What is appropriate tipping while using the DDE card? Do you tip on the amount before DDE card discount is applied to the bill. Or do you tip on the amount after the discount is applied. DH just used the 20% discount as the tip. Is this correct? TIA

You tip on the amount before the discount. We would also just tip the 20% discount as the tip unless we ordered expensive alcohol. We only tip 10-15% on alcohol while we usually tip 20% on food. Be careful with the DDE card though! Some waiters will add an automatic 18% tip onto your bill and you don't want to over tip.

We always tip the amount BEFORE the discount.

It was easy for me. For the tip, I always left the discounted amount (located at the bottom of the bill, when they bring it to you), which is 20% of the bill. Worked perfectly. No having to calculate anything.

The way I look at it, the discount basically covers the tip! :goodvibes

This is exactly what we do too. As a general rule the tip will be on your bill if you are a party of 8 +.

Thanks for the replies. DH says that what he has been doing is using the discount for DDE as the tip since it is 20%. :goodvibes

We always tip pre-discount. If our bill was $100.00 then the DDE brings it to $80.00. We add 20% to the 100.00 so our final is still only $100.00.

We don't take the 20% from $80.00 to make the final $96.00.

Granted, if we had bad service we might only tip 15% or if our service was just beyond awesome we may tip 25%.

Oddly, I've had several instances in the recent past with a party of seven (includes one child and one five-month old infant) where they placed the 18% gratuity. I'm not sure if this was a DDE thing or a policy just-because thing. But they end up losing money that way, as I almost always tip 20%.
