Tipping Style

Do you...

  • Tip an odd amount to even out the bill?

  • Tip a flat amount and wind up with an odd bill?

I went out for dinner with a friend recently. We were each brought a separate bill, and I noticed we had different tipping styles.

Our bills were $19.86.

She tipped $4.00, bringing her total to $23.86
I tipped $4.14, bringing my total to $24.00

It got me to wondering what everyone else does.

When you're paying with a credit/debit card, do you tip an odd amount so that the final charge is even, or do you leave a flat amount for the tip and have your total charge be an odd amount?

*For the record, as long as the waiter is tipped adequately, I don't think either method is wrong or right. I'm just asking out of curiosity.

I tip the percentage (usually 20, but will go up or down) but a relative does that add cents to make the total come out "even."

I tip a percentage and then round up to the nearest .50 or dollar. I like things to be even.

I tip a flat amount because I round up. Assuming the service was decent, I just do this:

Bill = $23.58

I take $2.35, and then I double it to $4.70 and then make it $5 and that's what/how I tip. I find it brainless so I can keep jabbering away like I do at dinners out.

my checkbook works much better with even numbers!! i even it up.

that's usually what I do too

I said odd to even out the bill to a whole dollar amount, but that's when I pay cash, which I often do.

On a card, I usually just 0 the tip portion and leave cash in a even dollar amount.

The few times I've actually tipped on the card I do whatever is faster, sometimes I don't want to have to do math when I just want to leave the table.

I tip an odd amount because I eat food off of tips so I know that every penny counts.

Example: Bill was $45.56

I divide that by 5, which is approximately $9.11. Then I'll leave $9.44. I'll never subtract, if it was less than $9.11 ($9.06, for example) to make it even, I would put $10.06.

I usually find 20% and then round up so that it's an even dollar amount. It's a lot easier for me to remember I spent $20 for a meal than remembering if it was $19.86 or $19.68.

Who thinks about stuff like this??? I tip what I tip with absolutely no thought to the final amt. Really?

Even it out. It's the only way I have a hope of remembering how much to write down. :)

I manage all the bills and such so DH has taken to tipping the same way. It just makes it easier on me if a charge is floating on a debit card and I have no idea how much to put in the checkbook. 20%, rounded up to the nearest dollar.

For that amount, I find it way easier to round up the bill first before doing the 20%, i.e., I'd think $24, easily add $2.40 and $2.40 to get $4.80, which I then round to $5.00. I'm impressed you can talk and add odd amounts like that! :rotfl:

And I just leave a flat amount, since meals out are always charged I don't care if it's an odd amount.

I tip a percentage and just round up to the next dollar when I pay. It's easier than waiting for change.

Wow, someone needs to cut back on their stress load.

Ever had a random thought...personally I thought it was funny, which is why I took the time to answer.
