Tipping

I was browsing around this site and I came across a page on tipping. I have no problems whatsoever with their guidelines for tipping at the restaurants. In fact, and I say this so you know I am not a chinsy tipper (which ties into the real question below), I tend to always give 20%, even if I am unhappy. I show my displeasure by simply never going back. Right or wrong, my point here is that I always tip 20%.

My question comes from the guideline that I tip a bellhop $3 a bag for delivering my bags to my room. A room, BTW, that I am paying $382/night for. I just don't get it. I'm not against giving the bellhop something, but I have always used $1/bag as my guideline.

So, being the kind of person that wants to "get it", I thought I would ask here what people's standards are for tipping bellhops, maids, front desk people, whoever. Because if $3/bag is a reasonable guideline for tipping a bellhop, then maybe I am also in need of education in other areas. So I would appreciate any opinions or advice you may offer. I don't think of myself as cheap, but I also don't feel like giving my money away needlessly either.

Thanks, I appreciate your time and advice :)

I consider myself a good tipper as well, and tip $1 per bag, rounded up to the nearest $5, and $2-3 for very large or heavy bags. We usually have two medium pullmans, and a rollaboard, plus maybe a daypack or tote, and we'd give $5 for that.

We tip housekeeping $1 per person per day, and turndown service gets $2 per evening.

Valet gets $2 each way.

Hope this helps!

We generally give bellhops, 1 or 2 dollars a bag. When it is the family traveling, 4 of us, as opposed to me travelling on business by myself, we usually just give 10 dollars. So since we will each have one bag, that is a bit more than 2 for each bag.

I have a question about tipping also-----For all who have stayed at Fort Wilderness Campground----We will be tenting there the beginning of july arriving by plane with 3 kids I know that they'll be bringing us to our campsite using one of those little golf carts---So do we tip the golf cart driver?????

May sound stupid but I have no clue- :confused3

I tip $1.00 a bag but we travel light because we do long weekends and I usually round up to $5.00
I tip $2.00 when picking up a car never dropping off.
We mostly stay concierge and I've always left something for the wait staff.
$2.00/day for mousekeeping.
I believe tipping at meals is dependant on service, never less than 15% for lousey service upwards to 25% for great service.
Always 15% at buffets, because I'm doing half the work.

Front desk cast members at Disney aren't allowed to accept tips, so don't worry about tipping them.

What you're hearing on here about $1 a bag seems pretty good. One of my friends who recently stayed at the Grand called me the night he checked in for tipping advice (I used to work in bell services there) and I gave him this advice, and told him that it was also depending on the bag sizes. He had about eight bags total, some suitcases and a few shopping bags (he'd already been here for a week) and gave the bellman about $14, because the bellman also went and got ice for him. Neither him or his fiance could find the ice machine, so I told him he could ask the bellman to do it if he added a bit more to the tip. Then the bellman, who knew me, got on me for not knowing where the ice machines were :teeth:

Valets are about $2 per trip, more if they are unloading/loading bags for you.

What about buffets? When we were there, we ate at Cape May and H&V. I din't feel 20% was fair for refilling drinks (had to ask at that) and removing plates. The bill can be around $80. What would you leave?
BTW: I always tip 20% for TS.

We usually have 3 bags, and we drive to Disney World.

My question is, do you tip the person that loads your luggage from the car onto the cart, and then tip the person who brings it up to your room 10 minutes later. Or do you just tip the person who brings it up to your room.

The same question also when you are checking out. Do you tip the person who comes up to your room to load the luggage on the cart, and then also tip the person who brings it to your car about 10 minutes later.

We have always tipped $5 each time, so $20 total to get luggage from car to room & from room to car.

Is this what everyone else does, or do we overtip?

Please don't flame me, just wondering!

Take off 5% from whatever you tip for full service at a nicer buffet such as that at Disney or for a mothers day buffet such as the Gaylord Palms or stuff like that.

I would tip more than $5 in this case. You'll have a lot of luggage and gear, I would think you're going to want to plan on minimum $10.

Speaking of tipping, on my last trip I left out an envelope for our mousekeeper, I had decorated it and it said something like THANK YOU MOUSEKEEPING! With our names and a small picture on it. Two days in a row the mousekeeper didn't touch it, so I said screw it and pocketed the money. LOL I tried!!

Well, since we're discussing tipping, some of the restaurants, like H&V state in their flat rate that it includes tip. Do you leave extra as well? I know that I have in the past but I have done more intense reading this time and on some of the restaurants, usually buffets, it states that the price includes tip.

Just asking.

Regarding the double-tipping expected by bell staff: For me, it is a matter of doing what I want them to do. When I check in at 5PM, I want them to bring my bags directly to my room -- I don't want them stored, so I won't tip them for storage of my bags, even though that is their (carefully orchestrated) procedure (i.e., its for their convenience, not mine). OTOH, when I check in at 11AM, I have no reason to expect my room to be ready, so I do want them to store my bags until my room is ready, so I tip for storage, and separately for bringing my bags to my room.

How do you tip "separately"? Is there someone else you give the tip to? Or do you just call out that 'this is for bringing bags and this here is for storing my bags'?

When you arrive at a Disney resort, there is always someone there to take your bags into storage. If you want your bags stored (because you arrived before check-in time), you should tip that bell person who takes your bags when you arrive. Regardless of whether you arrive before or after check-in time, you should always tip the bell person that delivers your bags to your room.

when recieving good service at a buffet, the server is constantly clearing dishes, and or refilling drinks. we get our own food, but the server is still kept v busy. I would def not tip less.JMO :listen:

I would never think to tip for storing bags....where do they take your bags when they store them? :confused3

They have a secure storage area.

Believe it or not, some folks think you should tip the bell staff for storing your bags before bringing them up to your room, even if you arrive after check-in time!
