Tipping mousekeeping

Housekeeping is already classified as a tipped position in some of the hotel industry. Marriott International had a big public relations campaign last year trying to raise awareness for the need to tip housekeepers. They even leave envelopes in their rooms.

I mean having the same classification legally as a bartender or server. And what the Marriott did is exactly why there has been a push-back because of the potential implications.

We usually put a DND sign for the lenght of our stay And DH always cleans the room before we check out. We still tip at the end.

This is usually what we do as well. If it is a longer trip we may ask for a room cleaning once during the middle of the trip and tip on that day as well.

I always leave the DND sign on the door. If I am staying longer than a week then I will have them clean the room. But since they make over $10 an hour to clean the room, I did not tip my last trip.

I tip $1/person/day at Disney.

I'm also not a fan of tipping in general unless someone goes above and beyond....however, I follow the cultural norm and tip accordingly. I just wish people were paid properly and tipping wasn't required. I don't make tips in my profession...nor should I. And believe me, I work in health care and definitely go above and beyond for people. My point is, pay people what they're job is worth and tipping wouldnt be needed.

Im in Canada, and quite often there's a tip function when purchasing something from a counter service place. Why would I tip the person who put a muffin into a bag and passed it to me? I hate that the function is on the keypad when I pay for something like that....or the tip jar on the counter at a convenience store?

Five dollars for each night we stay, a little more if we make a mess, and in the past we have asked the house keeper for something more ..then a bigger tip. I have never had a bad housekeeper at Disney.

What is wrong with just bringing a little joy to someone who is making my vacation special.....making my bed, cleaning my bathroom....etc. I tip because it is a nice thing to do. I leave $5 a day on a note card saying "Thank you!"
I'm with ya, Sistah! As a previous poster said, they're cleaning my TOILETS for crying out loud!
One time, we tipped quite a bit and had asked for towel animals for our grandchildren. We not only got really cute towel animals, but a lovely note thanking us from our mousekeeper!!!
For me it's about being gracious and kind, I can afford to leave $5 a night for someone else to clean my mess, and as long as it's in my budget (and I PLAN for that in my budget), i will continue to tip. Occasionally I will ask for extra decaf coffee, but by and large our needs are simple.
I work hard for my money, but I appreciate what someone else does to make my stay magical. So I'm more than willing to share.

I agree, but respect that other may not agree. I have my envelopes ready befoe we even leave the house, and if I ask for turn down ( I LOVE TURNDOWN SERVICE!!!!!) I have that already paid for as well. At home I am the chief cook, bottle washer, and toilet cleaner. I don't mind, it is what I signed on for. (DH said he signed on to feed me! LOL) So when I am vacationing, there is no cooking, cleaning, or dish washing. WE are not slobs, and I never ever leave a mess of the mousekeeper, but I appreciate all that she or he does that I normally do at home and give a top to show that.

This.
Maybe one cleaning by housekeeping for longer stays, but I prefer to just ask for extra standard items IF needed rather than have daily service. If this requires "extra" work, I do tip, but if it involves only handing an item from the cart, I usually don't. We are fairly tidy, so the room is typically not dirty. Frankly, just don't want anyone in the room. Maybe they appreciate the extra time available for skipping our room. I leave a note stating that we don't need service, therefore they don't have to waste time checking back to see if the Do Not Disturb sign is down.

I always give a tip of $3-5 a day of the trip. To my understanding, Mousekeeping gets $8-10 an hour. In my mind, that means I should tip them. I've never seen an American hotel where Housekeeping isn't a tipped position.

Everyone always thinks of the toilets but I have a friend that works in housekeeping and the hardest part is the beds lifting matresses all day long is a killer. Btw disney pays 10.5/hr between taxes and health insurance my firend gets around 280/week so she really apreciate the tips but she says most people don't and that british people never tip.

This is very good information, because we are a family of five, we traditionally stay in a condo or rent a house when we travel, which means we don't have house keeping. But since we are staying in a Disney hotel for this trip, I wouldn't have thought to tip, because we so rarely stay at a hotel.

Housekeeping at Disney is a non-tipped position

Wow. I'm a bartender and understand the importance of tips but never heard of tipping housekeeping. We are staying 3 nights next month. Instead of tipping cash, I may just give our housekeepers nice gifts just to mix it up.

She also said that young unmarried women should never dine at a bachelors house....
My source was the Emily Post Institute (www.emilypost.com), not Emily herself who died decades ago. It is also the current advice from this website and not advice from almost 100 years ago, as I believe your information is. My intention was to offer a source that tipping housekeeping is not a "regional" thing, as a previous poster wrote.

Nicely said!

Unfortunately, they have nowhere to hold onto said gifts while working. Even a dollar or two would be more appreciated.

I am from Canada and I always tip housekeeping. I thought it was normal. :confused3 I usually leave 3-5 on the pillow so they know it's for them. In the past I have left it on the nightstand and they didn't take it. I'm assuming they didn't want to be accused of stealing if it wasn't meant for them.

The only thing they can bring home is food. They check their bags every day. Everything else has to turned on in to lost and found even if a guest gave it to you.
