I was just piqued by another post and thought what a great idea. instead of taking cash for tipping (eating at some pricey DDP 2 service restaurants) How about putting money on a gift card I can purchase just for tips ? Less cash to carry and more convenient. Thoughts?????
Thank you

PP's idea is better. You would have to keep up with how much money is left on the gift card to be sure you didn't run out at the end (how embarrassing would that be?!). Just charge back to your room and pay off with a gift card or let it run to the credit card on file.

If you're going to use gift cards to pay off charges to your room, be sure to do so BEFORE your check out day as they will run the charge the night before you check out. Also, you may want to ask at what amount they run charges. You might need to do a gift card pay in the middle of your trip.

We had planned on doing that on our last trip and found it was just even simpler to have the tip charged to the room with our magic bands and then we paid off the tips and other things we had purchased with our gift card at the end of the trip.

We did this - worked very well “paid” every four days on so - really quick and convenient

I charge the tips with my magic band. Then, the night before I'm going to check out, I'll use cash or whatever to pay down my bill. The remaining balance goes on my credit card. I don't like gift cards because if you don't use it up, you're stuck with the balance until your next trip. I also had a issue once using a bank gift card to pay part of my bill. It was the bank's rule, not WDW. I don't remember if it was Amex or Visa.

I was planning on doing the giftcard thing for tips as well, but was wondering if it would be easier to just charge to room or pay tips on giftcards. Thank you for answering.

To me the room charge is the easiest and most convenient way to cover the tips when on DDP. I actually like charging everything to my room so that I have the summary at the end of my trip itemizing everything I purchased. I just have it charged to my cc on file and settle it once I'm home, but you could just as easily pay with your gift card before you check out.

but you could just as easily pay with your gift card before you check out.

Sorry, but feel a need to say this again:

If you wait until check out to use gift cards to pay off your balance, it will be TOO LATE as they will have already run the charges and charged your credit card.

They can also run them mid trip if you charge past the limit of what they will hold before charging. ASK at the front desk how much you can charge to the room before they charge the credit card.

This is an excellent point! It was already stated and didn't feel the need to repeat it. I've never reached that limit and always get charged at the end, but I know that the limit differs by resort type so always a good idea to ask at check-in what that limit is. Or to really be on the safe side, if you want to avoid the cc charge is to just stop by the front desk every 2 or 3 days and apply your gift cards as you go. Although to me, that's kinda removing some of the convenience of the room charge.

OT, but has anybody tried paying off the room charges with their Disney Visa Rewards? We usually use that to cover the extraneous costs of our trips but have never charged to the room and then paid it off with the rewards at the resort. Would be much easier, does that work? Or do you have to use a card with actual dollars on it instead of just rewards dollars?

We charged to the room and then went to the front desk and paid down the bill with rewards card just like it would be with a gift card.

We charge the tips to the room. We generally split gratuities as we are all adults, so we use one persons magic band just for tips. This works really well fir us, we pay thd bill off every few days.

This!
We've also been charged mid trip even we never reached anywhere near the charging limit. In fact when we were charged again at check out we still hadn't reached the charging limit including the charges they put through mid trip. If you plan to pay using gift cards or cash I definitely recommend paying off the bill every few days instead of waiting until the end. It didn't matter to us as we were using the credit card on file but we just found it odd.

I wouldn't charge the room just because I don't want the extra trip to the front desk.

no splitting for me ...with the wife LOL

We always use Disney gift cards for tipping. We charge to the room and pay with the GC.
