Tipping Gone Wild

It seems to DH and I that tipping solicitation has gotten way out of hand.

Two examples-

1. There is now a tip jar at the drive through window at Starbucks.

2. DH stopped at Taco Bell in the airport to buy a soda and they had tip jars at each register.

What's next- Will the Wal Mart cashier solicit tips? After all she gives me more service than Starbucks drive through or Taco Bell counter.

BTW we always tip at all the usual places: Restaurants, pedicurist, hair dresser, housekeeping, bell services, valets. etc...

I don't get the whole coffee tipping thing. I order a beverage, they fix the beverage, they hand me the beverage, I pay for the beverage. How is that any different than getting a sandwich? They have tip jars out at the ice cream places now too.

There are 2 tip jars at the take & bake pizza place. They have "cute" signs on them. One says, Can you feel the love?, if so, spread the wealth. The other says Tips make pizza taste better. I wonder if they spit in it if you don't tip?

One of the worst was when I bought a cup of coffee at the coffee cart at the hospital, all they did was hand me a cup and point me to the end to serve myself. They had a tip jar there for giving you a paper cup.

I refuse to tip at these type of places.

Cold Stone Creamery had a tip jar out and yes I did tip only after learning that when you tip - they all sing a song. The song they sang when I tipped them was Zip a Do Da.

It was worth the tip. Usually I don't tip at places with tip jars.

Now they are smart- doing something "extra" to earn a tip! I would probably tip them, also.

One of the times when I actually went in Dunkin' Donuts instead of the drive-thru, I had one girl who, when handing me my change, put her hand over the tip jar and looked at me - I then put my hand out for my change and she gave me a look! Yes, waaaaaay too out of hand!

I have gotten so accustomed to seeing tip jars everywhere that when we were at the pool the other day and a lifeguard was especially helpful with my 3-year-old (helping him put on a lifejacket, etc.) I felt like I should tip her!
If the kids at the smoothie shop can have a tip jar, why can't the lifeguards?

In New Jersey, they actually have a place on their Traffic Citations for tips. If you feel the officer was ecxtraordinarily professional, you can add a tip to the citation.

I think tipping is way out of hand. People expect you to make up for their small wage. Tipping is not for making up for lost wages. Its for a job well done as a encouragement to do it again.
