Tipping: How much at a DVC 2 Bedroom

I never know how much to tip at a DVC location.

What do you recommend to tip for a 2 bedroom, 1 bedroom or studio.

I know they only do housekeeping again after about half the week, so I am not sure how to rate that for tipping?

I appreciate any advice.

Many people here tip (and I'm sure they'll be along to let you know how much) but Disney considers housekeeping to be non-tipped positions.

I don't tip them because they do basically nothing. I empty the garabage so all they do is take the towels and replace them. Sorry, no tip, in fact I wish they did not come into my unit at all. I wash the towels myself also.

I wash the towels myself too.

I think I do more laundry than anyone else at Disney.

I do a white load of towels every night.
And then collect a light load from everyone, and a dark load.
Dryer packets and more detergent brought with me on the plane.
I am always thinking someone is thinking I am bringing some drug on the plane, a white powder in plastic baggies, but if security sniffs them there gonna get a load of detergent up their nose.

Once my niece put her orange dress in with the white towels, and the towels all turned yellow/orangish.
Bleach did not get the yellow out.
Housekeeping was great about it, and just used them as scraps.
I was scared I was gonna own and buy a set of 8 yellow orange towels. Thank You Housekeeping.

So far I have been leaving a 10 or a 20 dollar bill when I leave a 2 bedroom condo.

But when my niece and her partner recently came, they insisted on leaving 50 dollars. I wanted to go back and get it and switch it back to 20 dollars. But I didn't, that would have been against the relative's wishes.

What do other people in this forum leave for a tip?
I am curious, no judgements being made.

I usually stay through only one housekeeping, 5 or 6 nights.

I never leave dishes in the sink on housekeeping or departure day. I always take the garbage out daily myself, and sometimes twice a day when we do take out at the condo.

I may consider the luxury of doing daily towel service in the future, the price isn't that bad, and I am so tired when I do them and they finally come out of the dryer at 1 AM.
Yes, I am the one who kept you awake with the dryer noise the last time I went to Old Key West - Sorry.
(The snoring I make is even worse though).

I am probably like some of you, grab extra dry pool towels if you can, and take them back to the room to surive one night's worth of dry towels for the six or eight of us.

I appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Phil

We never tip for housekeeping as they rarely have anything to clean we always make the bed and do the dishes and take out the trash. They come in and drop off towels once during the week so we see no point in tipping for that. We also do the vacuming (sp) brain fart on the spelling of that word for some reason. So we have the room clean for them.

I'm with PA@okw95. We went to HHI twice this year. The first time a left a small tip but the second trip I did not leave a tip for the same reasons PA@okw95 mentioned. I took out the trash and kept the place neat. The only thing housekeeping did was to bring towels of which we had plenty since we wash ours.

The same people who "do nothing" for us during our stays are the housekeepers who do (or don't) shine up our villas before our arrival. To me, it's worth $20 bucks to thank and motivate them, whether this is a tipped position or not. I just can't see refusing to tip because they only come into the room occasionally, and yet going over the room with a magnifying glass and complaining about every speck when we first come in the door.

The villas have had some housecleaning problems. Loosening up a little on tipping is one way to help address those problems. Given how little mousekeeping positions get paid in the first place, I don't begrudge the money at all. If my accomodations are shiny when my family moves in, I'll tip when we move out.

In a 2 bedroom, I tip $20 for a full clean(or when we check out if less than a week)and $5 for trash and tidy. I find that we get all kinds of extra soaps and supplies and sometimes extra towels when we tip well. Hey, I figure this is just part of my vacation cost and plan on it.

$ 5 for T and T day in a studio or 1BR *
$10 for full cleaning of the same

$10 for T and T on 2BR and $20 for full cleaning of the same

We do not leave amess and we only need towels to be replaced and the trash which is all tied up to go out. I usually strip my own beds before we leave to "help out".

*except when I clean the pooh off the walls!

