Tipping Mousekeeping

While I don't really want to get in to a debate about whether or not leaving a gratuity for the Mousekeepers is something that should or should not be done, I would like to ask those of you who do leave a gratuity two questions:


Do you think that the gratuity that you leave has an effect on the level of service that you are receiving?

and

If you didn't leave the gratuity, what service level would you expect?

We where only there 4 nights but we did leave tips each morning. I started with a $2, then $3, then two days at $4. I don't know if that is to much or to little. We figured if each MK is responsible for even 20 rooms at $2 tip in each one is $40 extra dollars, that is pretty good if you did that each day.
To answer your question no, I don't think the service would have been less if we didn't tip, but we really did appriciate coming back to our room after a long day and having the beds all made nice, and new towels etc. To me that was worth a few dollars here and there.

We are DVC members and stay on points so we only get mousekeeping services every 4 days (alternate full cleaning and trash/towel service). For Trash/towel service, I usually leave $4-5 and full cleaning $6-7 for 1 bedrooms and if it's a studio, just a few dollars less each.

I am not sure if the service is different, but I do feel that a little tip shows them that we appreciate their work and in that case they may do a little better cleaning or do a little extra.


However, if I find that they are not doing a good job, I would not tip at all or at least lessen the tip.

We left 4$ per day ( 1$ per day per person )(in pre made envlopes )for our 10 night stay at pop and got 3 towel animals and lots of extra soaps and shampoos

We were in Disney last year and left a $1 per person per day in envelopes we had decorated, we went with another family who did not leave tips for MK. While both of our rooms were cleaned very well, we received extras like animals made from towels and stuffed animals that we brought arranged as if having a party. Those were the little extras we received that the other family did not as a show of appreciation.

I don't really know if it has affected the level of service that we have received. The room was always clean and we had plenty of everything that we needed. I agree with a pp, we appreciate the hard work that they do for us and we try to reflect that in the amount of tip we leave. We also like to leave a little note for them in the room when we leave just to say an extra "thankyou" for the work they did and that it helped to contribute to the enjoyment of our stay/trip.

$1 per person per day. Our room was always clean and had extra towels and soaps when we requested them. We did have towel animals once too. Nice touch, but not necessary.
I'd like to think that whether we tipped or not, our room would be clean.

I was a maid, at a local hotel, for a summer when I was in high school. (Yuck... ) The tips, are very appreciated and let me tell you.....it absolutely, has an impact on the level of service you will get. Although mousekeeping is always great....never, ever had a complaint. But I know that I would go out of my way for anyone, that thought enough to tip. I think $5.00 a day is what we usually do.

We just came back from 10 day stay at VWL as DVC member. I got a full clean on the 4th day. I called housekeeping on the 6th day to see if they could change the sheet on my bed because DS got it dirty and they did another FULL cleaning. Didn't understand why. Thought I would be charged for it but didn't. Got my usual towel and trash on the 8th day. I put $30 with some chocolates and bath products on the dining table for them. Throughout the trip I was tipping just about anybody, bell service, driver for the DME, etc. Apparently business for Disney has been down this year and these little guys are the ones who suffer from this. It just makes their days.

We do tip MK every day, so to answer Jim's questions:

I'm not convinced that it has any effect on the level of service. We always tip, and our room is not always cleaned thoroughly ...ie. crumbs from breakfast under the table still there even though they supposedly vacuumed ... this has happened too many times for my liking. We have never received towel animals on a regular basis ... in all of our trips staying onsite, we've only had them a couple of times. I will say that if I have a request for extra towels in the room, I put the note WITH the tip and it's almost always done.

If I decided not to leave a tip, I would still expect a thoroughly cleaned room. However, I might expect them to "not see" my little note that requests extra pool towels.

Any MK we run into that have cleaned our room and received our tip have always said Thank you, so we know it's appreciated.

I like the discussion and I truly believe that a little tip here are there helps. I am assuming their hourly rate is very low.

Alot of people have mentioned the $1 per day /per /person. How do you know or find out how many MK are actually cleaning your room?

I like this idea and I want to make sure I leave the right amount.

I base the $1 per person as being how many people are staying in the room, assuming that more people make bigger messes, extra towels, etc. So there are 4 of us, so we usually tip $4-$5 per day.

And the room somehow magically still gets clean.

Probabyl cause they know that I'll be wracked with guilt and leave double the next day.. heee hee..

Here I thought it was based on the amount of MK cleaning your room. Yours make alot more sense as I have a 1 yr and he drops more food then he eats so $5 a day is good. There is 4 of us but my 1yr counts as 2 because of the mess!!!

I guess that's why I take my family to WDW.... to feel like a kid again
