Tipping the maids-- how much?

Hi there!

I was just clicking through some old topics and saw something mentioned about tipping hotel room maids. I couldn't find much more than that, but I started to get nervous-- there's so many people to tip, I'm afraid I'll forget someone

How much do you all leave for the maid, or is there a standard? Is it necessary to leave anything? I'm a little new to this :confused3
We'd be staying for almost 2 weeks, but for some reason it never occurred to me to tip the maid. Especially since it can't be the same maid that cleans the room every single day, right?
:laundy:

Thanks!

I do $1 plus $1 per person per day (I put it in envelopes before I go so I'm not struggling to find the singles daily). So I tip $2 per day on a solo trip.

I make up envelopes ahead of time and leave on one the nightstand each morning before we head out...that way the housekeeper who does our room that day gets the $$. We leave $5/day and there are 4 of us in the room. If we have turndown service, we leave $3/day on the nightstand prior to going out to dinner.

Thank you for the responses!
The link to the thread was also very helpful.

Is it also a problem to put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door for most days? Again, I don't usually stay in hotels, but DBF and I probably wouldn't need to be cleaned up after every single day... only every 2 days or so. We'd probably leave a tip, but wouldn't want a sheet change / towel change every day.

In my experience they do not change the sheets daily unless someone is checking out. Also they will not put out clean towels if you keep your towels on the rack. There is usually some sign in the bathroom about this. They will however, vacuum, clean the bathroom, and make the beds.

The maids will be cleaning up after myself and my 3 kids. So I typically leave a couple of dollars a day

We leave 5$/day for the four of us but tipping is always optional.

I have my envelopes done with the tip money in them, I am tipping $3.00 per day for the 3 of us. I made special envelopes from the design board on this site:) have a great magical trip.

I tip $5/day for DD8 and I. We make up Mousekeeping envelopes at home and DD8 likes to decorate them. Each day before going to the parks we leave it in the bathroom mirror. When I visited last August with my DD8, two nephews and godsister I tipped $10/day.

I do so much cleaning at home that when I'm on vacation I don't bother with it. I'm happy to tip for the convenience. :thumbsup2

$5.00 a day for the two of us. We make envelopes up ahead of time (in Disney theming) and leave one out in an visible location each day.

EXACTLY what we do! I love making the envelopes with stickers and I try to put something with OUR local on it and a simple THANK YOU as well!

I never tipped the maids before I read it on the Dis...we tip $2 a person every day

we leave $5 a day on the pillow for the mousekeepers.

We use a glass for a WDW change jar while we are there. On departure day, we leave that for the mousekeeper that has to do the hard core clean once we vacate the room. Its usually around $10. We ran into last year's mousekeeper after she had been in the room to clean already and she was as happy as could be. :goodvibes

There are 4 of us and we leave around $5 per night. I like the envelope idea with the Disney theme and will use that this time. We also like to be a little different and leave a $2 bill each day as part of the tip. I hit the bank ahead of time and pick up a stack of them. They are just unique.

I tried to tip Mousekeeping on our last trip, but they didn't take the envelopes. I made special envelopes, from the design section on this site that had: FOR MOUSEKEEPING, written on them. I put them on the nightstand before leaving the room in the morning. Each day for 5 days, the same envelope was still sitting on the nightstand when we returned at night!

Has anyone else experienced this?
