Dana0069, You are so witty. The things you are saying, boy are they funny! I am just laughing hysterically, you are so darn smart that you don't have to listen to anything anyone else has to say. I just find it hilarious that you are going to steal people's tips, how smart is that? I bet no one has ever thought of that before. You should really be in the customer service industry, it sounds like you would be great with the customers! Heck I would tip you if you waited on me. But if I saw you in the parking lot later, you better say your hail (not halo!! boy you are so smart!) mary's! Have a great day and big big hugs to you!!!

Andrea

o.k one more time, what I am saying is:
If and when i go to disney with my family of 5, I am going on a BUDGET..!!!
And if i am budgeting a $100.00 a day (spending/food costs)
and based on what i am reading here..tipping is not going to happen!
lets see if i can summarize this for you..
tip the chambermaid everymorning, tipping the taxi driver everyday, tipping someone to carry my luggage, tipping everytime i eat etc.etc.etc. and based on tipping practices that i'm reading anywhere from 15% - 30% i'll be spending anywhere from $50.00-$100.00 a day in tips alone on top of the $100.00 that i budgeted..NOT..!! i don't think so..it just ain't gonna happen.
When it comes down to me feeding my family VS your 30% tip...my family eats and your going hungry, sorry I look after me first..you second.. if at all.
And to Andrea, the las vegas showgirl/english teacher...i hope my grammar was to your liking.
Hugs right back at ya....now this little meeting that your purposing in the parking lot, should i be getting a little excited over this? You are turing me on..(wink..wink..)
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo and a big hug for you..!! dana0069

Ouch. This thread has taken an ugly turn.

Thank you to all who are in (or were in) the service industry who shared with us their views of tipping. I think I am ok in every department but the bagggage handler. ;)

I think that getting back to the original posters issues and "question" it seems that when you go to Disney and are not as concerned about your budget, you do run into more tipped dependant workers than you do in your normal life. We went on a real budget to Disney several years ago and were able to avoid some of the expense and tipping requirements by staying in an off-site resort, carrying our own bags (into the airport and into the hotel), eating fast food and counter service, buying food at a grocery store and keeping it in coolers, driving or renting an inexpensive car, bringing snacks and sandwiches into the park, and eating off-site, and shortening our trip . We had a wonderful time and were proud of our savings. I guess we could have lived a little higher and not tipped, but, personally, that's just would not have felt "right" for our family. We are returning this year and have the money this time to live it up a little bit. I came to this thread, because I truely was clueless regarding what is considered customary for tipping and wanting to be fair to those that were waiting on me. This is particularly important to me and my family after watching all the hurricane related problems that have plagued Disney this year and with our awareness that many of the cast members that will be in the parks have expereinced financial challenges as a result. I want to understand what is fair, that's all.

You don't get taxed on tips here.

And yes I'm complaining about people being tipped for doing their job. Its ridiculous. Why should someone be tipping just because they carried my bags? They were hired for that and its not a hard job. Why should someone be tipped for driving me where I want to go? They were hired for that. It's their job.

Why should someone get extra money for doing what they were hired to do?

I'm angry about paying a tip completely. I don't see the point other than, whoopdidoo, someone got some extra money in their pocket for doing the job they were hired to do (namely, nothing special).

Why should I pay extra money because you decided that your supposed to be pleasant, keep my cup filled, and make sure I enjoy my dinner? You were HIRED for that. Its nothing special.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?"
"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired.
Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she said brusquely.
The little boy again counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table, and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed. When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies--her tip.

Dana -good to see you didn't over exaggerate the amount of tipping per day:confused: Why will you be taking a cab and using bell hops every day? Also unless you are doing a sit down meal every time there is no need for a tip there.

I am a server and I am very glad that only about 1% of the population thinks the way you do. Some people are extremely cheap but they are the ones that have to live with themselves.

