I have read quite a few trip reports and people are pointing out something that I find a little disturbing. Those who are using the dining plan have said that when the server brings the check they are pointing out how much the tip should be. i find this to be rude. Is it me? Has anyone said anything to a manager or a server if this has happened to them. Thanks for reading :darth:

I think its a little rude but the dining plan does not include tips anymore so they bring it to you so you can figure out percentage wise what the tip should be.

Personally, I never tip the standard 15%. I always go by the service of the server. If its great they'll get a great tip. If it was ok, then they won't get so much.

My cousin's husband refuses to tip servers when they tell a "sob" story. Like the time we went to lunch and the waitress told us this story how she was a single mom in college, which had to be a lie since the nearest college was at least 2 hours away and she said she had no car and was relying on her fiance(thought she was single) to bring her to work and their kids to daycare. Oh and her mom had cancer.
But her service wasn't great though either. She kept messing up our order and she gave us coffee that tasted like the "bottom of yesterday's pot". We asked her for fresh coffee and she gave us the same crap.

I think it's an acknowledgement that tipping is a North American thing, and that WDW attracts a LOT of visitors from other parts of the globe.

I would imagine that the suggestion makes it easier for visitors unfamilar with our customs to have a starting-off place when they decide how much to tip.

We didn't have a single server in 7 TS meals point out personally what the tip "should" be. What you do get from them is an itemized bill similar to what you would get if you were paying cash, and on that receipt is the same thing I've seen on some other receipts outside of WDW saying what 15% and 20% of the bill would be. It's printed by the same machine that spits out the rest of the bill. It wasn't hand-written on the bill by the server or anything like that, which I feel would be crossing the line. I personally found it helpful since I did want to tip commensurate with service, and to do that, I needed to know what the total would have been if it wasn't on DDP and having the math in front of me was one less thing to think about.

It most emphatically was NOT the server coming to the table and saying, "Hey, your meal would have been $x if you weren't using the DDP so you should tip me (20% of $x)." In fact, I never heard the word "tip" or "gratuity" from any of my servers. Other people may have had other experiences, but this was mine.

We were not on the dining plan on our most recent trip but ate dinner with friends one night who were on the dining plan. When we received our bills, the waiter told our friends that the balance they owe is on the bottom of the bill. They were a little confused since they thought (us too) that they didn't owe anything since they were on the dining plan - they knew the tip was not included. When we checked the amount and did some math in our heads, we realized that the balance that was due was the amount of the tip that Disney felt the waiter should receive. (I guess the 18% gratuity - we were a party of more than 6). Our friends have been there three times in the last two years, on the dining plan, and they said that they never had a balance due at the bottom of their bill. They just always left the amount of money they felt the waiter should get. This must be something new that Disney is doing.

I believe Disney states that an 18% tip will be added to checks on parties of 6 or more so I am guessing this applies to the DDP too.

We ate at 1900 park fare last year and our waiter was never around and had an attitude but when the bill was given to me he made sure that he told me what I OWED him  I would have only tipped him half of what I OWED him as he was terrible.
Now this year we are going with another group I don't know how tipping goes we are staying at Fort Wilderness Cabins and there will be 4 in each cabin so if we eat together there will be 8 but 2 separate checks so how does that tip work does anyone know TIA :)

I would say that if you are all seated at the same table then it would be serving 8 no matter if there are 2 checks. As for the 1900 PF server..I would have left him NOTHING!!!

On our last trip we traveled with my parents and my sister and her family. When we all ate together (9 total) the 18% gratuity was automatically added on eventhough each family paid for their own meals (three separate checks). So, yes, the 18% gratuity will be added even if both parties are paying separately.

Just confirming what others have said. The 18% is automatically charged (so one could say you "owe" it) if 6 or more or dining together no mater how many checks it is split into.

When dining as a family of four we have never had anyone rudely point out the tip amounts. A couple of times a waiter has very politely mentioned tipping guidelines are on the bottom but not to feel that we have to tip that amount. The times that has happend have always been with great waiters who got over the suggested amount anyway.

yes, this is true, they did this for us last year. One waitress told us that she didn't like the auto add of 18% tip because people were tipping more (20%) without it!