We left $20 for the 2BR when we checked out. We were going to leave something on towel and trash day, but forgot. You know you're having a good vacation when you lose track of the date. Housekeeping did leave us extra towels on T and T day.

One thing I just remembered about the towels. The housekeepers told us to just take some extras from the carts if we needed them.

This is a good question. We weren't sure how much to leave either.

Does anyone get the feeling that this will be another thread that gets added to the top of the page?

I always tip $5.00 on T/T day and more on full cleaning when it's in the middle of my trip. Just a small token of appreciation from my family.

I think even a couple bucks says thank you. It's just a little token of appreciation. Now the bell service guy who takes 3 steps to put my bags in a room and the guy who takes 3 steps to retrive it for all of 10 seconds while the maid spends 2 hours polishing our rooms.................don't get me started.

If they do something special or above and beyond, I tip accordingly. I will not tip for someone in a non tipped position who are simply doing their job. It is unreasonable to expect otherwise. Everyone else can do what they want. The one fear I do have is that if enough people tip over time Disney will convert these positions to tipped ones and simply reduce their salary as many hotels have done. This would actually hurt the CM in the long run, especially the ones that came into the system new around or after such a shift.

So a mousekeeper works at the hotel wing of the Beach Club. She cleans a few standard hotel rooms there and she gets tipped, say, 40% of the time by guests who haven't read somewhere that, unlike most hotels, Disney considers housekeeping to be a non-tipped position. Now she rolls her cart into the villa wing, where she cleans larger rooms where food preparation has taken place and which have gone longer between cleanings and there she gets tipped, say, 10% of the time. Who's she going to try harder for?

I see your point and it's another way of making mine, that it creates an inappropriate expectation. Still, there's no indication that I'm aware of that the staff get tipped more from the non DVC than DVC. Actually my impression is that it's likely to be the reverse.

I think my wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting to do this. And gather all of the towels and wash rags into one big pile. I'd probably wash them if I didn't think they'd just wash them again anyway. She doesn't think it odd I clean our own kitchen mess or put out the trash, or run the vac when the floor is visibly dirty. If everyone did more, maybe there'd be less wait for mousekeeping to get rooms ready. Or Ei$ner would just cut staff since you obviously don't need as many if they're getting to rooms cleaned quicker, but I'm optimistic.

I guess this attitude it comes from years of family vacations in family shore homes. You make a mess, you clean it, and it's wrong (IMNSHO) to leave a messy room. *GASP* I just realized I became my Aunt Mildred. She cleaned the house before the cleaning lady--the one that my Uncle Nick hired to clean so my Aunt didn't have to--showed up to clean the house.

As for tipping, we'll usually leave $10-20 depending on what I have in my pocketses. I usually miss T&T day because my brain doesn't comprehend the entire inclusive counting method they use for days, but will leave money at the end. It's only a few bucks and compared to what we all put in to Michael'$ pocketeses, it's small potatoes.

We also 'tidy up' before we leave. Load the dishwasher (not run it because I am pretty sure they will just do it again), strip the beds, pile the towels, that sort of thing. I agree that if I can help just a little, I will. Plus I imagine that the housekeepers do appreciate it. We also leave a tip (around $10 for 1 bedroom for 2 adults). Also because I think that they appreciate that.

Dean, are you saying that DVCers tip more than regular hotel guests? That would surprise me, although I have to respect your experience in these matters. Could you please elaborate on this?

Dean, How very republican of you (just kidding);)

I have never tipped before at DVC....but after reading this discussion i believe i will leave some money at check out if, as stated prior, my room is clean when i move in. I think we should appreciate those that do such a good job preparing our room for us....I have always struggled with the fact that many people who clean our rooms, may never be able to afford to stay in them with there families....ooops....sorry thats the loony left wing liberal in me coming out.....down boy!!!!!:D :D

That is my impression but I have no facts to back it up. I'd be interested in real data.

Thank you, great complement.