Servers get paid low wages, and they rely on their tips. To not tip at all is unacceptable, cheap and rude UNLESS your service was horrible. If people are going to use these services, they should adhere to the honor system of tipping.

I did not leave any tips for housekeeping on my last WDW visit (at Pop Century).

They left that little card in the room from housekeeping that says "have a nice stay" or something like that, and has a picture of Mickey Mouse with his arms outstretched.

Somebody had drawn a little dollar sign in Mickey's outstretched hand.

I did not leave any tips for housekeeping on that visit since I know that housekeeping is not customarily a tipped position at WDW and I thought someone had a lot of nerve asking for tips.

I might have done it if they hadn't used this method of ASKING for a tip (I think asking for one is tacky even for those in tipped positions), or if housekeeping WAS a customarily tipped position.

tdc Nala: same thing happened to me at a not wdw resort ( a little envelope telling me how much to tip housekeeping) i didnt tip those greedy little people either but they got me back when the last day they stole all my clean sweat pants from the drawers! ( they left everything else and i didn't even notice till i got home)

Wow, reading this, it makes me want to go to WDW even less.
I guess my September '05 trip will e my last time.

Are you surprised by this behavior???
The mentality of these so called 'sevice industry' people is ;
Tip me, and tip me good or ELSE..by reading their posts I wouldn't expect anything less than that.
I for one will not be threatened nor bullied into tipping.
This is devious, and criminal behavour. I would have called and reported this if it happened to me.
Stealing...spitting on food....and destroying personal property, because we didn't tip...or because the tip wasn't enough in their mind.....ya right ..need I say more.
How did these people get their jobs to begin with...???

Yup! Like many of us have expressed before.

If you don't like your job, quit. If you can't quit your job, then do your job to the best of your ability. If stealing is part of "best ability", then you should not even have the job to begin with.

It's TIP and it's NOT Service Charge. There is no rule to this 'game', just 'the norm'. Moreso, "the norm" can be different from one customer to another.

If this doesn't show that tipping is not severely out of contorl, I don't know what is.

Oh well, I'll just need to get through this trip and one last trip in September '05

From what I understand, spitting in food is retailatory behavior done by a FEW waitpeople. i.e. it is done to regulars who don't tip. Since I doubt Dana will go to the same WDW restaurant twice, I don't think you need to worry - even if you don't tip. And get caught doing it and you get fired.

Dana, not everyone posting pro tipping is a service industry professional. I've never held a job where I've worked for tips. I don't think the majority of people in this thread are in the service industry.

Also, since housekeeping tipping is often done the last day, the maid that jann had was just stealing the sweatpants independant of no tip - she couldn't have known jann wasn't leaving a tip. She was just greedy - and willing to cross the line into stealing as well as poor manners. Also, that wasn't a WDW resort - although I'm sure WDW isn't immune to dishonest employees.

tdcNala - I'd have taken that little card to the resort manager.

Unfortunately, I am not surprised by this behavior. In every walk of life, we run into people that are trying to cheat others and don't understand or demonstrate appropriate behavior. It's not just the service industry - it just "shows" more there. I have always felt that educating other people will work better to change furture behavior than "revenge" behaviors. Having said this I can honestly say in all the years that I worked as a waitress I never witnessed anyone harming anyone's food in any way. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I think it's pretty rare (I worked in the industry for about 6 years). When it does happen in the food industry, it has nothing to do with tipping - remember you don't give your tip until after you complete the meal and I learned that the behavior of the customer throughout the meal often does not coorelate with the tip that they leave.

Okay, I'm one of the people who strongly believes in tipping, but I would NOT have tipped housekeeping after that TACKY card they left with money in Mickey's hands. Asking for it just ruins it.

I thought about it, but they were a little busy dealing with Hurricane Frances at the time. No tip was good enough.

Because of Frances there wasn't any housekeeping for a couple of days, anyway.

I was a chamermaid was i was 13 and i think the deserve a tip. BUT not if they ask for one. ONLY if they deserve one. It is a crappy job.
