Tipping waiters, Orlando Sentinel article.

My Missis has always said, 'she has never had as much disposable income as she did the 12 months she worked at the Rose and Crown.

I get frustrated on the american boards when you get 'service industries workers' saying, 'you should tip x,y and z as a minimium.'

I conceed servers (especially on property) work very hard and tips arent guaranteed but most do very well out of their jobs!

If we get good service, they get a good tip, poor service, poor tip. It's hardly rocket science, these people are providing a service at generally very low wages, if they are happy, polite, attentive and friendly they will probably double or treble their pay. If not they'll stay on a rubbish income.

You try smiling your way through a bad day, most of us wouldn't last until the coffee break without moaning or cracking up, these people go all day just being nice, so they earn every tip they get.

I'm not at all surprised. I did the math last time this subject was brought up and came to the conclusion that any decent waiter/waitress at disney is probably taking home more than I am in a professional role.

Considering how close to capacity disney restaurants run, I'd imagine being a waiter/waitress at a disney restaurant is quite a popular job!

The one guy in that article who does mention what he makes isnt at a disney restaurant is he? I bet the Cali Grill and Narcoossee staff make even more with them getting booked up 180 days in advance!

Our waitress at the CG said she only works 6 months a year as she makes enough in the other 6!!

I work in retail, granted it's my own shop so it pays me to be nice to customers, but I think if you do work in a service industry then you must know that you have to be nice, smile etc and not give bad service. It's just common sense. If you are giving bad servcie / not being friendly you can't expect people to tip or return to you again.

I must say that one year at Ponderosa we had awful service and the waiter had a laminated card that he put with our bill, it had the amounts that he expected dependant on your bill size. As I said the service was terrible so we didn't tip him, infact FIL left a dime - which I believe is a sign to the server that you were not happy with the service.

We do this. Shows you understand the tipping culture but think the service recieved wasnt worth much at all!:thumbsup2

You might also find that laminated card was reserved for 'visitors' to orlando. Some servers believe (and rightly so in a small amount of cases) that us brits dont realise or understand that tipping is part of american culture.

I remember my uncle telling me about some upmarket restraunt that was one of the most expensive in Orlando, didnt actualy pay its staff a wage, yet still had staff queuing up to work there, given that tips are normaly a percentage of the bill, and the bills themselves tended to be high therefore so were the tips.

Yep - i tend to give 5% for adequate, 10% for good, and 15% for excellent service
