Tipping

Again, we're seeing the difference between tipped positions and untipped positions. At WDW, unlike most hotels, housekeeping isn't classed as a tipped position. The compensation schedule is accordingly different, whereas the other positions *are* still considered as tipped positions.

If this is how you justify not tipping that's ok. To each his own. I still plan on tipping. It's what feels right to me personally.

nvm. I'm not biting this time..... tip as you feel appropriate, it is your decision. Have a fun trip! :goodvibes

I agree it is a personal choice to tip or not. In my opinion anyone cleaning my room, fetching my car, or delivering my food deserves a tip. I always say if you think hmmm.............should I leave a tip you should. If you don't think the same way, don't tip. Your decision. In my opinion, a couple $$ won't break me but may make a big differance to someone else. Hope you have a great trip!

Thank you so much for this thread! As my upcoming trip will be my first time staying on-site, I was curious as to how the whole tipping thing worked. I will need to keep some cash handy!:thumbsup2

And don't forget to tip your dog groomer.

We always plan to tip $5 per day for housekeeping. Whether Disney considers it a tipped position or not, I'm sure it isn't an easy or fun job, cleaning up other people's messes all day. I doubt that they're getting paid very well.

For our trip, I left $5 per day for a tip for the two of us. We had GREAT mousekeeping the entire trip. Room was clean and we had more toiletries and towels than we could use. I figured the tip in as part of the vacation budget.

There were 5 of us and I left 5 a day for the first 4 days then $6 a day for the remaining days. We were there 10 days. I started reading where you should tip $1 a day per person PLUS one extra dollar so I started doing that.

We had a suite at the ASMu and had 2 bathrooms they had to clean and 4 beds to make up every day. They even would straighten our kitchen area up and organize our snacks on the cabinet and shelves.

We has excellent housekeeping.

I would tip housekeeping at ANY hotel, not just Disney. But I do know that outside of Disney it is not a very common practice. Most ppl never even think to tip the housekeeper who cleans the urine off their toilet every day. I do.

I'm not justifying anything, because we do tip housekeeping (not just at Disney), but I think it's worth looking into the reality of the situation.

Servers get much less than proper minimum wage in many states. At Disney they are considered a tippable job.

According to the DOL, minimum wage in Florida is 7.31/hour.

According to the disneycareers website, a part time housekeeping job STARTS at 8.35, which is, obviously, over a dollar more per hour than minimum wage.

I don't want to create a profile on the career website, so I cannot see the Benefits of part-time positions, but I know that housekeeping at DisneyLAND is a Union position, and therefore they have protections that a housekeeper at another hotel or resort might not have.

The minimum wage for TIPPED positions is 4.29.

There's a bit of a difference there.

We tip both, and bell services too, but it's still good to have the knowledge.

It's also interesting to note that the same disney careers website shows that the starting wage for a part time *lifeguard* is 30 cents LESS than that of a housekeeper.

Do you tip your lifeguard?

Then by this statement, we shouldn't tip our food servers, the people who help us with our luggage, our cab drivers, hairdressers, etc, because they're all doing their jobs.

My mom works in a hotel and feels that this is a tipped position. These ladies work hard for minimum wage. QUOTE]

According to the union contract, this is a non-tipped position, and is paid accordingly, plus bonuses for performance, and it is not a minimum wage position at Disney - but one of the better hourly paid positions.

The other positions, other than hairdressers, are paid tip-minimum wage (and also are required to report their tips for tax purposes - since housekeeping is not a tip position, they do not report their tips as income to Disney. Whether they do the honest thing and pay taxes on them just like the rest of us do, I have no idea, but my guess is NO).

You can never compare the standing around doing NOTHING that a lifeguard does with the sweat inducing back-breaking MANUAL LABOR of making beds and scrubbing toilets all day. NO. I wouldn't tip a lifeguard. My son use to be a lifeguard at POP Century (he lived in Florida, we didn't) and he said he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING all day long. Unless you are the pool attendant hosting the poolside games you are sitting or standing watching the pool for kids acting bad or drowning.

Ppl who don't wanna tip will come up with all kinds of EXCUSES for why they aren't going to tip.

Let one of your kids get a job as a Disney housekeeper and see if you change your mind about how hard they work and whether or not you are going to tip them.

People really need to chill the "I'm better than you because I tip" attitudes....tip if you want , don't tip if you don't want to....it's really no body's business but your own. ETA, if Disney expected housekeeping to be a tipped position, they'd be paid minimally to compensate for tips, housekeeping is one of those non tipped positions, so this tells that they are obviously well compensated for their hard work....it is up to the guest to decide if they wish to leave anything extra....you are no better or worse dependent upon what you choose to do....

WOW  you obviously never had a loved one almost drown and saved by a life gaurd! Im glad your son could stand around and do NOTHING all day and was never was put in the position of saving a 3 year olds life but dont compare that to to work of a housekeeper. I would rather have a trashed hotel room than my son dead because their wasnt a life gaurd???? Really poor analogy. Look its not an issue of who works harder.... Both people have jobs that are in the service industry. I tip because I want to not because I think Ohhh they work so hard. I work in the service industry 10 hours a day on my feet and I never expect anything from my clients. ITS MY JOB!!!!! We choose to do this for a living no one is forced to do this ya know:thumbsup2

Let one of your kids drown because a life guard feels his job is unimportant and has NOTHING to do and decide if you would rather tip your mousekeeper.
