you do tip they go above and beyond leaving towel Mickey's and such which I think the kids would like. Plus kids can get messy, we will keep it picked up, but I appreciate the job they do.

When we went back in 2008 we left $5 per day for 2 of us. Now we will have 3 of us with the addition of our daughter and I will still leave $5 per day as I feel that is pretty good!

We tip $5 per day with two of us in a regular resort room. If we are staying DVC we tip $10 for cleaning day. Housekeeping works hard everywhere, not just at Disney, and I feel they deserve a tip. BUT, as in everything in life it is a matter of personal opinion. I was raised by parents who tipped everyone. There is no wrong answer. Do what you feel is comfortable for you.

Why wouldn't you tip a lot of people daily?
Why don't you tip the college graduate who makes $10/hr teaching and caring for your preschool child with autism (including changing diapers, cleaning up vomit when he is sick, etc.)?

The reason is that you are already paying for their salary by paying for your child to go to preschool or paying for your hotel room. Disney says it is not a tipped position. Housekeepers have free will to work for what the wage is or not. Sure it is nice to leave a tip, but not required and no one should have to feel bad if they don't tip.
For the record, I usually do leave a few bucks, but I understand not handing dollar bills to everyone who performs a service for you.

If it is just DH and myself we tip $5. If it is all 5 of us we tip $10. We tip every day with a little extra on check out day.
